Fast-Activated Minimal Gated Unit: Lightweight Processing and Feature Recognition for Multiple Mechanical Impact Signals.

ABSTRACT: Multiple dynamic impact signals are widely used in a variety of engineering scenarios and are difficult to identify accurately and quickly due to the signal adhesion phenomenon caused by nonlinear interference. To address this problem, an intelligent algorithm combining wavelet transforms with lightweight neural networks is proposed. First, the features of multiple impact signals are analyzed by establishing a transfer model for multiple impacts in multibody dynamical systems, and interference is suppressed using wavelet transformation. Second, a lightweight neural network, i.e., fast-activated minimal gated unit (FMGU), is elaborated for multiple impact signals, which can reduce computational complexity and improve real-time performance. Third, the experimental results show that the proposed method maintains excellent feature recognition results compared to gate recurrent unit (GRU) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks under all test datasets with varying impact speeds, while its metrics for computational complexity are 50% lower than those of the GRU and LSTM. Therefore, the proposed method is of great practical value for weak hardware application platforms that require the accurate identification of multiple dynamic impact signals in real time.

Project description:Human Action Recognition (HAR) is an essential topic in computer vision and artificial intelligence, focused on the automatic identification and categorization of human actions or activities from video sequences or sensor data. The goal of HAR is to teach machines to comprehend and interpret human movements, gestures, and behaviors, allowing for a wide range of applications in areas such as surveillance, healthcare, sports analysis, and human-computer interaction. HAR systems utilize a variety of techniques, including deep learning, motion analysis, and feature extraction, to capture and analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of human actions. These systems have the capacity to distinguish between various actions, whether they are simple actions like walking and waving or more complex activities such as playing a musical instrument or performing sports maneuvers. HAR continues to be an active area of research and development, with the potential to enhance numerous real-world applications by providing machines with the ability to understand and respond to human actions effectively. In our study, we developed a HAR system to recognize actions in tennis using an attention-based gated recurrent unit (GRU), a prevalent recurrent neural network. The combination of GRU architecture and attention mechanism showed a significant improvement in prediction power compared to two other deep learning models. Our models were trained on the THETIS dataset, one of the standard medium-sized datasets for fine-grained tennis actions. The effectiveness of the proposed model was confirmed by three different types of image encoders: InceptionV3, DenseNet, and EfficientNetB5. The models developed with InceptionV3, DenseNet, and EfficientNetB5 achieved average ROC-AUC values of 0.97, 0.98, and 0.81, respectively. While, the models obtained average PR-AUC values of 0.84, 0.87, and 0.49 for InceptionV3, DenseNet, and EfficientNetB5 features, respectively. The experimental results confirmed the applicability of our proposed method in recognizing action in tennis and may be applied to other HAR problems.

Project description:The EMG signal indicates the electrophysiological response to daily living of activities, particularly to lower-limb knee exercises. Literature reports have shown numerous benefits of the Wavelet analysis in EMG feature extraction for pattern recognition. However, its application to typical knee exercises when using only a single EMG channel is limited. In this study, three types of knee exercises, i.e., flexion of the leg up (standing), hip extension from a sitting position (sitting) and gait (walking) are investigated from 14 healthy untrained subjects, while EMG signals from the muscle group of vastus medialis and the goniometer on the knee joint of the detected leg are synchronously monitored and recorded. Four types of lower-limb motions including standing, sitting, stance phase of walking, and swing phase of walking, are segmented. The Wavelet Transform (WT) based Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) approach is proposed for the classification of four lower-limb motions using a single-channel EMG signal from the muscle group of vastus medialis. Based on lower-limb motions from all subjects, the combination of five-level wavelet decomposition and SVD is used to comprise the feature vector. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) is then configured to build a multiple-subject classifier for which the subject independent accuracy will be given across all subjects for the classification of four types of lower-limb motions. In order to effectively indicate the classification performance, EMG features from time-domain (e.g., Mean Absolute Value (MAV), Root-Mean-Square (RMS), integrated EMG (iEMG), Zero Crossing (ZC)) and frequency-domain (e.g., Mean Frequency (MNF) and Median Frequency (MDF)) are also used to classify lower-limb motions. The five-fold cross validation is performed and it repeats fifty times in order to acquire the robust subject independent accuracy. Results show that the proposed WT-based SVD approach has the classification accuracy of 91.85%±0.88% which outperforms other feature models.

Project description:The purpose of this study is to put forward a feature extraction and pattern recognition method for the flow noise signal of natural gas pipelines in view of the complex situation brought by the rapid development and expansion of urban natural gas infrastructure in China, especially in the case that there are active and abandoned pipelines, metal and nonmetal pipelines, and natural gas, water and power pipelines coexist in the underground of the city. Because the underground situation is unknown, gas leakage incidents caused by natural gas pipeline rupture occur from time to time, posing a threat to personal safety. Therefore, the motivation of this study is to provide a feasible method to accelerate the aging, renewal and transformation of urban natural gas pipelines to ensure the safe operation of urban natural gas pipeline network and promote the high-quality development of urban economy. Through the combination of experimental test and numerical simulation, this study establishes a database of urban natural gas pipeline flow noise signals, and uses principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the characteristics of flow noise signals, and develops a mathematical model for feature extraction. Then, a classification and recognition model based on backpropagation neural network (BPNN) is constructed, which realizes the detection and recognition of convective noise signals. The research results show that the theoretical method based on acoustic feature analysis provides guidance for the orderly and safe construction of urban natural gas pipeline network and ensures its safe operation. The research conclusion shows that through the simulation analysis of 75 groups of gas pipeline flow noise under different working conditions. Combined with the experimental verification of ground flow noise signals, the feature extraction and pattern recognition method proposed in this study has a recognition accuracy of up to 97% under strong noise background, which confirms the accuracy of numerical simulation and provides theoretical basis and technical support for the detection and recognition of urban gas pipeline flow noise.
