Aqueous Phase Hydrogenation of 4-(2-Furyl)-3-buten-2-one over Different Re Phases.

ABSTRACT: 4-(2-furyl)-3-buten-2-one (FAc) is obtained by aldol condensation of furfural and acetone and has been used in hydrodeoxygenation reactions to obtain fuel products using noble metal catalysts. The hydrogenation of FAc in the aqueous phase using metallic- and Re oxide-supported catalysts on graphite was studied, within a temperature range of 200-240 °C, in a batch reactor over a 6 h reaction period. The catalysts were characterized using N₂ adsorption-desorption, TPR-H₂, TPD-NH₃, XRD, and XPS analyses. Catalytic reactions revealed that metallic rhenium and rhenium oxide-supported catalysts are active for the hydrogenation and Piancatelli rearrangement of FAc. Notably, metallic rhenium exhibited a fourfold higher initial rate than rhenium oxide, which was attributed to the higher dispersion of Re in the Re/G catalyst over graphite. Re/G and ReOx/G catalysts tended to rearrange and hydrogenate FAc to 2-(2-oxopropyl)cyclopenta-1-one in water.

Effective Hydrogenation of 3-(2"-furyl)- and 3-(2"-thienyl)-1-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-prop-2-en-1-one in Selected Yeast Cultures.

Project description:Biotransformations were performed on eight selected yeast strains, all of which were able to selectively hydrogenate the chalcone derivatives 3-(2"-furyl)- (1) and 3-(2"-thienyl)-1-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-prop-2-en-1-one (3) into 3-(2"-furyl)- (2) and 3-(2"-thienyl)-1-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-propan-1-one (4) respectively. The highest efficiency of hydrogenation of the double bond in the substrate 1 was observed in the cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCh 464 and Yarrowia lipolytica KCh 71 strains. The substrate was converted into the product with > 99% conversion just in six hours after biotransformation started. The compound containing the sulfur atom in its structure was most effectively transformed by the Yarrowia lipolytica KCh 71 culture strain (conversion > 99%, obtained after three hours of substrate incubation). Also, we observed that, different strains of tested yeasts are able to carry out the bioreduction of the used substrate with different yields, depending on the presence of induced and constitutive ene reductases in their cells. The biggest advantage of this process is the efficient production of one product, practically without the formation of side products.

Hydrogen Bonding Enhances the Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Benzaldehyde in the Aqueous Phase.

Project description:The hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol on carbon-supported metals in water, enabled by an external potential, is markedly promoted by polarization of the functional groups. The presence of polar co-adsorbates, such as substituted phenols, enhances the hydrogenation rate of the aldehyde by two effects, that is, polarizing the carbonyl group and increasing the probability of forming a transition state for H addition. These two effects enable a hydrogenation route, in which phenol acts as a conduit for proton addition, with a higher rate than the direct proton transfer from hydronium ions. The fast hydrogenation enabled by the presence of phenol and applied potential overcompensates for the decrease in coverage of benzaldehyde caused by competitive adsorption. A higher acid strength of the co-adsorbate increases the intensity of interactions and the rates of selective carbonyl reduction.

Efficient Hydrogenation of Xylose and Hemicellulosic Hydrolysate to Xylitol over Ni-Re Bimetallic Nanoparticle Catalyst.

Project description:A disadvantage of the commercial Raney Ni is that the Ni active sites are prone to leaching and deactivation in the hydrogenation of xylose to xylitol. To explore a more stable and robust catalyst, activated carbon (AC) supported Ni-Re bimetallic catalysts (Ni-Re/AC) were synthesized and used to hydrogenate xylose and hemicellulosic hydrolysate into xylitol under mild reaction conditions. In contrast to the monometallic Ni/AC catalyst, bimetallic Ni-Re/AC exhibited better catalytic performances in the hydrogenation of xylose to xylitol. A high xylitol yield up to 98% was achieved over Ni-Re/AC (nNi:nRe = 1:1) at 140 °C for 1 h. In addition, these bimetallic catalysts also had superior hydrogenation performance in the conversion of the hydrolysate derived from the hydrolysis reaction of the hemicellulose of Camellia oleifera shell. The characterization results showed that the addition of Re led to the formation of Ni-Re alloy and improved the dispersion of Ni active sites. The recycled experimental results revealed that the monometallic Ni and the bimetallic Ni-Re catalysts tended to deactivate, but the introduction of Re was able to remarkably improve the catalyst's stability and reduce the Ni leaching during the hydrogenation reaction.

One-incubation one-hour multiplex ELISA enabled by aqueous two-phase systems.

Project description:This work describes a convenient one-hour enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) formulated with conventional antibodies and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) reagents. The method utilizes aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) droplet formation based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-containing sample solution-triggered rehydration of dehydrated dextran (DEX) spots that contain all antibody reagents. Key advances in this paper include development of a formulation that allows a quick 1-hour overall incubation time and a procedure where inclusion of the HRP reagent in the PEG solution reduces the number of washing and incubation steps required to perform this assay. As an assay application, a 5-plex cytokine test compares cytokine secretion of differentially-treated human ThP-1 macrophages. Given the use of only readily available reagents and a common Western blot imaging system for the readout, this method is envisioned to be broadly applicable to a variety of multiplex immunoassays. To facilitate broader use, companion image processing software as an ImageJ plugin is also described and provided.

Graphene Chainmail Shelled Dilute Ni─Cu Alloy for Selective and Robust Aqueous Phase Catalytic Hydrogenation.

Project description:Cost-effective non-noble metal-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation with excellent activity, selectivity, and durability are still the holy grail. Herein, an oxygen-doped carbon (OC) chainmail encapsulated dilute Cu-Ni alloy is developed by simple pyrolysis of Cu/Ni-metal-organic framework. The CuNi0.05@OC catalyst displays superior performance for atmospheric pressure transfer hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene and p-nitrophenol, and for hydrogenation of furfural, all in water and with exceptional durability. Comprehensive characterizations confirm the close interactions between the diluted Ni sites, the base Cu, and optimized three-layered graphene chainmail. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the properly tuned lattice strain and Schottky junction can adjust electron density to facilitate specific adsorption on the active centers, thus enhancing the catalytic activity and selectivity, while the OC shell also offers robust protection. This work provides a simple and environmentally friendly strategy for developing practical heterogeneous catalysts that bring the synergistic effect into play between dilute alloy and functional carbon wrapping.

Liquid Phase Hydrogenation of Pharmaceutical Interest Nitroarenes over Gold-Supported Alumina Nanowires Catalysts.

Project description:In this work, Au nanoparticles, supported in Al2O3 nanowires (ANW) modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane were synthetized, for their use as catalysts in the hydrogenation reaction of 4-(2-fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)-morpholine and 4-(4-nitrophenyl)morpholin-3-one. ANW was obtained by hydrothermal techniques and the metal was incorporated by the reduction of the precursor with NaBH4 posterior to superficial modification. The catalysts were prepared at different metal loadings and were characterized by different techniques. The characterization revealed structured materials in the form of nanowires and a successful superficial modification. All catalysts show that Au is in a reduced state and the shape of the nanoparticles is spherical, with high metal dispersion and size distributions from 3.7 to 4.6 nm. The different systems supported in modified-ANW were active and selective in the hydrogenation reaction of both substrates, finding for all catalytic systems a selectivity of almost 100% to the aromatic amine. Catalytic data showed pseudo first-order kinetics with respect to the substrate for all experimental conditions used in this work. The solvent plays an important role in the activity and selectivity of the catalyst, where the highest efficiency and operational stability was achieved when ethanol was used as the solvent.

Hydrogen Bond Arrangement Is Shown to Differ in Coexisting Phases of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems.

Project description:Analysis by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows that each coexisting phase in aqueous two-phase systems has a different arrangement of hydrogen bonds. Specific arrangements vary for systems formed by different solutes. The hydrogen bond arrangement is shown to correlate with differences in hydrophobic and electrostatic properties of the different phases of five specific systems, four formed by two polymers and one by a single polymer and salt. The results presented here suggest that the arrangement of hydrogen bonds may be an important factor in phase separation.

Silylated Zeolites With Enhanced Hydrothermal Stability for the Aqueous-Phase Hydrogenation of Levulinic Acid to ?-Valerolactone.

Project description:A systematic silylation approach using mono-, di-, and trichlorosilanes with different alkyl chain lengths was employed to enhance the hydrothermal stability of zeolite Y. DRIFT spectra of the silylated zeolites indicate that the attachment of the silanes takes place at surface silanol groups. Regarding hydrothermal stability under aqueous-phase processing (APP) conditions, i.e., pH ? 2, 473 K and autogenous pressure, the selective silylation of the zeolite surface using monochlorosilanes has no considerable influence. By using trichlorosilanes, the hydrothermal stability of zeolite Y can be improved significantly as proven by a stability test in an aqueous solution of 0.2 M levulinic acid (LA) and 0.6 M formic acid (FA) at 473 K. However, the silylation with trichlorosilanes results in a significant loss of total specific pore volume and total specific surface area, e.g., 0.35 cm3 g-1 and 507 m2 g-1 for the silylated zeolite Y functionalized with n-octadecyltrichlorosilane compared to 0.51 cm3 g-1 and 788 m2 g-1 for the parent zeolite Y. The hydrogenation of LA to ?-valerolactone (GVL) was conducted over 3 wt.-% Pt on zeolite Y (3PtY) silylated with either n-octadecyltrichlorosilane or methyltrichlorosilane using different reducing agents, e.g., FA or H2. While in the stability test an enhanced hydrothermal stability was found for zeolite Y silylated with n-octadecyltrichlorosilane, its stability in the hydrogenation of LA was far less pronounced. Only by applying an excess amount of methyltrichlorosilane, i.e., 10 mmol per 1 g of zeolite Y, presumably resulting in a high degree of polymerization among the silanes, a recognizable improvement of the stability of the 3 PtY catalyst could be achieved. Nonetheless, the pore blockage found for zeolite Y silylated with an excess amount of methyltrichlorosilane was reflected in a drastically lower GVL yield at 493 K using FA as reducing agent, i.e., 12 vs. 34% for 3PtY after 24 h.

The effect of Fe2O3 crystal phases on CO2 hydrogenation.

Project description:The effect of Fe2O3 crystal phases on their performance in CO2 hydrogenation was studied. ?-Fe2O3 crystal was prepared by precipitation method from Fe(NO3)3·9H2O and (NH4)2CO3, and ?-Fe2O3 was prepared by grinding Fe(NO3)3·9H2O and L(+)-Tartaric acid in agate mortar completely. The crystal phases of Fe2O3 influence the distribution of promoter Zn, K and Cu on catalysts. The dispersity of K on ?-Fe2O3 surface is higher than ?-Fe2O3. On the contrary, Cu and Zn are more dispersive on ?-Fe2O3 surface than ?-Fe2O3. The catalyst in ?-Fe2O3 phase is easily reduced relative to the catalyst in ?-Fe2O3 phase. The former presents higher CO2 conversion and C2+ hydrocarbon selectivity than the latter in CO2 hydrogenation.
