Information behaviours of people with type 2 diabetes in Kuwait: a grounded theory study.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Relative to country-specific epidemiological trends, Kuwait experiences a far greater burden of type 2 diabetes among its population. Information behaviours form a significant component of self-care management for patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, however this remains an understudied aspect of disease management. This study aims to investigate the information behaviours of patients with type 2 diabetes in Kuwait, and characterise the methods employed to manage their disease.

Methods

This qualitative study employed a grounded theory method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty-seven participants over three phases of data collection in primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare settings across Kuwait. These were complemented by in-depth interviews to detail the information behaviours of these participants. The interviews were translated where appropriate, transcripts, and analysed through qualitative coding to synthesise the information behaviour patterns.

Results

The findings demonstrated that living with type 2 diabetes involved a range of developmental and transformative stages, including changes to the patients' emotional state, reconstruction of their lifestyle and identity, and changes in the ways they find and use information. Living with the chronic condition was viewed as a dynamic and transitional process, where patients' information behaviours continually changed throughout the process across various identifiable stages. This dynamic pattern was reflected most prominently across the participants' behavioural needs, sources and information-seeking patterns.

Conclusion

Patients with type 2 diabetes continuously adapted their information behaviours to optimise the self-management of their condition across a relatively predictable pattern. Greater understanding of these behaviours across a wider population would improve the provision of clinical care for patients with diabetes.

Project description:BackgroundAlthough Internet has become the main way of access to health and medical information for most young people today, it might not be the case with older people. The elderly that have difficulty using the Internet rely largely on their family members to obtain and evaluate online health and medical information.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to investigate medical students' proxy health information seeking behavior for their family members, and to look into how they search, evaluate, and even apply health information from the Internet. The paper is going to explore the influencing factors of health information seeking behavior of medical students as well as the concerns and difficulties they might encounter during the searching process.MethodsBased on grounded theory, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 medical students, from whom data were collected for analysis. Through the procedure of three-level coding, the theoretical framework of medical students' proxy online health information seeking behavior was constructed.ResultsFindings of this study include the factors influencing medical student' proxy online health information seeking, the emotional attitudes of the interviewees, and the results of proxy information seeking behavior. Students' individual traits, information itself and the search platform all exercise influences on their seeking behavior. Interviewees mainly stay doubtful about the authenticity of health information and feel concerned over their parents' physical conditions. Proxy seeking results are generally marked by positive feedback and negative feedback.ConclusionsIt satisfies the family members' demand for health information that medical students seek online health information for them, and such behavior has a positive impact on the family members' physical condition. Still, to evaluate the quality of health information from the Internet remains a major challenge that medical students face. Only through the joint efforts of both medical students and the related departments could high quality health information be obtained. Besides, for effective delivery of health information, medical students should also stay patient while communicating with their family members.

Project description:BackgroundIndividuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are traditionally perceived as lean, but recent evidence suggests an increasing trend of obesity. To provide global estimates, this study explored the prevalence of obesity among adults with and without T1D across three distinct global regions.MethodsAn observational, cross-sectional study was performed utilizing data from T1D registries and national health surveys to assess the prevalence of obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and the prevalence of overweight and obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) across Belgium, Kuwait, and Mexico. Demographic and clinical characteristics of adults with and without T1D were assessed. Prevalence estimates were calculated through a binomial generalized linear mixed-effects model adjusting for age, sex, HbA1c, and survey year. As a sensitivity analysis, propensity score matching was performed for confounder adjustment of age and sex.FindingsThe study encompassed 3594 individuals with T1D (from 2003 to 2022) and 9898 without T1D (from 2014 to 2021). After model adjustment for confounders (age, sex, HbA1c% and data-collection year), individual obesity prevalence was lower in individuals with T1D in Kuwait and Mexico than among those without type 1 diabetes (Kuwait: 22% (CI: 18-26%) vs. 44% (CI: 41-48%); Mexico: 5% (CI: 3-7%) vs. 40% (CI: 38-42%)). In contrast, individuals with T1D in Belgium showed a more comparable proportions to those without T1D (12% (CI: 9-16%) vs. 16% (CI:11-22%)).InterpretationOur data reveal that obesity is prevalent among people with T1D.
