Temperature Effects and Activation Barriers in Aqueous Proton-Uptake Reactions.

ABSTRACT: Aqueous proton transfer reactions are fundamental in biology and chemistry, yet kinetics and mechanisms of strong base-weak acid reactions are not well understood. In this work, we present a temperature-dependent reaction kinetic study of the water-soluble photobase actinoquinol, in the presence and absence of succinimide, a weak acid reaction partner. We study the temperature dependence of the reaction and connect the observed dynamics to the reaction's thermodynamics. We find that actinoquinol reacts in associated complexes with water/succinimide, creating an intermediate complex that can undergo either dissociation to create products, or reverse proton transfer within the complex to recreate the initial reactants. We find that the intermediates' formation is energetically unfavorable with both reaction partners, which impacts the net reaction rates. We also find that the net reaction rate is additionally strongly influenced by the competition between the dissociation of the intermediates and their reverse reaction.

Observing Aqueous Proton-Uptake Reactions Triggered by Light.

Project description:Proton-transfer reactions in water are essential to chemistry and biology. Earlier studies reported on aqueous proton-transfer mechanisms by observing light-triggered reactions of strong (photo)acids and weak bases. Similar studies on strong (photo)base-weak acid reactions would also be of interest because earlier theoretical works found evidence for mechanistic differences between aqueous H+ and OH- transfer. In this work, we study the reaction of actinoquinol, a water-soluble strong photobase, with the water solvent and the weak acid succinimide. We find that in aqueous solutions containing succinimide, the proton-transfer reaction proceeds via two parallel and competing reaction channels. In the first channel, actinoquinol extracts a proton from water, after which the newly generated hydroxide ion is scavenged by succinimide. In the second channel, succinimide forms a hydrogen-bonded complex with actinoquinol and the proton is transferred directly. Interestingly, we do not observe proton conduction in water-separated actinoquinol-succinimide complexes, which makes the newly studied strong base-weak acid reaction essentially different from previously studied strong acid-weak base reactions.

Separating Proton and Electron Transfer Effects in Three-Component Concerted Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions.

Project description:Multiple-site concerted proton-electron transfer (MS-CPET) reactions were studied in a three-component system. 1-Hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPOH) was oxidized to the stable radical TEMPO by electron transfer to ferrocenium oxidants coupled to proton transfer to various pyridine bases. These MS-CPET reactions contrast with the usual reactivity of TEMPOH by hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to a single e-/H+ acceptor. The three-component reactions proceed by pre-equilibrium formation of a hydrogen-bonded adduct between TEMPOH and the pyridine base, and the adduct is then oxidized by the ferrocenium in a bimolecular MS-CPET step. The second-order rate constants, measured using stopped-flow kinetic techniques, spanned 4 orders of magnitude. An advantage of this system is that the MS-CPET driving force could be independently varied by changing either the pKa of the base or the reduction potential (E°) of the oxidant. Changes in ΔG°MS-CPET from either source had the same effect on the MS-CPET rate constants, and a combined Brønsted plot of ln(kMS-CPET) vs ln(Keq) was linear with a slope of 0.46. These results imply a synchronous concerted mechanism, in which the proton and electron transfer components of the CPET process make equal contributions to the rate constants. The only outliers to the Brønsted correlation are the reactions with sterically hindered pyridines, which apparently hinder the close approach of proton donor and acceptor that facilitates MS-CPET. These three-component reactions are compared with a related HAT reaction of TEMPOH, with the 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxyl radical. The MS-CPET and HAT oxidations of TEMPOH at the same driving force occurred with similar rate constants. While this is an imperfect comparison, the data suggest that the separation of the proton and electron to different reagents does not significantly inhibit the proton-coupled electron transfer process.

Iodine Activation from Iodate Reduction in Aqueous Films via Photocatalyzed and Dark Reactions.

Project description:Iodine in the atmosphere destroys ozone and can nucleate particles by formation of iodic acid, HIO3. Recent field observations suggest iodate recycles from particles sustaining significant gas-phase IO radical concentrations (0.06 pptv) in aged stratospheric air, and in elevated dust plumes. However, laboratory evidence for iodine activation from aerosols is currently missing. Here, a series of coated-wall flow tube (CWFT) experiments test for iodine release from thin aqueous films containing iodate. Photocatalyzed reactions were studied using iron(III) citrate (Fe-Cit), Arizona Test Dust (ATD), and Fe2O3, along with the dark reaction of iodate with H2O2 at 90% RH and 293 K. Fresh films were separately irradiated with visible and UV-A light, and the efficient release of molecular iodine, I2, was observed from all irradiated films containing photocatalysts. For films with Fe-Cit, visible light reduced larger amounts of iodate than UV-A light, activating ∼40% of iodate as I2. The formation of oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOC) and iodinated OVOC was also observed. Dark exposure of films to H2O2 led to I2 release in smaller amounts than suggested by Bray-Liebhafsky kinetics, consistent with H2O2 salting-out in the films, or possibly other reasons. Photochemical activation is enhanced by dust proxies in the film, and by aging the film with H2O2 in the dark prior to irradiation. These findings help explain recent field observations of elevated IO radical concentrations in lofted dust layers, and warrant the inclusion of photocatalyzed iodate reduction in atmospheric models.

Steric hindrance modulation of hexaazatribenzanthraquinone isomers for high-capacity and wide-temperature-range aqueous proton battery.

Project description:Organic materials with rich active sites are good candidates of high-capacity anodes in aqueous batteries, but commonly low utilization of active sites limits their capacity. Herein, two isomers, symmetric and asymmetric hexaazatribenzanthraquinone (s-HATBAQ and a-HATBAQ), with rich active sites have been synthesized in a controllable manner. It has been revealed for the first time that a sulfuric acid catalyst can facilitate the stereoselective formation of s-HATBAQ. Attributed to the reduced steric hindrance in favor of proton insertion as well as the amorphous structure conducive to electrochemical dynamics, s-HATBAQ exhibits 1.5 times larger specific capacity than a-HATBAQ. Consequently, the electrode of s-HATBAQ with 50% reduced graphene oxide (s-HATBAQ-50%rGO) delivers a record high specific capacity of 405 mAh g-1 in H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, the assembled MnO2//s-HATBAQ-50%rGO aqueous proton full batteries show an exceptional cycling stability at 25°C and can maintain ∼92% capacity after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g-1 at -80°C. This work demonstrates the controllable synthesis of isomers, showcases a wide-temperature-range prototype proton battery and highlights the significance of precise molecular structure modulation in organic energy storage.

Kinetic and vibrational isotope effects of proton transfer reactions in channelrhodopsin-2.

Project description:Channelrhodopsins (ChRs) are light-gated cation channels. After blue-light excitation, the protein undergoes a photocycle with different intermediates. Here, we have recorded transient absorbance changes of ChR2 from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in the visible and infrared regions with nanosecond time resolution, the latter being accomplished using tunable quantum cascade lasers. Because proton transfer reactions play a key role in channel gating, we determined vibrational as well as kinetic isotope effects (VIEs and KIEs) of carboxylic groups of various key aspartic and glutamic acid residues by monitoring their C=O stretching vibrations in H2O and in D2O. D156 exhibits a substantial KIE (>2) in its deprotonation and reprotonation, which substantiates its role as the internal proton donor to the retinal Schiff base. The unusual VIE of D156, upshifted from 1736 cm(-1) to 1738 cm(-1) in D2O, was scrutinized by studying the D156E variant. The C=O stretch of E156 shifted down by 8 cm(-1) in D2O, providing evidence for the accessibility of the carboxylic group. The C=O stretching band of E90 exhibits a VIE of 9 cm(-1) and a KIE of ∼2 for the de- and the reprotonation reactions during the lifetime of the late desensitized state. The KIE of 1 determined in the time range from 20 ns to 5 ms is incompatible with early deprotonation of E90.

Solvation Induction of Free Energy Barriers of Decarboxylation Reactions in Aqueous Solution from Dual-Level QM/MM Simulations.

Project description:Carbon dioxide capture, corresponding to the recombination process of decarboxylation reactions of organic acids, is typically barrierless in the gas phase and has a relatively low barrier in aprotic solvents. However, these processes often encounter significant solvent-reorganization-induced barriers in aqueous solution if the decarboxylation product is not immediately protonated. Both the intrinsic stereoelectronic effects and solute-solvent interactions play critical roles in determining the overall decarboxylation equilibrium and free energy barrier. An understanding of the interplay of these factors is important for designing novel materials applied to greenhouse gas capture and storage as well as for unraveling the catalytic mechanisms of a range of carboxy lyases in biological CO2 production. A range of decarboxylation reactions of organic acids with rates spanning nearly 30 orders of magnitude have been examined through dual-level combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical simulations to help elucidate the origin of solvation-induced free energy barriers for decarboxylation and the reverse carboxylation reactions in water.

Salt and Temperature Effects on Xanthan Gum Polysaccharide in Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:Xanthan gum (XG) is a carbohydrate polymer with anionic properties that is widely used as a rheology modifier in various applications, including foods and petroleum extraction. The aim was to investigate the effect of Na+, K+, and Ca2+ on the physicochemical properties of XG in an aqueous solution as a function of temperature. Huggins, Kraemer, and Rao models were applied to determine intrinsic viscosity, [η], by fitting the relative viscosity (ηrel) or specific viscosity (ηsp) of XG/water and XG/salt/water solutions. With increasing temperature in water, Rao 1 gave [η] the closest to the Huggins and Kraemer values. In water, [η] was more sensitive to temperature increase (~30% increase in [η], 20-50 °C) compared to salt solutions (~15-25% increase). At a constant temperature, salt counterions screened the XG side-chain-charged groups and decreased [η] by up to 60% over 0.05-100 mM salt. Overall, Ca2+ was much more effective than the monovalent cations in screening charge. As the salt valency and concentration increased, the XG coil radius decreased, making evident the effect of shielding the intramolecular and intermolecular XG anionic charge. The reduction in repulsive forces caused XG structural contraction. Further, higher temperatures led to chain expansion that facilitated increased intermolecular interactions, which worked against the salt effect.

Project description:The aqueous proton displays an anomalously large diffusion coefficient that is up to 7 times that of similarly sized cations. There is general consensus that the proton achieves its high diffusion through the Grotthuss mechanism, whereby protons hop from one molecule to the next. A main assumption concerning the extraction of the timescale of the Grotthuss mechanism from experimental results has been that, on average, there is an equal probability for the proton to hop to any of its neighboring water molecules. Herein, we present ab initio simulations that show this assumption is not generally valid. Specifically, we observe that there is an increased probability for the proton to revert back to its previous location. These correlations indicate that the interpretation of the experimental results need to be re-examined and suggest that the timescale of the Grotthuss mechanism is significantly shorter than was previously thought.

Barrier-Lowering Effects of Baird Antiaromaticity in Photoinduced Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer (PCET) Reactions.

Project description:Many popular organic chromophores that catalyze photoinduced proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions are aromatic in the ground state but become excited-state antiaromatic in the lowest ππ* state. We show that excited-state antiaromaticity makes electron transfer easier. Two representative photoinduced electron transfer processes are investigated: (1) the photolysis of phenol and (2) solar water splitting of a pyridine-water complex. In the selected reactions, the directions of electron transfer are opposite, but the net result is proton transfer following the direction of electron transfer. Nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS), ionization energies, electron affinities, and PCET energy profiles of selected [4n] and [4n + 2] π-systems are presented, and important mechanistic implications are discussed.

Higher activation barriers can lift exothermic rate restrictions in electron transfer and enable faster reactions.

Project description:Electron transfer reactions are arguably the simplest chemical reactions but they have not yet ceased to intrigue chemists. Charge-separation and charge-recombination reactions are at the core of life-sustaining processes, molecular electronics and solar cells. Intramolecular electron donor-acceptor systems capture the essential features of these reactions and enable their fundamental understanding. Here, we report intramolecular electron transfers covering a range of 100 kcal mol-1 in exothermicities that show an increase, then a decrease, and finally an increase in rates with the driving force of the reactions. Concomitantly, apparent activation energies change from positive, to negative and finally to positive. Reactions with positive activation energies are found to be faster than analogous reactions with negative effective activation energies. The increase of the reorganization energy with the driving force of the reactions can explain the peculiar free-energy relationship observed in this work.
