Project description:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a gaseous air pollutant linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and environmental problems such as acid rain and tropospheric ozone formation. Reference instruments for measuring NO2 are expensive, highlighting the need to develop low cost sensor technologies for wider scale monitoring of this critical pollutant. Here, we report the development of a scalable sensor using electrochemically exfoliated 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) networks. The sensor can detect a wide range of NO2 concentrations at room temperature, with an experimental limit of detection (LOD) as low as 150 ppb and a theoretical LOD of 1.9 parts per quadrillion (ppq) in dry air. The sensor exhibited approximately 90% response to 1 ppm of NO2 within 10 min of exposure. UV irradiation significantly enhanced the sensor's recovery time, reducing it from 20 min to less than 2 min. Evaluation of the sensor within a large (∼6.5 m3) atmospheric simulation chamber yielded a similar response and recovery time performance, opening the opportunity for further tests in the chamber under various conditions. Finally, using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we identified key atomic-scale structures and processes highlighting the importance of electrochemically exfoliated sulfur-deficient MoS2 for sensitive room temperature NO2 detection.

Project description:Musculoskeletal pain is a major health issue which results from surgical procedures (i.e. total knee and/or hip replacements and rotator cuff repairs), as well as from non-surgical conditions (i.e. sympathetically-mediated pain syndrome and occipital neuralgia). Local anesthetics, opioids or corticosteroids are currently used for the pain management of musculoskeletal conditions. Even though local anesthetics are highly preferred, the need for multiple administration presents significant disadvantages. Development of unique delivery systems that can deliver local anesthetics at the injection site for prolonged time could significantly enhance the therapeutic efficacy and patient comfort. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the efficacy of an injectable local anesthetic nanocomposite carrier to provide sustained analgesic effect. The nanocomposite carrier was developed by encapsulating ropivacaine, a local anesthetic, in lipid nanocapsules (LNC-Rop), and incorporating the nanocapsules in enzymatically crosslinked glycol chitosan (0.3GC) hydrogels. Cryo Scanning Electron Microscopic (Cryo SEM) images showed the ability to distribute the LNCs within the hydrogel without adversely affecting their morphology. The study demonstrated the feasibility to achieve sustained release of lipophilic molecules from the nanocomposite carrier in vitro and in vivo. A rat chronic constriction injury (CCI) pain model was used to evaluate the efficacy of the nanocomposite carrier using thermal paw withdrawal latency (TWL). The nanocomposite carriers loaded with ropivacaine and dexamethasone showed significant improvement in pain response compared to the control groups for at least 7 days. The study demonstrated the clinical potential of these nanocomposite carriers for post-operative and neuropathic pain.Statement of significanceAcute or chronic pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions is considered a major health issue, with healthcare costs totaling several billion dollars. The opioid crisis presents a pressing clinical need to develop alternative and effective approaches to treat musculoskeletal pain. The goal of this study was to develop a long-acting injectable anesthetic formulation which can sustain a local anesthetic effect for a prolonged time. This in turn could increase the quality of life and rehabilitation outcome of patients, and decrease opioid consumption. The developed injectable nanocomposite demonstrated the feasibility to achieve prolonged pain relief in a rat chronic constriction injury (CCI) model.

Project description:We herein report a novel chiral magnetic molybdenum disulfide nanocomposite (MMoS2/PNG-CD) with a high enantioselectivity and excellent thermosensitivity and magnetism. The prepared MMoS2/PNG-CD shows temperature-dependent chiral discrimination and enantioselectivity toward a chiral drug RS-propranolol (RS-PPL), which is based on the molecular recognition ability of beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and the thermosensitivity of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The synthesized MMoS2/PNG2-CD by using a monomer molar ratio of GMA to NIPAM of 2 : 1 demonstrates a high selectivity toward R-PPL over S-PPL due to the synergistic effect of the PNIPAM moieties and β-CD hosts. The thermo-induced volume phase transition (VPT) of the introduced PNIPAM moieties significantly affects the inclusion constants of the β-CD/R-PPL complex, and thus the loading and desorption of R-PPL on the MMoS2/PNG2-CD. The enantioselectivity at temperatures below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNG-β-CD grafting chains is much higher than that at temperatures above the LCST. As a result, the regeneration of the MMoS2/PNG2-CD is easily achieved via simply changing the operating temperature. Moreover, the regenerated MMoS2/PNG2-CD can be readily recovered from the RS-PPL solution under an external magnetic field for reuse. Such a multifunctional molybdenum disulfide nanocomposite with a high enantioselectivity and excellent thermosensitivity and regenerability is promising to serve as a high-performance nanoselector for direct resolution of various β-blocker drugs.

Project description:An electrochemical DNA sensor that can detect human papillomavirus (HPV)-16 and HPV-18 for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer was developed by using a graphitic nano-onion/molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet composite. The electrode surface for probing DNA chemisorption was prepared via chemical conjugation between acyl bonds on the surfaces of functionalized nanoonions and the amine groups on functionalized MoS2 nanosheets. The cyclic voltammetry profile of an 1:1 nanoonion/MoS2 nanosheet composite electrode had an improved rectangular shape compared to that of an MoS2 nanosheet elecrode, thereby indicating the amorphous nature of the nano-onions with sp2 distancing curved carbon layers that provide enhanced electronic conductivity, compared to MoS2 nanosheet only. The nanoonion/MoS2 sensor for the DNA detection of HPV-16 and HPV-18, respectively, was measured at high sensitivity through differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in the presence of methylene blue (MB) as a redox indicator. The DPV current peak was lowered after probe DNA chemisorption and target DNA hybridization because the hybridized DNA induced less effective MB electrostatic intercalation due to it being double-stranded, resulting in a lower oxidation peak. The nanoonion/MoS2 nanosheet composite electrodes attained higher current peaks than the MoS2 nanosheet electrode, thereby indicating a greater change in the differential peak probably because the nanoonions enhanced conductive electron transfer. Notably, both of the target DNAs produced from HPV-18 and HPV-16 Siha and Hela cancer cell lines were effectively detected with high specificity. The conductivity of MoS2 improved by complexation with nano-onions provides a suitable platform for electrochemical biosensors for the early diagnosis of many ailments in humans.

Project description:A solvent-free, low-cost, high-yield and scalable single-step ball milling process is developed to construct 2D MoS2/graphene hybrid electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. Electron microscopy investigation reveals that the obtained hybrid electrodes consist of numerous nanosheets of MoS2 and graphene which are randomly distributed. The MoS2/graphene hybrid anodes exhibit excellent cycling stability with high reversible capacities (442 mA h g-1 for MoS2/graphene (40 h); 553 mA h g-1 for MoS2/graphene (20 h); 342 mA h g-1 for MoS2/graphene (10 h)) at a high current rate of 250 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, whereas the pristine MoS2 electrode shows huge capacity fading with a retention of 37 mA h g-1 at 250 mA g-1 current after 100 cycles. The incorporation of graphene into MoS2 has an extraordinary effect on its electrochemical performance. This work emphasises the importance of the construction of the 2D MoS2/graphene hybrid structure to prevent capacity fading issues with the MoS2 anode in lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:A ternary nanocomposite of plasticized starch (PS), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was prepared via a solution casting process, with MoS2 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 1.00 wt%. The structural, surface morphological, optical, and electrochemical properties of the nanocomposites were studied. FTIR analysis reveals the formation of new chemical bonds between PS, rGO, and MoS2, indicating strong interactions among them. The XRD analysis showed a reduction in the crystallinity of the nanocomposite from 40 to 21% due to the incorporation of nanofiller. FESEM micrograph showed an increment of the surface roughness due to the incorporation of rGO-MoS2 layers. UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated a reduction of optical bandgap from 4.71 to 2.90 eV, resulting from enhanced charge transfer between the layers and defect states due to the addition of nanofillers. The incorporation of MoS2 increase the specific capacitance of the PS from 2.78 to 124.98 F g-1 at a current density of 0.10 mA g-1. The EIS analysis revealed that the nanofiller significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance from 4574 to 0 Ω, facilitating the ion transportation between the layers. The PS/rGO/MoS2 nanocomposite also exhibited excellent stability, retaining about 85% of its capacitance up to 10,000 charging-discharging cycles. These biocompatible polymer-based nanocomposites with improved electrochemical performance synthesized from an easy and economical route may offer a promising direction to fabricate a nature-friendly electrode material for energy storage applications.

Project description:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a crucial signal molecule plays a vital part in the growth and development of various cells under normal physiological conditions. The development of H2O2 sensors has received great research interest because of the importance of H2O2 in biological systems and its practical applications in other fields. In this study, a H2O2 electrochemical sensor was constructed based on chalcogenide molybdenum disulfide-gold-silver nanocomposite (MoS2-Au-Ag). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were utilized to characterize the nanocomposites, and the electrochemical performances of the obtained sensor were assessed by two electrochemical detection methods: cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results showed that the MoS2-Au-Ag-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) has higher sensitivity (405.24 µA mM-1 cm-2), wider linear detection range (0.05-20 mM) and satisfactory repeatability and stability. Moreover, the prepared sensor was able to detect the H2O2 discharge from living tumor cells. Therefore, this study offers a platform for the early diagnosis of cancer and other applications in the fields of biology and biomedicine.

Project description:In the present study, a novel method has been carried out to grow tungsten (W) doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on the graphene transferred TEM grid in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) setup. Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been used as a source for 'W' while 'Mo' has been derived from Mo based substrate. Different experimental parameters were used in this experiment. Higher gas flow rate decreases the size of the sample flake and on other side increases the dopant concentrations. The interaction mechanism between Mo, S, W and oxygen (O) have been explored. The influence of oxygen seems to be not avoidable completely which also imposes effective growth condition for the reaction of Mo with incoming sulfur atoms. The difference in the migration energies of Mo, WO3, S clusters on the graphene and the higher reactivity of Mo clusters over other possibly formed atomic clusters on the graphene leads to the growth of W doped MoS2 monolayers. Formation of MoS2 monolayer and the nature of edge doping of 'W' is explained well with the crystal model using underlying nucleation principles. We believe our result provide a special route to prepare W doped MoS2 on graphene substrate in the future.

Project description:There have been several trials to develop the bioactuator using skeletal muscle cells for controllable biobybird robot. However, due to the weak contraction force of muscle cells, the muscle cells could not be used for practical applications such as biorobotic hand for carrying objects, and actuator of biohybrid robot for toxicity test and drug screening. Based on reported hyaluronic acid-modified gold nanoparticles (HA@GNPs)-embedded muscle bundle on PDMS substrate, in this study for augmented actuation, we developed the electroactive nano-biohybrid actuator composed of the HA@GNP-embedded muscle bundle and molybdenum disulfide nanosheet (MoS2 NS)-modified electrode to enhance the motion performance. The MoS2 NS-modified Au-coated polyimide (PI) electrode to be worked in mild pH condition for viable muscle cell was utilized as supporting- and motion enhancing- substrate since it was electrochemically active, which caused the movement of flexible PI electrode. The motion performance of this electroactive nano-biohybrid actuator by electrical stimulation was increased about 3.18 times compared with that of only HA@GNPs embedded-muscle bundle on bare PI substrate. The proposed electroactive nano-biohybrid actuator can be applied to the biorobotic hand and biohybrid robot.
