One-, two- and three-dimensional interlocked polymers based on hybrid inorganic-organic rotaxanes.

ABSTRACT: We report three new polymers, based on mechanically interlocked inorganic-organic rotaxanes. They are made in very mild conditions and involve pyrimidine head groups binding to copper(ii) linking units. A two-dimensional 6,3 net and a three-dimensional 10,3b net are found depending on the solvent used in the reaction.

Three-dimensional electron ptychography of organic-inorganic hybrid nanostructures.

Project description:Three dimensional scaffolded DNA origami with inorganic nanoparticles has been used to create tailored multidimensional nanostructures. However, the image contrast of DNA is poorer than those of the heavy nanoparticles in conventional transmission electron microscopy at high defocus so that the biological and non-biological components in 3D scaffolds cannot be simultaneously resolved using tomography of samples in a native state. We demonstrate the use of electron ptychography to recover high contrast phase information from all components in a DNA origami scaffold without staining. We further quantitatively evaluate the enhancement of contrast in comparison with conventional transmission electron microscopy. In addition, We show that for ptychography post-reconstruction focusing simplifies the workflow and reduces electron dose and beam damage.

Excitonic cuprophilic interactions in one-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic crystals.

Project description:The everlasting pursuit of hybrid organic-inorganic lead-free semiconductors has directed the focus towards eco-friendly copper-based systems, perhaps because of the diversity in chemistry, controlling the structure-property relationship. In this work, we report single crystals of a Cu(i) halide-based perovskite-like organic-inorganic hybrid, (TMA)Cu2Br3, (TMA = tetramethylammonium), consisting of unusual one-dimensional inorganic anionic chains of -(Cu2Br3)-, electrostatically stabilized by organic cations, and the Cu(i)-Cu(i) distance of 2.775 Å indicates the possibility of cuprophilic interactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements further confirmed the presence of exclusive Cu(i) in (TMA)Cu2Br3 and electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory suggested a direct bandgap value of 2.50 eV. The crystal device demonstrated an impressive bulk photovoltaic effect due to the emergence of excitonic Cu(i)-Cu(i) interactions, as was clearly visualized in the charge-density plot as well as in the Raman spectroscopic analysis. The single crystals of a silver analogue, (TMA)Ag2Br3, have also been synthesized revealing a Ag(i)-Ag(i) distance of 3.048 Å (signature of an argentophilic interaction). Unlike (TMA)Cu2Br3, where more density of states from Cu compared to Br near the Fermi level was observed, (TMA)Ag2Br3 exhibited the opposite trend, possibly due to variation in the ionic potential influencing the overall bonding scenario.

Chiral multiferroicity in two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites.

Project description:Chiral multiferroics offer remarkable capabilities for controlling quantum devices at multiple levels. However, these materials are rare due to the competing requirements of long-range orders and strict symmetry constraints. In this study, we present experimental evidence that the coexistence of ferroelectric, magnetic orders, and crystallographic chirality is achievable in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites [(R/S)-β-methylphenethylamine]2CuCl4. By employing Landau symmetry mode analysis, we investigate the interplay between chirality and ferroic orders and propose a novel mechanism for chirality transfer in hybrid systems. This mechanism involves the coupling of non-chiral distortions, characterized by defining a pseudo-scalar quantity, ξ=p⋅r ( p represents the ferroelectric displacement vector and r denotes the ferro-rotational vector), which distinguishes between (R)- and (S)-chirality based on its sign. Moreover, the reversal of this descriptor's sign can be associated with coordinated transitions in ferroelectric distortions, Jahn-Teller antiferro-distortions, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors, indicating the mediating role of crystallographic chirality in magnetoelectric correlations.

Spatial Electron-hole Separation in a One Dimensional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Lead Iodide.

Project description:The increasing efficiency of the inorganic-organic hybrid halides has revolutionised photovoltaic research. Despite this rapid progress, the significant issues of poor stability and toxicity have yet to be suitably overcome. In this article, we use Density Functional Theory to examine (Pb2I6) · (H2DPNDI) · (H2O) · (NMP), an alternative lead-based hybrid inorganic-organic solar absorber based on a photoactive organic cation. Our results demonstrate that optical properties suitable for photovoltaic applications, in addition to spatial electron-hole separation, are possible but efficient charge transport may be a limiting factor.

Cross-plane coherent acoustic phonons in two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites.

Project description:Two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper organic-inorganic hybrid layered perovskites (2D RPs) are solution-grown semiconductors with prospective applications in next-generation optoelectronics. The heat-carrying, low-energy acoustic phonons, which are important for heat management of 2D RP-based devices, have remained unexplored. Here we report on the generation and propagation of coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons along the cross-plane direction of 2D RPs, following separate characterizations of below-bandgap refractive indices. Through experiments on single crystals of systematically varied perovskite layer thickness, we demonstrate significant reduction in both group velocity and propagation length of acoustic phonons in 2D RPs as compared to the three-dimensional methylammonium lead iodide counterpart. As borne out by a minimal coarse-grained model, these vibrational properties arise from a large acoustic impedance mismatch between the alternating layers of perovskite sheets and bulky organic cations. Our results inform on thermal transport in highly impedance-mismatched crystal sub-lattices and provide insights towards design of materials that exhibit highly anisotropic thermal dissipation properties.

Stable and Highly Efficient Photocatalysis with Two-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites.

Project description:Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have excellent photoelectric properties, such as high charge mobility and a high optical absorption coefficient, which have attracted enormous attention in the field of optoelectronic devices and photochemistry. However, the stability of 2D OIHPs in solution is deficient. In particular, the lack of stability in polar solutions hinders their application in photochemistry. In this work, (iso-BA)2PbI4 was used as a model to explore the three possibilities of the stable existence of a 2D perovskite in aqueous solution. And two of these systems that stabilize the presence of (iso-BA)2PbI4 were further investigated through electrochemical testing. Moreover, (iso-BA)2PbI4 2D hybrid perovskites exhibited an outstanding degradation rate. The chiral perovskite (R/S-MBA)2PbI4 is able to degrade a 30 mg/L methyl orange solution completely within 5 min, making it one of the fastest catalysts for this particular organic reaction. Further, based on the electron spin resonance test, a degradation mechanism by the halide perovskite was proposed. Based on the great catalytic performance as well as good reusability and stability, (R/S-MBA)2PbI4 perovskites are expected to be a new generation of catalysts, making a great impact on the application of asymmetrically catalyzed photoreactions.

Toward three-dimensional hybrid inorganic/organic optoelectronics based on GaN/oCVD-PEDOT structures.

Project description:The combination of inorganic semiconductors with organic thin films promises new strategies for the realization of complex hybrid optoelectronic devices. Oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) of conductive polymers offers a flexible and scalable path towards high-quality three-dimensional inorganic/organic optoelectronic structures. Here, hole-conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) grown by oxidative chemical vapor deposition is used to fabricate transparent and conformal wrap-around p-type contacts on three-dimensional microLEDs with large aspect ratios, a yet unsolved challenge in three-dimensional gallium nitride technology. The electrical characteristics of two-dimensional reference structures confirm the quasi-metallic state of the polymer, show high rectification ratios, and exhibit excellent thermal and temporal stability. We analyze the electroluminescence from a three-dimensional hybrid microrod/polymer LED array and demonstrate its improved optical properties compared with a purely inorganic microrod LED. The findings highlight a way towards the fabrication of hybrid three-dimensional optoelectronics on the sub-micron scale.

Microstructural Study of Two-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Nanosheet Degradation under Illumination.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have received substantial attention because of their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Although the applications of 2D perovskite nanosheets are promising in various optoelectronic devices, which all face harsh working conditions of light exposure, little is known about the photo-stability and degradation mechanisms of these 2D perovskite nanosheets. In this work, degradation of (C4H9NH3)2PbBr4 (BA2PbBr4) nanosheets when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light and white light is explored. The morphology, optical properties, and microstructure of the nanosheets, under different conditions of light exposure, was studied in detail. UV light is more destructive compared to white light, which both led to a nanosheet breakdown. A combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and electron diffraction revealed that the organic moieties are most sensitive to light exposure and partial disorder toward complete disorder takes place during light exposure. Moreover, excessive light exposure further causes a [PbBr6]4- octahedron tilt and re-ordering within the perovskite structure. This study could enrich the understanding of 2D perovskite nanosheets and their photostability, offer a new perspective in interpreting the light-perovskite interaction, and further help the design of robust and light-tunable 2D perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Lead Halides and Their Post-Synthesis Reversible Transformation into Three-Dimensional Perovskites.

Project description:Zero-dimensional (0D) mixed-halide hybrid organic-inorganic MA4PbX6·2H2O (MA = CH3NH3+; X = Br1 - xIx with 0 < x < 1) has been synthesized by a solvent-free mechanochemical approach. It has been shown that this 0D phase with sharp absorption features in the near-UV is a hydrated structure, which can be reversibly transformed into the three-dimensional perovskite phase MAPbX3 by simple thermal annealing (dehydration) in air. This work reveals a new approach to hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and related 0D structures, which have so far only been thoroughly studied for the inorganic Cs4PbX6 compounds.

Project description:A new organic-inorganic hybrid, [Pb(2)I(4)(C(4)H(13)N(3))](n), was obtained by the reaction of C(4)N(3)H(10) and PbI(2) at room temperature. The structure is a three-dimensional polymer resulting from the association of PbI(6) octa-hedra and a mixed lead organic-inorganic PbI(4)(C(4)N(3)H(13)) coordination polyhedron. Both Pb atoms, two I atoms and one N atom lie on a mirror plane. N-H⋯I hydrogen bonds further connect the organic unit and some I atoms.
