Project description:The first hydride-doped Pd/Ag superatoms stabilized by selenolates are reported: [PdHAg19(dsep)12] [dsep = Se2P(OiPr)2] 1 and [PdHAg20(dsep)12]+ 2. 1 was derived from the targeted transformation of [PdHAg19(dtp)12] [dtp = S2P(OiPr)2] by ligand exchange, whereas 2 was obtained from the addition of trifluoroacetic acid to 1, resulting in a symmetric redistribution of the capping silver atoms. The transformations are all achieved while retaining an 8-electron superatomic configuration. VT-NMR attests to the good stability of the NCs in solution, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the crucial role that the interstitial hydride plays in directing the position of the capping silver atoms. The total structures are reported alongside their electronic and optical properties. 1 and 2 are phosphorescent with a lifetime of 73 and 84 μs at 77 K, respectively. The first antibacterial activity data for superatomic bimetallic Pd/Ag nanoclusters are also reported.

This approach is facilitated by an open site in the structure that allows for effective pairing. The assembled structure demonstrates a minimal solvatochromic shift across organic solvents with variable polarities, highlighting the influence of self-assembly on the photophysical properties of silver nanoclusters.

Project description:Atomically precise thiolate-protected coinage metal nanoclusters and their alloys are far more numerous than their selenium congeners, the synthesis of which remains extremely challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of atomically defined dithiophosph(in)ate protected eight-electron superatomic palladium silver nanoalloys [PdAg20{S2PR2}12], 2a-c (where R = OiPr, a; OiBu, b; Ph, c) via ligand exchange and/or co-reduction methods. The ligand exchange reaction on [PdAg20{S2P(OnPr)2}12], 1, with [NH4{Se2PR2}12] (where R = OiPr, or OnPr) leads to the formation of [PdAg20{Se2P(OiPr)2}12] (3) and [PdAg20{Se2P(OnPr)2}12] (4), respectively. Solid state structures of 2a, 2b, 3 and 4 unravel different PdAg20 metal frameworks from their parent cluster, originating from the different distributions of the eight-capping silver(I) atoms around a Pd@Ag12 centered icosahedron with C2, D3, Th and Th symmetries, respectively. Surprisingly ambient temperature crystallization of the reaction product 3 obtained by the ligand exchange reaction on 1 has resulted in the co-crystallization of two isomers in the unit cell with overall T (3a) and C3 (3b) symmetries, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first ever characterized isomeric pair among the selenolate-protected NCs. Density functional theory (DFT) studies further rationalize the preferred geometrical isomerism of the PdAg20 core.

Project description:DNA-stabilized silver nanoclusters (AgN-DNAs) are known to have one or two DNA oligomer ligands per nanocluster. Here, we present the first evidence that AgN-DNA species can possess additional chloride ligands that lead to increased stability in biologically relevant concentrations of chloride. Mass spectrometry of five chromatographically isolated near-infrared (NIR)-emissive AgN-DNA species with previously reported X-ray crystal structures determines their molecular formulas to be (DNA)2[Ag16Cl2]8+. Chloride ligands can be exchanged for bromides, which red-shift the optical spectra of these emitters. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the 6-electron nanocluster show that the two newly identified chloride ligands were previously assigned as low-occupancy silvers by X-ray crystallography. DFT also confirms the stability of chloride in the crystallographic structure, yields qualitative agreement between computed and measured UV-vis absorption spectra, and provides interpretation of the 35Cl-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of (DNA)2[Ag16Cl2]8+. A reanalysis of the X-ray crystal structure confirms that the two previously assigned low-occupancy silvers are, in fact, chlorides, yielding (DNA)2[Ag16Cl2]8+. Using the unusual stability of (DNA)2[Ag16Cl2]8+ in biologically relevant saline solutions as a possible indicator of other chloride-containing AgN-DNAs, we identified an additional AgN-DNA with a chloride ligand by high-throughput screening. Inclusion of chlorides on AgN-DNAs presents a promising new route to expand the diversity of AgN-DNA structure-property relationships and to imbue these emitters with favorable stability for biophotonics applications.

Project description:Ag29 nanoclusters capped with lipoic acid (LA) can be doped with Au. The doped clusters show enhanced stability and increased luminescence efficiency. We attribute the higher quantum yield to an increase in the rate of radiative decay. With mass spectrometry, the Au-doped clusters were found to consist predominantly of Au1Ag28(LA)123-. The clusters were characterized using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Au L3-edge. Both the extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the near edge structure (XANES) in combination with electronic structure calculations confirm that the Au dopant is preferentially located in the center of the cluster. A useful XANES spectrum can be recorded for lower concentrations, or in shorter time, than the more commonly used EXAFS. This makes XANES a valuable tool for structural characterization.

Project description:We investigated an ss-DNA sequence that can stabilize a red- and a green-emissive silver nanocluster (DNA-AgNC). These two emitters can convert between each other in a reversible way. The change from red- to green-emitting DNA-AgNCs can be triggered by the addition of H2O2, while the opposite conversion can be achieved by the addition of NaBH4. Besides demonstrating the switching between red- and green-emissive DNA-AgNCs and determining the recoverability, we fully characterized the photophysical properties, such as steady-state emission, quantum yield, fluorescence lifetime, and anisotropy of the two emissive species. Understanding the mechanism behind the remarkable conversion between the two emitters could lead to the development of a new range of DNA-AgNC-based ratiometric sensors.

Project description:The reactivity of iron nanocluster arrays on h-BN/Rh(111) was studied using in situ high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The morphology and reactivity of the iron nanoclusters (Fe-NCs) were investigated by CO adsorption. On-top and hollow/edge sites were determined to be the available adsorption sites on the as-prepared Fe-NCs and CO dissociation was observed at 300 K. C- and O-precovered Fe-NCs showed no catalytic activity towards CO dissociation because the hollow/edge sites were blocked by the C and O atoms. Therefore, these adsorption sites were identified to be the most active sites of the Fe-NCs.

Project description:We report the synthesis and characterization of a bimetallic conjugate (RhPt) in which an oxaliplatin derivative is tethered to a rhodium metalloinsertor through an aminomalonate leaving group ligand. The complex interacts with DNA through metalloinsertion at a base pair mismatch followed by formation of a covalent Pt-DNA adduct. Characterization of RhPt in mismatch repair-deficient HCT116O cells reveals increased cytotoxicity compared to cisplatin and oxaliplatin as well as relative to the unconjugated rhodium and platinum counterparts. Caspase and poly-ADP ribose polymerase inhibition assays indicate that RhPt induces apoptotic cell death. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) experiments reveal that RhPt exhibits enhanced cellular uptake properties that contribute to its increased efficacy.

Project description:Highly monodispersed Cu-Pt bimetallic nanoclusters were synthesized by a facile synthesis approach. Analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and spherical aberration (C s)-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images shows that the average diameter of the Cu-Pt nanoclusters is 3.0 ± 1.0 nm. The high angle annular dark field (HAADF-STEM) images, intensity profiles, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) line scans, allowed us to study the distribution of Cu and Pt with atomistic resolution, finding that Pt is embedded randomly in the Cu lattice. A novel simulation method is applied to study the growth mechanism, which shows the formation of alloy structures in good agreement with the experimental evidence. The findings give insight into the formation mechanism of the nanosized Cu-Pt bimetallic catalysts.

Project description:As an important kind of emerging heterogeneous catalyst for sustainable chemical processes, supported metal cluster (SMC) catalysts have received great attention for their outstanding activity; however, the easy aggregation of metal clusters due to their migration along the substrate's surface usually deteriorates their activity and even causes catalyst failure during cycling. Herein, stable Pt nanoclusters (NCs, ∼1.06 nm) are homogeneously confined in the uniform spherical mesopores of mesoporous titania (mpTiO2) by the interaction between Pt NCs and metal oxide pore walls made of polycrystalline anatase TiO2. The obtained Pt-mpTiO2 exhibits excellent stability with well-retained CO conversion (∼95.0%) and Pt NCs (∼1.20 nm) in the long term water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. More importantly, the Pt-mpTiO2 displays an unusual increasing activity during the cyclic catalyzing WGS reaction, which was found to stem from the in situ generation of interfacial active sites (Ti3+-Ov-Ptδ+) by the reduction effect of spillover hydrogen generated at the stably supported Pt NCs. The Pt-mpTiO2 catalysts also show superior performance toward the selective hydrogenation of furfural to 2-methylfuran. This work discloses an efficient and robust Pt-mpTiO2 catalyst and systematically elucidates the mechanism underlying its unique catalytic activity, which helps to design stable SMC catalysts with self-enhancing interfacial activity in sustainable heterogeneous catalysis.
