Metarhiziumpuerense (Hypocreales, Clavicipitaceae): a new species from Yunnan, south-western China.

Background

As a genus within the Clavicipitaceae, Metarhizium exhibits rich morphological and ecological diversity, with a wide distribution and a variety of hosts. Currently, sixty-eight species of Metarhizium have been described.

New information

A new species of Metarhizium, M.puerense (Hong Yu bis), was described in Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, south-western China. Based on morphological characteristics and multilocus phylogenetic analyses, Metarhiziumpuerense was confirmed to be phylogenetically related to M.album, but was clearly separated and formed a distinct branch. In contrast, the host of Metarhiziumalbum was plants and leafhoppers and that lepidopteran larvae were the host of M.puerense. The diagnostic features of M.puerense were solitary to multiple stromata and smooth-walled, cylindrical with rounded apices conidia.

Project description:Nectriaceae is a highly diverse family, and members have a worldwide distribution, particularly in warm temperate to tropical regions. During the survey of fungal diversity in different habitats in Yunnan province, China, two new species isolated from soil and air respectively, namely Atractiumyunnanense sp. nov. and Nalanthamalaxishuangbannaensis sp. nov., were proposed based on morphological comparisons and the multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, rpb2, and tub2 sequence data. Phylogenetically, both species clustered in a monophyletic clade within Nectriaceae with strong support. A.yunnanense is characterized by synnematous conidiophores, pale olivaceous-green, clavate to oblong-ellipsoidal, multi-septate conidia, and pale olivaceous-green chlamydospores. N.xishuangbannaensis has acremonium-like or penicillium-like conidiophores and either obovate or ellipsoidal, cylindrical or fusiform conidia. Full descriptions, illustrations, and a phylogenetic tree showing the phylogenetic position of the two new species were provided.

<i>Hoya pyrifolia</i> (Apocynaceae), a new species from south-western Yunnan, China.

Project description:Hoya pyrifolia, a new species of Apocynaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Results from phylogenetic analyses, based on combined DNA fragments of the nuclear ribosomal external transcribed spacer (ETS), intergeneric transcribed spacer (ITS) and three plastid DNA fragments (matK, psbA-trnH and trnT-trnL), showed that the new species was nested within a clade, including Hoya species distributed in the subtropical foothills of the Himalayas and the Tibet-Sichuan Plateau. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from its close relatives by its pyriform and slightly pubescent leaves, as well as the 4-flowered inflorescences.

Characterisation of Metarhizium majus (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) isolated from the Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Project description:Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are important soil-dwelling entomopathogens, which can be used as biological control agents against pest insects. EPF are capable of causing lethal epizootics in pest insect populations in agroecosystems. During a survey of the orchard soil at an organic farm, different EPF species were collected and identified to species level, using both morphological and molecular techniques. The EPF were trapped from soil samples taken from an apricot orchard. The traps, which were baited in the laboratory, used susceptible host insects, including the last-instar larvae of Galleria mellonella (wax moth larvae) and Tenebrio molitor (mealworm larvae). The potential pathogenicity of the local Metarhizium majus isolate was tested and verified using susceptible laboratory-reared last-instar T. molitor larvae. The identification of the M. majus isolated from South African soil was verified using both morphological and molecular techniques. The occurrence of M. majus in the South African soil environment had not previously been reported.

New entomopathogenic species in the Clavicipitaceae family (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) from the subtropical forests of Fujian, China.

Project description:IntroductionEntomopathogenic fungi play a crucial role in the ecological regulation of insect populations and can be exploited as a resource for pest control, sustainable agriculture, and natural products discovery. These fungi and their infected hosts are sometimes highly coveted as part of traditional medicine practices. Here, we sought to examine the biodiversity of entomogenous fungi in subtropical forests of China.MethodsFungal-infected insect specimens were collected from various sites in Fujian Province, China, and purified isolates were obtained through laboratory cultivation and isolation techniques. Molecular characterization of specific target genomic loci was performed on the fungal isolates, and used for phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods to elucidate their taxonomic relationships. Microscopy was used to describe the morphological features of the isolates.ResultsThrough a comprehensive two-year survey of Fujian Province via multilocus molecular phylogenetic analysis targeting the nrSSU, nrLSU, tef1-α, rpb1, and rpb2 loci of collected specimens, we identified three novel species within the Clavicipitaceae herein described as: Albacillium fuzhouense sp. nov., Conoideocrella gongyashanensis sp. nov. and Neoaraneomyces wuyishanensis sp. nov., as well as the recently recorded, Metarhizium cicadae. Each new species was also distinguished from its closest relatives by unique morphological characteristics.DiscussionThese discoveries enrich our understanding of biodiversity within the Clavicipitaceae family and can contribute to the development of new pest control strategies and natural products discovery.

Four new araneogenous species and a new genus in Hypocreales (Clavicipitaceae, Cordycipitaceae) from the karst region of China.

Project description:The karst region in southwestern China is one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world with rich fungal diversity but under-studied. Four fungal species belonging to Chlorocillium (Clavicipitaceae) and Gamszarella (Cordycipitaceae) were isolated from dead spiders. Morphological comparisons, phylogenetic analyses and a PHI analysis based on multigene datasets support the establishment of these new species viz., Chlorocilliumguizhouense sp. nov., C.vallense sp. nov., Gamszarellasinensis sp. nov., and G.vallensis sp. nov. are introduced. A new genus, Neogamszarella, is proposed to accommodate Gamszarellaantillana, which is phylogenetically distinct from Gamszarella s. str. Our results revealed that further attention needs to be paid to the diversity of araneogenous fungi in the karst regions of southwestern China.

Morphological and Phylogenetic Analyses Reveal Three New Species of Entomopathogenic Fungi Belonging to Clavicipitaceae (Hypocreales, Ascomycota).

Project description:This study aims to report three new species of Conoideocrella and Moelleriella from Yunnan Province, Southwestern China. Species of Conoideocrella and Moelleriella parasitize scale insects (Coccidae and Lecaniidae, Hemiptera) and whiteflies (Aleyrodidae, Hemiptera). Based on the phylogenetic analyses of the three-gene nrLSU, tef-1α, and rpb1, it showed one new record species (Conoideocrella tenuis) and one new species (Conoideocrella fenshuilingensis sp. nov.) in the genus Conoideocrella, and two new species, i.e., Moelleriella longzhuensis sp. nov. and Moelleriella jinuoana sp. nov. in the genus Moelleriella. The three new species were each clustered into separate clades that distinguished themselves from one another. All of them were distinguishable from their allied species based on their morphology. Morphological descriptions, illustrations, and comparisons of the allied taxa of the four species are provided in the present paper. In addition, calculations of intraspecific and interspecific genetic distances were performed for Moelleriella and Conoideocrella.

Project description:A new species of the genus Kurixalus (Anura: Rhacophoridae) is described from western Yunnan, China. Genetically the new species, Kurixalus yangisp. n., is closer to Kurixalus naso than to other known congeners. Morphologically the new species is distinguished from all other known congeners by a combination of the following characters: smaller ratios of head, snout, limbs, IND, and UEW to body size; male body size larger than 30 mm; curved canthus rostralis; weak nuptial pad; brown dorsal color; absence of large dark spots on surface of upper-middle abdomen; presence of vomerine teeth; gold brown iris; single internal vocal sac; serrated dermal fringes along outer edge of limbs; granular throat and chest; rudimentary web between fingers; and presence of supernumerary tubercles and outer metacarpal tubercle.

Mitogenomics, phylogeny and morphology reveal two new entomopathogenic species of <i>Ophiocordyceps</i> (Ophiocordycipitaceae, Hypocreales) from south-western China.

Project description:Ophiocordyceps encompasses over 300 species, demonstrating a wide range of morphological features, hosts and habitats within its species diversity. In this study, two novel species in Ophiocordyceps were revealed parasitising Hepialidae larva buried in soil. Ophiocordycepsalbastroma was morphologically characterised by white stromata, solitary and cylindrical conidiogenous cells and smooth ovoid or ellipsoidal conidia. Ophiocordycepsnigristroma was characterised by woody and dark brown stromata, monophialidic, swollen base and lageniform conidiogenous cells and smooth fusiform or oval conidia. The two new species formed a separate clade, respectively, based on the phylogenetic analyses of a combined dataset including nrSSU, nrLSU, rpb1, rpb2, and tef-1α, as well as a dataset of mitochondrial 14 protein coding genes (PCGs). They were all closely grouped with O.sinensis. The mitochondrial genomes of them were first reported. Their mitogenomes were all typical of circular molecules, with positive AT and GC skew, similar GC content, similar genetic composition, similar codon usage and conservative gene positions. However, the length of the mitogenomes varied. Changes in the length of the genes were the leading cause of changes in the length of mitochondrial genome of Ophiocordyceps. The discovery and identification of new Ophiocordyceps species and analysis their mitochondrial genomes may serve as foundations for phylogeny and diversity research within the genus Ophiocordyceps.

A new species of Phoebe (Lauraceae) from south-western China.

Project description:Here Phoebe hekouensis Bing Liu, W.Y. Jin, L.N. Zhao & Y. Yang from south-eastern Yunnan Province of China is described as new to science. This species is morphologically similar to P. megacalyx H.W. Li in the twigs being robust and brownish tomentose, the ovary densely pubescent and the tepals longer than 1 cm, but differs from the latter species by the leaves being broader, up to 18 cm (vs. 4.5-11.5 cm), the inflorescences shorter, ca. 10-15 cm long (vs. up to 23 cm), the ovary completely and densely pubescent (vs. pubescent only at the apical portion) and the stigma conspicuous (vs. inconspicuous). The new species also resembles P. macrocarpa C.Y. Wu, but differs from the latter by the tepals being longer, 9-13 mm long (vs. ca. 4 mm).

<i>Breyniahiemalis</i> (Phyllanthaceae, Phyllantheae), a new species from Yunnan, south-west China.

Project description:Breyniahiemalis Huan C. Wang & Feng Yang (Phyllanthaceae), of sect. Cryptogynium (Müll.Arg.) Welzen & Pruesapan in subg. Breynia, is described from Yunnan, south-west China. It is known from only a single locality in the valley of the Yuanjiang River, and usually occurs in the understory of the savanna vegetation. It is characterized by its broadly elliptic to orbicular leaf blades, shallowly plate-like calyces of the staminate flowers, ovaries with clearly erose rim and urceolate capsules. Morphological comparisons with similar species are also presented.
