The Effects of Pulsed Electrospinning Process Variables on the Size of Polymer Fibers Established with a 2³ Factorial Design.

ABSTRACT: In the present study, the influence of the electrical parameters of the pulsed electrospinning process, such as the electrical voltage, the frequency of pulses, and the pulse duration, on the structure of obtained nonwovens was determined for the first time. It was found that all the parameters studied strongly influence the average diameter of the obtained fibers and that the pulsed electrospinning process carried out under specific conditions makes it possible to obtain, among other things, bimodal nonwovens. A 2³ factorial design was used to determine how the selected electrical parameters of the pulsed electrospinning process affect the structure of the resulting electrospun mats. It is shown, among other things, that by appropriately selecting the parameters of the electrospinning process, the thickness of fibers can be controlled, resulting in nonwovens with a desired morphology.

Engineering of bio-hybrid materials by electrospinning polymer-microbe fibers.

Project description:Although microbes have been used in industrial and niche applications for several decades, successful immobilization of microbes while maintaining their usefulness for any desired application has been elusive. Such a functionally bioactive system has distinct advantages over conventional batch and continuous-flow microbial reactor systems that are used in various biotechnological processes. This article describes the use of polyethylene oxide(99)-polypropylene oxide(67)-polyethylene oxide(99) triblock polymer fibers, created via electrospinning, to encapsulate microbes of 3 industrially relevant genera, namely, Pseudomonas, Zymomonas, and Escherichia. The presence of bacteria inside the fibers was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and SEM. Although the electrospinning process typically uses harsh organic solvents and extreme conditions that generally are harmful to bacteria, we describe techniques that overcome these limitations. The encapsulated microbes were viable for several months, and their metabolic activity was not affected by immobilization; thus they could be used in various applications. Furthermore, we have engineered a microbe-encapsulated cross-linked fibrous polymeric material that is insoluble. Also, the microbe-encapsulated active matrix permits efficient exchange of nutrients and metabolic products between the microorganism and the environment. The present results demonstrate the potential of the electrospinning technique for the encapsulation and immobilization of bacteria in the form of a synthetic biofilm, while retaining their metabolic activity. This study has wide-ranging implications in the engineering and use of novel bio-hybrid materials or biological thin-film catalysts.

White-Light Emission of Dye-Doped Polymer Submicronic Fibers Produced by Electrospinning.

Project description:Lighting and display technologies are evolving at tremendous rates nowadays; new device architectures based on new, microscopic building blocks are being developed. Besides high light-emission efficiencies, qualities including low cost, low environmental impact, flexibility, or lightweightness are sought for developing new types of devices. Electrospun polymer fibers represent an interesting type of such microscopic structures that can be employed in developing new functionalities. White-light-emitting fiber mats were prepared by the electrospinning of different dye-doped polymer solutions. Two approaches were used in order to obtain white-light emissions: the overlapping of single-dye-doped electrospun fiber mats, and the electrospinning of mixtures of different ratios of single-dye-doped polymer solutions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the morphologies of the electrospun fibers with diameters ranging between 300 nm and 1 µm. Optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) were evaluated for single-dye-doped submicronic fiber mats, for overlapping mats, and for fiber mats obtained from different compositions of mixtures. Depending on the ratios of the mixtures of different dyes, the luminance was balanced between blue and red emissions. Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) measurements depict this fine-tuning of the colors' intensities, and the right composition for white-light emission of the submicronic fiber mats was found.

Enhanced Electrospinning of Active Organic Fibers by Plasma Treatment on Conjugated Polymer Solutions.

Project description:Realizing active, light-emitting fibers made of conjugated polymers by the electrospinning method is generally challenging. Electrospinning of plasma-treated conjugated polymer solutions is here developed for the production of light-emitting microfibers and nanofibers. Active fibers from conjugated polymer solutions rapidly processed by a cold atmospheric argon plasma are electrospun in an effective way, and they show a smoother surface and bead-less morphology, as well as preserved optical properties in terms of absorption, emission, and photoluminescence quantum yield. In addition, the polarization of emitted light and more notably photon waveguiding along the length of individual fibers are remarkably enhanced by electrospinning plasma-treated solutions. These properties come from a synergetic combination of favorable intermolecular coupling in the solutions, increased order of macromolecules on the nanoscale, and resulting fiber morphology. Such findings make the coupling of the electrospinning method and cold atmospheric plasma processing on conjugated polymer solutions a highly promising and possibly general route to generate light-emitting and conductive micro- and nanostructures for organic photonics and electronics.

Influence of Polymer Relaxation Time on the Electrospinning Process: Numerical Investigation.

Project description:"Electrospinnability", or the ease with which a solution can be used to obtain bead-free uniform fibers, depends on a large number of parameters, including solution properties, process parameters and ambient conditions. In this study, the effect of the polymer relaxation time on electrospinning of dilute polymer solutions is investigated numerically. It is shown that elastic stresses (ES) increase exponentially with the Deborah number ( D e ). For each polymer concentration there exists a critical D e below which the ES are insufficient to overcome capillary stresses (CS) and lead to the formation of beaded fibers. However, above the critical D e , there is a higher probability of the ES overcoming the CS and leading to the formation of uniform fibers. This analysis suggests the possibility of improved electrospinnability even with dilute polymer solutions, provided the relaxation time is sufficiently large. It is also found that changes in the drag coefficient due to change in the polymer conformation and self-concentration of polymer molecules would become significant for the electrospinning of polymer solutions with a longer relaxation time and high conductivity.

Thermochromic Fibers via Electrospinning.

Project description:Cholesteryl ester liquid crystals exhibit thermochromic properties related to the existence of a twisted nematic phase. We formulate ternary mixtures of cholesteryl benzoate (CB), cholesteryl pelargonate (CP), and cholesteryl oleyl carbonate (COC) to achieve thermochromic behavior. We aim to achieve thermochromic fibers by incorporating the liquid crystal formulations into electrospun fibers. Two methods of incorporating the liquid crystal (LC) are compared: (1) blend electrospinning and (2) coaxial electrospinning using the same solvent system for the liquid crystal. For blend electrospinning, intermolecular interactions seem to be important in facilitating fiber formation since addition of LC can suppress bead formation. Coaxial electrospinning produces fibers with higher nominal fiber production rates (g/hr) and with higher nominal LC content in the fiber (wt. LC/wt. polymer assuming all of the solvent evaporates) but larger fiber size distributions as quantified by the coefficient of variation in fiber diameter than blend electrospinning with a single nozzle. Importantly, our proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate that coaxially electrospinning with LC and solvent in the core preserves the thermochromic properties of the LC so that thermochromic fibers are achieved.

Well-ordered polymer nano-fibers with self-cleaning property by disturbing crystallization process.

Project description:Bionic self-cleaning surfaces with well-ordered polymer nano-fibers are firstly fabricated by disturbing crystallization during one-step coating-curing process. Orderly thin (100 nm) and long (5-10 μm) polymer nano-fibers with a certain direction are fabricated by external macroscopic force (F blow) interference introduced by H2 gas flow, leading to superior superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 170° and a water sliding angle (WSA) of 0-1°. In contrast, nano-wires and nano-bridges (1-8 μm in length/10-80 nm in width) are generated by "spinning/stretching" under internal microscopic force (F T) interference due to significant temperature difference in the non-uniform cooling medium. The findings provide a novel theoretical basis for controllable polymer "bionic lotus" surface and will further promote practical application in many engineering fields such as drag-reduction and anti-icing.

Electrospinning of Highly Aligned Fibers for Drug Delivery Applications.

Project description:Electrospinning is a straightforward, cost-effective, and versatile technique for fabrication of polymeric micro/nanofibers with tunable structural properties. Controlling the size, shape, and spatial orientation of the electrospun fibers is crucial for utilization in drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. In this study, for the first time, we systematically investigate the effect of processing parameters, including voltage, syringe needle gauge, angular velocity of rotating wheel, syringe-collector distance, and flow rate on the size and alignment of electrospun PLGA fibers. Optimizing these parameters enabled us to produce highly aligned and monodisperse PLGA fibers (spatial orientation> 99% and coefficient of variation< 0.5). To assess the effect of fiber alignment on the release of encapsulated drugs from these fibers, we incorporated dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory drug, within highly-aligned and randomly-oriented fibers with comparable diameters (~0.87 μm) and compared their release profiles. In-vitro release studies revealed that the aligned fibers had less burst release (~10.8% in 24 hr) and more sustained release (~8.8% average rate of change for 24 days) compared to the random fibers. Finally, the degradation modes of the aligned and random fibers after 25 days incubation were characterized and compared. The findings of this study can be applied for the development of 3D degradable aligned fibers for controlled drug release and tissue engineering applications.

Significant Electromechanical Characteristic Enhancement of Coaxial Electrospinning Core-Shell Fibers.

Project description:Electrospinning is a low-cost and straightforward method for producing various types of polymers in micro/nanofiber form. Among the various types of polymers, electrospun piezoelectric polymers have many potential applications. In this study, a new type of functional microfiber composed of poly(γ-benzyl-α,L-glutamate) (PBLG) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with significantly enhanced electromechanical properties has been reported. Recently reported electrospun PBLG fibers exhibit polarity along the axial direction, while electrospun PVDF fibers have the highest net dipole moment in the transverse direction. Hence, a combination of PBLG and PVDF as a core-shell structure has been investigated in the present work. On polarization under a high voltage, enhancement in the net dipole moment in each material and the intramolecular conformation was observed. The piezoelectric coefficient of the electrospun PBLG/PVDF core-shell fibers was measured to be up to 68 pC N-1 (d33), and the voltage generation under longitudinal extension was 400 mVpp (peak-to-peak) at a frequency of 60 Hz, which is better than that of the electrospun homopolymer fibers. Such new types of functional materials can be used in various applications, such as sensors, actuators, smart materials, implantable biosensors, biomedical engineering devices, and energy harvesting devices.

Processability of Thermoelectric Ultrafine Fibers via Electrospinning for Wearable Electronics.

Project description:Polymer-based thermoelectric generators hold great appeal in the realm of wearable electronics as they enable the utilization of body heat for power generation. Fibers produced from conducting polymers for use in thermoelectric generators have high porosity and good flexibility, providing comfort-based performance advantages over thin films for wearable electronics. Some fiber processing techniques have been explored to produce textile-based thermoelectric generators; however, they fail to approach the conductivities of polymeric thin films. Ultrafine fibers solution processed through electrospinning yield fiber diameters on the nanoscale, allowing for high surface area to volume ratios and thus low thermal conductivity; however, a number of processing challenges in electrospinning conducting polymers limit the success of preparing high performing thermoelectric textiles. In this work, the specific processing challenges inherent to electrospinning conducting polymers are addressed for both n- and p-type materials. For the p-type polymer, 63 wt % PEDOT:PSS fibers are fabricated through solution formulation improvements yielding a conductivity of 3 S/cm and a power factor of 0.1 μW/mK2. The first of their kind n-type poly(NiETT)/PVA electrospun fibers were created yielding a conductivity of 0.11 S/cm and a power factor of 0.0036 μW/mK2. These nonwoven ultrafine fiber mats show progress toward achieving textile-based thermoelectric materials with equivalent performance of comparable polymeric thin films. This work shows the feasibility of creating ultrafine fibers for use in thermoelectric generators through electrospinning including the first demonstration of poly(NiETT)/PVA fibers.

Bubble Melt Electrospinning for Production of Polymer Microfibers.

Project description:In this paper, we report an interesting bubble melt electrospinning (e-spinning) to produce polymer microfibers. Usually, melt e-spinning for fabricating ultrafine fibers needs "Taylor cone", which is formed on the tip of the spinneret. The spinneret is also the bottleneck for mass production in melt e-spinning. In this work, a metal needle-free method was tried in the melt e-spinning process. The "Taylor cone" was formed on the surface of the broken polymer melt bubble, which was produced by an airflow. With the applied voltage ranging from 18 to 25 kV, the heating temperature was about 210⁻250 °C, and polyurethane (TPU) and polylactic acid (PLA) microfibers were successfully fabricated by this new melt e-spinning technique. During the melt e-spinning process, polymer melt jets ejected from the burst bubbles could be observed with a high-speed camera. Then, polymer microfibers could be obtained on the grounded collector. The fiber diameter ranged from 45 down to 5 μm. The results indicate that bubble melt e-spinning may be a promising method for needleless production in melt e-spinning.
