Regulated and unregulated emissions from Euro VI Diesel and CNG heavy-duty vehicles.

ABSTRACT: This study compares emissions from Euro VI-D Diesel and CNG buses across temperatures from -7 °C to 35 °C. Pollutants including NOx, THC, CH₄, CO, NH₃, N₂O, HCHO, Solid Particle Number larger than 23 nm (SPN23) and larger than 10 nm (SPN10) were measured. Both buses complied with Euro VI-D but exceeded European Commission's proposed Euro 7 limits, notably for NOx and SPN10. The CNG bus also surpassed NH₃, CO, and CH₄ limits, while the Diesel exceeded N₂O limits. High NH₃ emissions were observed from CNG (up to 0.320 g/kWh), with Diesel reporting lower levels (up to 0.021 g/kWh). HCHO emission from both vehicles were very low. SPN23 was under limits, but SPN10 exceeded Euro 7 limits at cold start tests. CNG's CH₄ and N₂O emissions constituted up to 4.6% and 3.5% of CO₂ equivalent, respectively. Diesel bus showed negligible CH₄ but N₂O emissions represented up to 37% of CO₂ equivalent.

Project description:The current experimental study presents particulate emissions from 30 Euro 1-4 L-category vehicles (i.e. 2-, 3- and 4-wheelers such as mopeds, motorcycles, quads and minicars, registered in Europe between 2009 and 2016) tested on a chassis dynamometer. The objectives were to identify those sub-categories with high emissions, to assess whether the measures prescribed in the Euro 5 legislation will effectively control particulate emissions and finally to investigate the need for additional measures. The results showed that 2-stroke (2S) mopeds and diesel minicars comprised the vehicles with the highest particulate mass (PM) and solid particle number above 23 nm (SPN23) emissions (up to 64 mg/km and 4.5 × 1013 km-1, respectively). It is uncertain whether the installation of diesel particulate filters (DPF) is a cost-effective measure for diesel mini-cars in order to comply with Euro 5 standard, while advanced emission controls will be required for 2S mopeds, if such vehicles remain competitive for Euro 5. Regarding 4-stroke mopeds, motorcycles and quads, PM emissions were one order of magnitude lower than 2S ones and already below the Euro 5 limit. Nevertheless, SPN23 emissions from these sub-categories were up to 5 times higher than the Euro 6 passenger cars limit (6 × 1011 km-1). Even recent Euro 4 motorcycles exceeded this limit by up to 3 times. These results indicate that L-category vehicles are a significant contributor to vehicular particulate emissions and should be further monitored during and after the introduction of the Euro 5 step. Moreover, including SPN in the range 10-23 nm increases emission levels by up to 2.4 times compared to SPN23, while volatile and semi-volatile particle numbers were even higher. Finally, cold engine operation was found to be a significant contributor on SPN23 emissions, especially for vehicles with lower overall emission levels. These results indicate that a specific particle number limit may be required for L-category to align emissions with passenger cars.

Project description:Biodiesel is regarded by many as a "greener" alternative fuel to petroleum diesel with potentially lower health risk. However, recent studies examining biodiesel particulate matter (PM) characteristics and health effects are contradictive, and typically utilize PM generated by passenger car engines in laboratory settings. There is a critical need to analyze diesel and biodiesel PM generated in a "real-world" setting where heavy duty-diesel (HDD) engines and commercially purchased fuel are utilized. This study compares the mass concentrations, chemical composition and cytotoxicity of real-world PM from combustion of both petroleum diesel and a waste grease 20% biodiesel blend (B20) at a community recycling center operating HDD nonroad equipment. PM was analyzed for metals, elemental/organic carbon (EC/OC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs). Cytotoxicity in a human lung epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) following 24h exposure to the real-world particles was also evaluated. On average, higher concentrations for both EC and OC were measured in diesel PM. B20 PM contained significantly higher levels of Cu and Mo whereas diesel PM contained significantly higher concentrations of Pb. Principal component analysis determined Mo, Cu, and Ni were the metals with the greatest loading factor, suggesting a unique pattern related to the B20 fuel source. Total PAH concentration during diesel fuel use was 1.9 times higher than during B20 operations; however, total N-PAH concentration was 3.3 times higher during B20 use. Diesel PM cytotoxicity was 8.5 times higher than B20 PM (p<0.05) in a BEAS-2B cell line. This study contributes novel data on real-world, nonroad engine sources of metals, PAH and N-PAH species, comparing tailpipe PM vs. PM collected inside the equipment cabin. Results suggest PM generated from burning petroleum diesel in nonroad engines may be more harmful to human health, but the links between exposure, composition and toxicity are not straightforward.

Project description:The characterization of vehicle exhaust emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential to estimate their impact on the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and, more generally, air quality. This paper revises and updates non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) tailpipe emissions of three Euro 5 vehicles during Artemis cold urban (CU) and motorway (MW) cycles. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis is carried out for the first time on proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) datasets of vehicular emission. Statistical analysis helped to associate the emitted VOCs to specific driving conditions, such as the start of the vehicles, the activation of the catalysts, or to specific engine combustion regimes. Merged PTR-ToF-MS and automated thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometer (ATD-GC-MS) datasets provided an exhaustive description of the NMVOC emission factors (EFs) of the vehicles, thus helping to identify and quantify up to 147 individual compounds. In general, emissions during the CU cycle exceed those during the MW cycle. The gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicle exhibits the highest EF during both CU and MW cycles (252 and 15 mg/km), followed by the port-fuel injection (PFI) vehicle (24 and 0.4 mg/km), and finally the diesel vehicle (15 and 3 mg/km). For all vehicles, emissions are dominated by unburnt fuel and incomplete combustion products. Diesel emissions are mostly represented by oxygenated compounds (65%) and aliphatic hydrocarbons (23%) up to C22, while GDI and PFI exhaust emissions are composed of monoaromatics (68%) and alkanes (15%). Intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) range from 2.7 to 13% of the emissions, comprising essentially linear alkanes for the diesel vehicle, while naphthalene accounts up to 42% of the IVOC fraction for the gasoline vehicles. This work demonstrates that PMF analysis of PTR-ToF-MS datasets and GC-MS analysis of vehicular emissions provide a revised and deep characterization of vehicular emissions to enrich current emission inventories.

Project description:This study investigated the cost competitiveness, using total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis, of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in heavy duty on and off-road fleet applications as a key enabler in the decarbonisation of the transport sector and compares results to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and diesel internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Assessments were carried out for a present day (2021) scenario, and a sensitivity analysis assesses the impact of changing input parameters on FCEV TCO. This identified conditions under which FCEVs become competitive. A future outlook is also carried out examining the impact of time-sensitive parameters on TCO, when net zero targets are to be reached in the UK and EU. Several FCEVs are cost competitive with ICEVs in 2021, but not BEVs, under base case conditions. However, FCEVs do have potential to become competitive with BEVs under specific conditions favouring hydrogen, including the application of purchase grants and a reduced hydrogen price. By 2050, a number of FCEVs running on several hydrogen scenarios show a TCO lower than ICEVs and BEVs using rapid chargers, but for the majority of vehicles considered, BEVs remain the lowest in cost, unless specific FCEV incentives are implemented. This paper has identified key factors hindering the deployment of hydrogen and conducted comprehensive TCO analysis in heavy duty on and off-road fleet applications. The output has direct contribution to the decarbonisation of the transport sector. Highlights • Several FCEVs are cost competitive with ICEVs under base conditions, but not BEVs.• A fossil tax significantly accelerates the year that FCEVs become competitive with ICEVs.• A high purchase grant and a low hydrogen fuel price are key to reducing FCEV TCO.• By 2050, several FCEV scenarios will have a TCO below ICEVs, and even some BEVs.• BEVs incur fewer financial costs than FCEVs but may suffer indirect costs from payload losses and long charging times.
