ABSTRACT: Unusual buckypapers, sheets of graphene nanocarbons (GNCs) such as carbon nanotubes, were formed with GNCs directly derived from CO₂ via molten carbonate electrolysis. Examples are presented for buckypapers made from CO₂ using either crushed or chemically washed GNCs, epoxy-infused CNTs, or GNCs pressed directly using a hot electrolyte to remove excess electrolyte.

Submillimeter-Long WS2 Nanotubes: The Pathway to Inorganic Buckypaper.

Project description:WS2 nanotubes present many new technologies under development, including reinforced biocompatible polymers, membranes, photovoltaic-based memories, ferroelectric devices, etc. These technologies depend on the aspect ratio (length/diameter) of the nanotubes, which was limited to 100 or so. A new synthetic technique is presented, resulting in WS2 nanotubes a few hundred micrometers long and diameters below 50 nm (aspect ratios of 2000-5000) in high yields. Preliminary investigation into the mechanistic aspects of the two-step synthesis reveals that W5O14 nanowhisker intermediates are formed in the first step of the reaction instead of the ubiquitous W18O49 nanowhiskers used in the previous syntheses. The electrical and photoluminescence properties of the long nanotubes were studied. WS2 nanotube-based paper-like material was prepared via a wet-laying process, which could not be realized with the 10 μm long WS2 nanotubes. Ultrafiltration of gold nanoparticles using the nanotube-paper membrane was demonstrated.

Project description:This SEM, TEM and Raman Spectra and economic calculations data provides a benchmark for carbon nanotubes synthesized via molten electrolyte via the carbon dioxide to carbon nanotube (C2CNT) process useful for comparison to other data on longer length C2CNT wools; specifically: (I) C2CNT electrosynthesis with bare (uncoated) cathodes and without pre-electrolysis low current activation. (II) C2CNT Intermediate length CNTs with intermediate integrated electrolysis charge transfer. (III) C2CNT Admixing of sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorous (in addition to boron) to carbon nanotubes, and (IV) Scalability of the C2CNT process. This data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "Carbon Nanotube Wools Made Directly from CO2 by Molten Electrolysis: Value Driven Pathways to Carbon Dioxide Greenhouse Gas Mitigation" (Johnson et al., 2017) [1].

Co@Carbon and Co 3 O4@Carbon nanocomposites derived from a single MOF for supercapacitors.

Project description:Developing a composite electrode containing both carbon and transition metal/metal oxide as the supercapacitor electrode can combine the merits and mitigate the shortcomings of both the components. Herein, we report a simple strategy to prepare the hybrid nanostructure of Co@Carbon and Co3O4@Carbon by pyrolysis a single MOFs precursor. Co-based MOFs (Co-BDC) nanosheets with morphology of regular parallelogram slice have been prepared by a bottom-up synthesis strategy. One-step pyrolysis of Co-BDC, produces a porous carbon layer incorporating well-dispersed Co and Co3O4 nanoparticles. The as-prepared cobalt-carbon composites exhibit the thin layer morphology and large specific surface area with hierarchical porosity. These features significantly improve the ion-accessible surface area for charge storage and shorten the ion transport length in thin dimension, thus contributing to a high specific capacitance. Improved capacitance performance was successfully realized for the asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) (Co@Carbon//Co3O4@Carbon), better than those of the symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs) based on Co@Carbon and Co3O4@Carbon materials (i.e., Co@Carbon//Co@Carbon and Co3O4@Carbon//Co3O4@Carbon). The working voltage of the ASCs can be extended to 1.5 V and show a remarkable high power capability in aqueous electrolyte. This work provides a controllable strategy for nanostructured carbon-metal and carbon-metal oxide composite electrodes from a single precursor.

Single Walled BiI3 Nanotubes Encapsulated within Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Inorganic nanotubes are morphological counterparts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Yet, only graphene-like BN layer has been readily organized into single walled nanotubes so far. In this study, we present a simple route to obtain inorganic single walled nanotubes - a novel ultrathin morphology for bismuth iodide (BiI3), embedded within CNTs. The synthesis involves the capillary filling of BiI3 into CNT, which acts as a nanotemplate, by annealing the BiI3-CNT mixture above the melting point of BiI3. Aberration corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy is used in characterizing the novel morphology of BiI3. A critical diameter which enables the formation of BiI3 nanotubes, against BiI3 nanorods is identified. The relative stability of these phases is investigated with the density functional theory calculations. Remarkably, the calculations reveal that the single walled BiI3 nanotubes are semiconductors with a direct band gap, which remain stable even without the host CNTs.

Freon-CO2-assisted purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:With the rapidly growing applications, efficient purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has become one of the key problems. This paper proposes Freon-CO2-assisted purification of SWCNTs, where CO2 can oxidize the graphitized carbon layer to expose iron (Fe) impurities, while the chlorine from Freon can react with the Fe impurities to form low-boiling-point metal chlorides that can be eliminated in a gas stream. After an acid washing with a very small amount of hydrochloric acid, the last remaining metal impurities are removed and highly pure SWCNTs are produced. Compared with traditional strong-acid-oxidation purification or high-temperature-vacuum purification, this method can maintain the structure and length of the SWCNTs. Raman spectra show that an I G/I D ratio of more than 100 can be obtained. This purification method can maintain the microstructure and excellent properties of SWCNTs and provide a solution for the preparation of high-quality SWCNTs to exert their properties.

A novel CO2 utilization technology for the synergistic co-production of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and syngas.

Project description:Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a well-known process in which CH4 and CO2 catalytically react to produce syngas. Solid carbon is a well-known byproduct of the DRM but is undesirable as it leads to catalyst deactivation. However, converting CO2 and CH4 into solid carbon serves as a promising carbon capture and sequestration technique that has been demonstrated in this study by two patented processes. In the first process, known as CARGEN technology (CARbon GENerator), a novel concept of two reactors in series is developed that separately convert the greenhouse gases (GHGs) into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and syngas. CARGEN enables at least a 50% reduction in energy requirement with at least 65% CO2 conversion compared to the DRM process. The second process presents an alternative pathway for the regeneration/reactivation of the spent DRM/CARGEN catalyst using CO2. Provided herein is the first report on an experimental demonstration of a 'switching' technology in which CO2 is utilized in both the operation and the regeneration cycles and thus, finally contributing to the overall goal of CO2 fixation. The following studies support all the results in this work: physisorption, chemisorption, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, TGA, ICP, and Raman analysis.

Co-Zn-MOFs Derived N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes with Crystalline Co Nanoparticles Embedded as Effective Oxygen Electrocatalysts.

Project description:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a crucial step in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. It is necessary to expand the range of efficient non-precious ORR electrocatalysts on account of the low abundance and high cost of Pt/C catalysts. Herein, we synthesized crystalline cobalt-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@CNTs-T) via facile carbonization of Co/Zn metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with dicyandiamide at different temperatures (t = 600, 700, 800, 900 °C). Co@CNTs- 800 possessed excellent ORR activities in alkaline electrolytes with a half wave potential of 0.846 V vs. RHE (Reversible Hydrogen Electrode), which was comparable to Pt/C. This three-dimensional network, formed by Co@CNTs-T, facilitated electron migration and ion diffusion during the ORR process. The carbon shell surrounding the Co nanoparticles resulted in Co@CNTs-800 being stable as an electrocatalyst. This work provides a new strategy to design efficient and low-cost oxygen catalysts.

One-step synthesis of visible light CO2 reduction photocatalyst from carbon nanotubes encapsulating iodine molecules.

Project description:We describe the synthesis and visible-light CO2 photoreduction catalytic properties of a three-component composite consisting of AgI, AgIO3, and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The catalyst is synthesized by immersing SWCNTs encapsulating iodine molecules in AgNO3 aqueous solution, during which neutral iodine (I2) molecules encapsulated in SWCNTs transform disproportionately to I5+ (AgIO3) and I- (AgI), as revealed from the characterization of the composite by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, photoirradiation experiments using a solar-simulator (AM1.5G) showed that the obtained three-component composite works as a CO2 photoreduction catalyst under visible light despite the wide band gap of AgIO3, suggesting possible transfer of the visible light-excited electron from AgI via SWCNTs.

Engineering Fe-N4 Electronic Structure with Adjacent Co-N2C2 and Co Nanoclusters on Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis.

Project description:Regulating the local configuration of atomically dispersed transition-metal atom catalysts is the key to oxygen electrocatalysis performance enhancement. Unlike the previously reported single-atom or dual-atom configurations, we designed a new type of binary-atom catalyst, through engineering Fe-N4 electronic structure with adjacent Co-N2C2 and nitrogen-coordinated Co nanoclusters, as oxygen electrocatalysts. The resultant optimized electronic structure of the Fe-N4 active center favors the binding capability of intermediates and enhances oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in both alkaline and acid conditions. In addition, anchoring M-N-C atomic sites on highly graphitized carbon supports guarantees of efficient charge- and mass-transports, and escorts the high bifunctional catalytic activity of the entire catalyst. Further, through the combination of electrochemical studies and in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses, the ORR degradation mechanisms under highly oxidative conditions during oxygen evolution reaction processes were revealed. This work developed a new binary-atom catalyst and systematically investigates the effect of highly oxidative environments on ORR electrochemical behavior. It demonstrates the strategy for facilitating oxygen electrocatalytic activity and stability of the atomically dispersed M-N-C catalysts.

Hierarchical structure N, O-co-doped porous carbon/carbon nanotube composite derived from coal for supercapacitors and CO2 capture.

Project description:The energy and environmental crises have forced us to search for a new green energy source and develop energy storage and environmental restoration technologies. Fabrication of carbon functional materials derived from coal has attracted increasing attention in the energy storage and gas adsorption fields. In this study, an N, O-co-doped porous carbon/carbon nanotube composite was prepared by functionalizing coal-based porous carbon with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and ionic liquid via annealing. The resulting material not only inherited the morphology of CNTs and porous carbon, but also developed a three dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure with numerous heteroatom groups. The N, O co-doped porous carbon/CNT composite (N, O-PC-CNTs) showed a surface area of 2164 m2 g-1, and a high level of N/O dopants (8.0 and 3.0 at%, respectively). Benefiting from such merits, N, O-PC-CNTs exhibited a rather high specific capacitance of 287 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 and a high rate capability (70% and 64% capacitance retention at 10 and 50 A g-1, respectively) in a three electrode system. Furthermore, an N, O-PC-CNT symmetrical supercapacitor showed a high cycling stability with 95% capacitance retention after 20 000 cycles at 20 A g-1 and an energy density of 4.5 W h kg-1 at a power density of 12.5 kW kg-1 in 6 mol L-1 KOH electrolyte. As a CO2 adsorbent, N, O-PC-CNTs exhibited a high CO2 uptake of 5.7 and 3.7 mmol g-1 at 1 bar at 273 and 298 K, respectively. Moreover, N, O-PC-CNTs showed cycling stability with 94% retention of the initial CO2 adsorption capacity at 298 K over 10 cycles. This report introduces a strategy to design a coal based porous carbon composite for use in efficient supercapacitor electrodes and CO2 adsorbents.
