Mobile Money and Economic Activity: Evidence from Kenya★.

ABSTRACT: This paper estimates the impact of access to mobile money services on local economic activity. The analysis combines data from the early expansion of the mobile agent network in Kenya with a local-level measure of economic performance proxied by the intensity of nighttime lights. Leveraging the variation in areas that gained access to mobile money services at different times and the high resolution of the data, the paper shows that access to mobile money services increased local economic activity and that these effects increased over time. The positive effects are more pronounced for areas that were initially more affluent, urban, and better connected to infrastructure. These results suggest that mobile money can complement, rather than just substitute for, other alternatives that enable people to connect, trade, and allocate investments within their networks.

Effects of Mobile Money Education on Mobile Money Usage: Evidence from Ghana.

Project description:This study conducts a randomised control trial to offer a technical workshop and examine whether providing information about the full range of services on the mobile money platform would increase mobile money usage, by taking a case of the Ashanti Region, Ghana. We find a significant positive impact of mobile money education on the recent usage of mobile money for transactions. However, no significant evidence of the workshop was found on new mobile money account ownership, or on the share of transactions transmitted through mobile money. Furthermore, weak and volatile outcomes were observed as impacts on remittances after the interventions. Mobile money, smallholder farmers, and household welfare in Kenya.

Project description:The use of mobile phones has increased rapidly in many developing countries, including in rural areas. Besides reducing the costs of communication and improving access to information, mobile phones are an enabling technology for other innovations. One important example are mobile phone based money transfers, which could be very relevant for the rural poor, who are often underserved by the formal banking system. We analyze impacts of mobile money technology on the welfare of smallholder farm households in Kenya. Using panel survey data and regression models we show that mobile money use has a positive impact on household income. One important pathway is through remittances received from relatives and friends. Such remittances contribute to income directly, but they also help to reduce risk and liquidity constraints, thus promoting agricultural commercialization. Mobile money users apply more purchased farm inputs, market a larger proportion of their output, and have higher profits than non-users of this technology. These results suggest that mobile money can help to overcome some of the important smallholder market access constraints that obstruct rural development and poverty reduction.

Economic evaluation of mobile phone text message interventions to improve adherence to HIV therapy in Kenya.

Project description:BackgroundA surge in mobile phone availability has fueled low cost short messaging service (SMS) adherence interventions. Multiple systematic reviews have concluded that some SMS-based interventions are effective at improving antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, and they are hypothesized to improve retention in care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of SMS-based adherence interventions and explore the added value of retention benefits.MethodsWe evaluated the cost-effectiveness of weekly SMS interventions compared to standard care among HIV+ individuals initiating ART for the first time in Kenya. We used an individual level micro-simulation model populated with data from two SMS-intervention trials, an East-African HIV+ cohort and published literature. We estimated average quality adjusted life years (QALY) and lifetime HIV-related costs from a healthcare perspective. We explored a wide range of scenarios and assumptions in one-way and multivariate sensitivity analyses.ResultsWe found that SMS-based adherence interventions were cost-effective by WHO standards, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $1,037/QALY. In the secondary analysis, potential retention benefits improved the cost-effectiveness of SMS intervention (ICER = $864/QALY). In multivariate sensitivity analyses, the interventions remained cost-effective in most analyses, but the ICER was highly sensitive to intervention costs, effectiveness and average cohort CD4 count at ART initiation. SMS interventions remained cost-effective in a test and treat scenario where individuals were assumed to initiate ART upon HIV detection.ConclusionsEffective SMS interventions would likely increase the efficiency of ART programs by improving HIV treatment outcomes at relatively low costs, and they could facilitate achievement of the UNAIDS goal of 90% viral suppression among those on ART by 2020.

Symptom experience of limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis from the Patients' perspective: A qualitative study✰,✰✰,★,★★.

Project description:ObjectivesLimited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) is the largest subgroup of people with SSc, but little is known about symptom experience from the patients' perspective. This study aimed to comprehensively identify domains and symptoms reported as bothersome by patients with lcSSc and to analyze themes and sub-themes capturing symptom experience in this population.MethodsFocus groups of patients with lcSSc were conducted using a structured guide. Patients were recruited based on an a priori purposive framework to include men and women with SSc. Focus groups were recorded, transcribed, anonymized, and analyzed using the RADaR technique (rigorous and accelerated data reduction) combined with iterative, deductive and inductive approaches.ResultsFour 2-hour Focus groups comprising participants with lcSSc were conducted (N = 26). Ninety-four symptoms were identified with 22 domains. Symptoms from the following domains were mentioned in all Focus groups: skin, musculoskeletal (MSK), cardiac, pulmonary, gastro-intestinal (GI) manifestations, fatigue, sleep, Raynaud's phenomenon (RP), pain, and digital ulcers. The three most cited domains in a pre-meeting survey were GI, RP and MSK. Seven themes defining symptom experience were identified: difficulty attributing symptoms to this complex systemic disease, influence of symptom temporality, impairment of emotional well-being, limitations in functioning (including several sub-themes of functioning), survival, symptoms management and uncertainty.ConclusionThis study comprehensively identified domains and symptoms considered bothersome from the perspective of patients with lcSSc and summarized patient experience of lcSSc-related symptoms. This study is the first step in the design of a future combined response index dedicated to lcSSc that could foster specific research on this subpopulation of patients.

High-velocity hot CO emission close to Sgr A*: Herschel/HIFI★,★★ submillimeter spectral survey toward Sgr A.

Project description:The properties of molecular gas, the fuel that forms stars, inside the cavity of the circumnuclear disk (CND) are not well constrained. We present results of a velocity-resolved submillimeter scan (~480 to 1250 GHz) and [C ii] 158 μm line observations carried out with Herschel/HIFI toward Sgr A*; these results are complemented by a ~2'×2' 12CO (J=3-2) map taken with the IRAM 30 m telescope at ~7″ resolution. We report the presence of high positive-velocity emission (up to about +300 km s-1) detected in the wings of 12CO J=5-4 to 10-9 lines. This wing component is also seen in H2O (11,0-10,1), a tracer of hot molecular gas; in [C ii]158 μm, an unambiguous tracer of UV radiation; but not in [C i] 492, 806 GHz. This first measurement of the high-velocity 12CO rotational ladder toward Sgr A* adds more evidence that hot molecular gas exists inside the cavity of the CND, relatively close to the supermassive black hole (< 1 pc). Observed by ALMA, this velocity range appears as a collection of 12CO (J=3-2) cloudlets lying in a very harsh environment that is pervaded by intense UV radiation fields, shocks, and affected by strong gravitational shears. We constrain the physical conditions of the high positive-velocity CO gas component by comparing with non-LTE excitation and radiative transfer models. We infer Tk≃400 K to 2000 K for nH≃(0.2-1.0)·105 cm-3. These results point toward the important role of stellar UV radiation, but we show that radiative heating alone cannot explain the excitation of this ~10-60 M⊙ component of hot molecular gas inside the central cavity. Instead, strongly irradiated shocks are promising candidates.

Beyond money: Risk preferences across both economic and non-economic contexts predict financial decisions.

Project description:Important decisions about risk occur in wide-ranging contexts, from investing to healthcare. While an underlying, domain-general risk attitude has been identified across contexts, it remains unclear what role it plays in shaping behavior relative to more domain-specific risk attitudes. Clarifying the relationship between domain-general and domain-specific risk attitudes would inform decision-making theories and the construction of decision aids. The present research assessed the relative contribution of domain-general and domain-specific risk attitudes to financial risk taking. We examined risk attitudes across different decision domains, as revealed through a well-validated measure, the Domain-Specific Risk-Taking Scale (DOSPERT). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that a domain-general risk attitude shaped responses across multiple domains, and structural equation modeling showed that this domain-general risk attitude predicted observed behavioral risk premiums in a financial decision-making task better than domain-specific financial risk attitudes. Thus, assessments of risk attitudes that include both economic and non-economic domains improve predictions of financial risk taking due to the enhanced insight they provide into underlying, domain-general risk preferences.

Linking mobile money networks to "e-ROSCAs": An experimental study.

Project description:We present results from a study in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that uses mobile money networks to run rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs), peer-to-peer finance groups ubiquitous across the developing world. We find high rates of contribution and ROSCA success. The unexpected success of such e-ROSCAs and their potential to extend banking to the bankless poor necessitate further exploration.

Spatially resolved images of reactive ions in the Orion Bar,★★.

Project description:We report high angular resolution (4.9″×3.0″) images of reactive ions SH+, HOC+, and SO+ toward the Orion Bar photodissociation region (PDR). We used ALMA-ACA to map several rotational lines at 0.8 mm, complemented with multi-line observations obtained with the IRAM 30 m telescope. The SH+ and HOC+ emission is restricted to a narrow layer of 2″- to 10″-width (≈800 to 4000 AU depending on the assumed PDR geometry) that follows the vibrationally excited [Formula: see text] emission. Both ions efficiently form very close to the H/H2 transition zone, at a depth of Av≲1 mag into the neutral cloud, where abundant C+, S+, and [Formula: see text] coexist. SO+ peaks slightly deeper into the cloud. The observed ions have low rotational temperatures (Trot≈10-30 K≪Tk) and narrow line-widths (~2-3 km s-1), a factor of ≃2 narrower that those of the lighter reactive ion CH+. This is consistent with the higher reactivity and faster radiative pumping rates of CH+ compared to the heavier ions, which are driven relatively faster toward smaller velocity dispersion by elastic collisions and toward lower Trot by inelastic collisions. We estimate column densities and average physical conditions from an excitation model (n(H2)≈105-106 cm-3, n(e-)≈10 cm-3, and Tk≈200 K). Regardless of the excitation details, SH+ and HOC+ clearly trace the most exposed layers of the UV-irradiated molecular cloud surface, whereas SO+ arises from slightly more shielded layers.

Hippocampus and cognitive domain deficits in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: A comparison with matched treatment-responsive patients and healthy controls✰,✰✰,★,★★.

Project description:Some patients with schizophrenia do not respond to pharmacotherapy. More severe cognitive dysfunctions have been associated with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). This study examines cognitive functions and hippocampal volumes in 43 patients with TRS and compared them to 43 treatment-responsive patients (NTRS), matched on age, sex and education, as well as 53 healthy controls (HC). The results showed that there were significant deficits in all domains of cognition and hippocampal volumes in TRS as compared to HC group. However, TRS specific deficits, as indicated by comparisons with matched NTRS, were limited to poorer performance in working memory (p = 0.003) and smaller total hippocampal volume (p = 0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that working memory deficits [OR 0.94 (95% CI 0.89-0.98), p = 0.005] and smaller hippocampal volume [OR 0.89 (95% CI 0.81-0.97), p = 0.01], but not their interactions (p = 0.68), contributed to higher risk of treatment resistance. The findings suggest that treatment-resistance to currently available antipsychotic medications may not be due to global cognitive deficits in these patients, but be associated with specific deficits in working memory and hippocampus deficits in the subgroup of schizophrenia.
