It has been proposed that adult hematopoiesis is sustained by multipotent progenitors (MPPs) specified during embryogenesis. Adult-like hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) and MPP immunophenotypes are present in the fetus, but knowledge of their functional capacity is incomplete.
