Enhanced TiO₂-Based Photocatalytic Volatile Organic Compound Decomposition Combined with Ultrasonic Atomization in the Co-Presence of Carbon Black and Heavy Metal Nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are representative indoor air pollutants that negatively affect the human body owing to their toxicity. One of the most promising methods for VOC removal is photocatalytic degradation using TiO₂. In this study, the addition of carbon black (CB) and heavy metal nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated to improve the efficiency of a TiO₂-based photocatalytic VOC decomposition system combined with ultrasonic atomization and ultraviolet irradiation, as described previously. The addition of CB and Ag NPs significantly improved the degradation efficiency. A comparison with other heavy metal nanoparticles and their respective roles are discussed.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of carbon fiber paper supported TiO2 under the ultrasonic synergy effect.

Project description:In the present work, TiO2 rutile nanorods and anatase nanoflakes have been grown on carbon fiber paper (CFP) by the hydrothermal method. Their photoelectrochemical properties and photocatalytic performances have been investigated. The introduction of CFP is found to improve visible light absorption intensity and effective surface areas apparently, and also make TiO2 photocatalysts easier to recycle from aqueous waste. An ultrasonic field was employed during the process of photocatalysis. Sono-photocatalytic efficiency is found to be enhanced significantly in comparison with those of photocatalysis and sonocatalysis, which indicates a positive ultrasonic synergy effect. The scavenger experiments reveal that superoxide radicals (˙O2 -) and hydroxyl (˙OH) are the predominant active species during the dye degradation sono-photocatalytic process assisted by CFP-supported TiO2 catalysts. To investigate the ultrasonic synergy photocatalytic effect, the generated amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected and quantitatively evaluated under visible light, ultrasound, and the combined condition of visible light and ultrasound. As a result, the present work provides an efficient way to improve photocatalytic performance and to realize easy recovery of photocatalyst, which will be helpful for better design of advanced photocatalysts for practical applications.

Preparation of ZnO@TiO2 nanotubes heterostructured film by thermal decomposition and their photocatalytic performances.

Project description:TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) arrays prepared by anodic oxidation were modified with ZnO particles and their morphology and photocatalytic properties were investigated. A simple thermal decomposition process was involved in the modification method. Zinc acetate solution was filled into the TiO2 NTs arrays, and ZnO@TiO2 heterojunction films were formed after the thermal treatment. The morphology and catalytic properties of the heterojunction films could be manipulated by the concentration of zinc acetate solution. Compared to TiO2 NTs arrays, the ZnO@TiO2 heterojunction films with an optimized concentration of zinc acetate showed enhanced catalytic performances. Their photocatalytic activities were discussed with respect to the formation of ZnO@TiO2 heterojunctions and enforced charge separation. This study demonstrates a simple method to prepare ZnO nanoparticles@TiO2 NT heterojunction films, which is promising for other environmental and energy related applications.

Photocatalytic Abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds by TiO2 Nanoparticles Doped with Either Phosphorous or Zirconium.

Project description:The aim of this work is to study the activity of novel TiO2-based photocatalysts doped with either phosphorus or zirconium under a UV-Vis source. A set of mesoporous catalysts was prepared by the direct synthesis: TiO2_A and TiO2_B (titanium oxide synthesized by two different procedures), P-TiO2 and Zr-TiO2 (binary oxides with either nonmetal or metal into the TiO2 framework). Complementary characterizations (N2 physisorption at 77 K, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and (DR)UV-Vis spectroscopy) were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the prepared catalysts. Then, the photocatalysts were tested for the oxidation of propylene and ethylene under UV-Vis light. As a result, the most promising catalyst for both the propylene and ethylene oxidation reactions was the P-TiO2 (propylene conversion = 27.8% and ethylene conversion = 13%, TOS = 3 h), thus confirming the beneficial effect of P-doping into the TiO2 framework on the photocatalytic activity.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by ultrasonic-assisted electrospray TiO2/graphene oxide on polyacrylonitrile/β-cyclodextrin nanofibrous membranes.

Project description:Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) composite nanofibrous membranes immobilized with nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by electrospinning and ultrasonic-assisted electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that TiO2 and GO were more evenly dispersed on the surface and inside of the nanofibers after 45 min of ultrasonic treatment. Adding TiO2 and GO reduced the fiber diameter; the minimum fiber diameter was 84.66 ± 40.58 nm when the mass ratio of TiO2-to-GO was 8:2 (PAN/β-CD nanofibrous membranes was 191.10 ± 45.66 nm). Using the anionic dye methyl orange (MO) and the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as pollutant models, the photocatalytic activity of the nanofibrous membrane under natural sunlight was evaluated. It was found that PAN/β-CD/TiO2/GO composite nanofibrous membrane with an 8:2 mass ratio of TiO2-to-GO exhibited the best degradation efficiency for the dyes. The degradation efficiency for MB and MO were 93.52 ± 1.83% and 90.92 ± 1.52%, respectively. Meanwhile, the PAN/β-CD/TiO2/GO composite nanofibrous membrane also displayed good antibacterial properties and the degradation efficiency for MB and MO remained above 80% after 3 cycles. In general, the PAN/β-CD/TiO2/GO nanofibrous membrane is eco-friendly, reusable, and has great potential for the removal of dyes from industrial wastewaters.

One-step synthesis of black TiO2-x microspheres by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process and their visible-light-driven photocatalytic activities.

Project description:Black TiO2-x has recently emerged as one of the most promising visible-light-driven photocatalysts, but current synthesis routes that require a reduction step are not compatible with cost-effective mass production and a relatively large particle such as microspheres. Herein, we demonstrate a simple, fast, cost-effective and scalable one-step process based on an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis for the synthesis of black TiO2-x microspheres. The process utilizes an oxygen-deficient environment during the pyrolysis of titanium precursors to directly introduce oxygen vacancies into synthesized TiO2 products, and thus a reduction step is not required. Droplets of a titanium precursor solution were generated by ultrasound energy and dragged with continuous N2 flow into a furnace for the decomposition of the precursor and crystallization to TiO2 and through such a process spherical black TiO2-x microspheres were obtained at 900 °C. The synthesized black TiO2-x microsphere with trivalent titanium/oxygen vacancy clearly showed the variation of physicochemical properties compared with those of white TiO2. In addition, the synthesized microspheres presented the superior photocatalytic activity for degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. This work presents a new methodology for a simple one-step synthesis of black metal oxides microspheres with oxygen vacancies for visible-light-driven photocatalysts with a higher efficiency.

In Situ Spectroscopic and Computational Studies on a MnO2-CuO Catalyst for Use in Volatile Organic Compound Decomposition.

Project description:In situ near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations were conducted to demonstrate the decomposition mechanism of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA) on a MnO2-CuO catalyst. The catalytic activity of MnO2-CuO was higher than that of MnO2 at low temperatures, although the pore properties of MnO2 were similar to those of MnO2-CuO. In addition, whereas the chemical state of MnO2 remained constant following PGMEA dosing at 150 °C, MnO2-CuO was reduced under identical conditions, as confirmed by in situ NEXAFS spectroscopy. These results indicate that the presence of Cu in the MnO2-CuO catalyst enables the release of oxygen at lower temperatures. More specifically, the released oxygen originated from the Mn-O-Cu moiety on the top layer of the MnO2-CuO structure, as confirmed by calculation of the oxygen release energies in various oxygen positions of MnO2-CuO. Furthermore, the spectral changes in the in situ NEXAFS spectrum of MnO2-CuO following the catalytic reaction at 150 °C corresponded well with those of the simulated NEXAFS spectrum following oxygen release from Mn-O-Cu. Finally, after the completion of the catalytic reaction, the quantities of lactone and ether functionalities in PGMEA decreased, whereas the formation of C=C bonds was observed.

Preparation of TiO2 Nanorods@Ni-Foam for Photocatalytic Decomposition of Acetaldehyde-In Situ FTIR Surface Investigation.

Project description:TNR@Ni-foam structures were prepared by an alkaline hydrothermal method in an autoclave in a strongly alkaline medium (10 M NaOH) at 150 °C with further acid washing (0.1 M HNO3) and a second hydrothermal treatment in an autoclave at 180 °C. Two TiO2 samples were used for preparation: anatase and P25 of mixed anatase and rutile phases. After the first step of hydrothermal treatment, a layered titanate structure was obtained (Na2Ti3O7). Acid washing caused the substitution of Na+ by H+ and launched the formation of TNR. After the second hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C, for the optimal quantity of acid used for washing (10 mL per 0.75 g of TiO2), titania was crystallized to an anatase phase with small quantities of brookite and rutile. The structures obtained from P25 exhibited more brookite and rutile than those based on the anatase precursor. The morphology of TNR@Ni-foam structures was observed by SEM. The obtained composites were tested for acetaldehyde photodegradation (240 ppm in air) during the continuous flow of gas (5 mL/min) through the reactor coupled with FTIR. The most active samples were those obtained from P25, which had a crystalline structure of TiO2 and contained the lowest quantity of residue Na species.

UV-light-responsive Ag/TiO2/PVA nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of Cr, Ni, Zn, and Cu heavy metal ions.

Project description:The rapid growth of industrialization has led to the uncontrolled pollution of the environment, and rapid action is needed. This study synthesized Ag/TiO2/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nano photocatalyst for promising light-derived photocatalytic removal of heavy metal ions. The design of experiment (DOE) was used to study the effect of important factors (pH, reaction time, and photocatalyst dosage) to maximize the final performance of the photocatalyst. In the optimized condition, the Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst removed more than 94% of Cr6+ in 180 min, and the efficiency was more than 70% for Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ metal ions. The adsorption of the heavy metal ions on the photocatalyst was described well with the Langmuir isotherm, while the pseudo-second-order linear kinetic model fitted with the experimental data. The nano-photocatalyst's stability was confirmed after maintaining its performance for five successive runs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for the heavy metal ions removal can be attributed to the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles (electron transfer and plasmonic fields mechanisms) and PVA, which delayed the recombination of electron-hole. The synthesized ternary Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst showed promising performance for the elimination of heavy metal ions and can be used for environmental remediation purposes.

Photocatalytic performance of biochar-modified TiO2 (C/TiO2) for ammonia-nitrogen removal.

Project description:Biochar-modified TiO2 (C/TiO2) was prepared by a sol-gel method in this study to improve the photocatalytic capacity for ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) removal from aqueous solutions. The results showed that biochar was successfully modified on TiO2 and helped improve its photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation. The removal capacity of ammonia-nitrogen on the synthesized photocatalyst performed well at pH 10 with 1 g L-1 C/TiO2 under both 60 (12.25 mg g-1) and 120 min (16.31 mg g-1) irradiation (xenon lamp, AM1.5, 25 A). Characterization of C/TiO2 through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) analyses showed the successful introduction of biochar on TiO2. SEM-EDS and BET analyses displayed that C/TiO2 had a larger surface area and more pores than the raw materials. XRD spectroscopy illustrated that C/TiO2 had typical characteristic peaks of anatase-TiO2 and presented a good photocatalytic degradation performance. It was confirmed from XPS and FT-IR analyses that -COOH groups were present in C/TiO2 and originated from biochar modification, and these enhanced the photocatalytic performance. Through radical quenching experiments, it was found that superoxide radicals (˙O2-) played a dominant role in NH3-N photocatalytic reactions with hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and valence band holes (h+) playing a synergistic role. N2 was the main degradation product after 6 h NH3-N photocatalytic degradation, which was much larger than NO3-/NO2- (both almost undetected) and NH3 (ca. 2 times lower than N2). The new composite C/TiO2 has potential for ammonia-nitrogen degradation in wastewater treatment and favorable for treating sewage sludge.

Ultrasonic atomization of liquids in drop-chain acoustic fountains.

Project description:When focused ultrasound waves of moderate intensity in liquid encounter an air interface, a chain of drops emerges from the liquid surface to form what is known as a drop-chain fountain. Atomization, or the emission of micro-droplets, occurs when the acoustic intensity exceeds a liquid-dependent threshold. While the cavitation-wave hypothesis, which states that atomization arises from a combination of capillary-wave instabilities and cavitation bubble oscillations, is currently the most accepted theory of atomization, more data on the roles of cavitation, capillary waves, and even heat deposition or boiling would be valuable. In this paper, we experimentally test whether bubbles are a significant mechanism of atomization in drop-chain fountains. High-speed photography was used to observe the formation and atomization of drop-chain fountains composed of water and other liquids. For a range of ultrasonic frequencies and liquid sound speeds, it was found that the drop diameters approximately equalled the ultrasonic wavelengths. When water was exchanged for other liquids, it was observed that the atomization threshold increased with shear viscosity. Upon heating water, it was found that the time to commence atomization decreased with increasing temperature. Finally, water was atomized in an overpressure chamber where it was found that atomization was significantly diminished when the static pressure was increased. These results indicate that bubbles, generated by either acoustic cavitation or boiling, contribute significantly to atomization in the drop-chain fountain.
