Project description:Hydrogen production via cost-effective electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising approaches to confront the energy crisis and to obtain clean fuels with high energy density. To address this concern, herein, we developed a simple one-step synthesis method for creating an AuAgCu trimetallic alloy using aspirin as a capping agent. This alloy shows potential for efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. The trimetallic nanoparticles based alloy exhibit an equiaxed grain-like morphology and a face-centred cubic phase. In HER experiments using a 1 M KOH electrolyte, the AuAgCu alloy shows nearly negligible overpotential compared to mono- and bimetallic catalysts, and the Tafel slope was 32.7 mV dec-1, which is the lowest ever achieved for alloy-based electrocatalysts and extremely close to a commercially available Pt/C with high stability for 21 days and no decrease in current density in alkaline media. Besides, with excellent HER activity and stability, the trimetallic AuAgCu-modified electrode possessed significant durability for over 1000 cycles in the selected range of potential from 0.5 to 0.8 V at different scan rates from 1 to 100 mV s-1. This simple, cost-effective and environmentally friendly methodology can pave the way for the exploitation of mixed metal alloy-based electrocatalysts not only for water splitting but also for other applications, such as fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

Project description:Phosphides of transition metals (TMPs) are a developing class of materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as an alternative to expensive noble metals to produce clean energy. Herein, the nitrogen-doped molybdenum oxide (MoOx) is developed via a facile and simple hydrothermal method, followed by annealing in the N2 atmosphere and phosphorization to form a nitrogen-doped oxygenated molybdenum phosphide (N-MoP) sphere-shaped structure. The developed N-doped phosphide structure depicts enhanced HER activity by reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a very low overpotential of only 87 mV, which is much better than annealed nitrogen-doped molybdenum oxide (A-MoOx) 138 mV in alkaline medium. N-MoP is a highly efficient electrocatalyst for HER attributed to a more exposed surface, large electrode/electrolyte interface and appropriate binding energies for reactants. This study extends the opportunity of developing nitrogen-doped TMPs, which can display exceptional properties as compared to their oxides.

Project description:Seawater splitting represents an inexpensive and attractive route for producing hydrogen, which does not require a desalination process. Highly active and durable electrocatalysts are required to sustain seawater splitting. Herein we report the phosphidation-based synthesis of a cobalt-iron-phosphate ((Co,Fe)PO4) electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) toward alkaline seawater splitting. (Co,Fe)PO4 demonstrates high HER activity and durability in alkaline natural seawater (1 M KOH + seawater), delivering a current density of 10 mA/cm2 at an overpotential of 137 mV. Furthermore, the measured potential of the electrocatalyst ((Co,Fe)PO4) at a constant current density of -100 mA/cm2 remains very stable without noticeable degradation for 72 h during the continuous operation in alkaline natural seawater, demonstrating its suitability for seawater applications. Furthermore, an alkaline seawater electrolyzer employing the non-precious-metal catalysts demonstrates better performance (1.625 V at 10 mA/cm2) than one employing precious metal ones (1.653 V at 10 mA/cm2). The non-precious-metal-based alkaline seawater electrolyzer exhibits a high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency (12.8%) in a commercial silicon solar cell.

Project description:It is a great challenge to prepare efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution (HER) using non-precious metals. In this study, a series of PtCo/Ti3C2Tx-Y (Y: 16, 32, and 320, Y indicates the quality of Co(NO3)2) catalysts were synthesized by loading PtCo alloy on Ti3C2Tx. The PtCo/Ti3C2Tx-32 catalyst showed the best HER performance, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with low overpotential (36 and 101 mV) and small Tafel slopes (66.37 and 105.17 mV dec-1) in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 and 1 mol L-1 KOH solution. The excellent HER activity of PtCo/Ti3C2Tx-32 can be attributed as follows: Ti3C2Tx has a unique two-dimensional structure, which can provide a large number of attachment sites for the PtCo alloy, hence exposing more active sites; on the other hand, it can also provide a fast and efficient conductive network for electron transport during electrocatalytic processes, thus enhancing the connectivity between electrolyte and catalyst. PtCo alloy makes the PtCo/Ti3C2Tx catalyst more hydrophilic, accelerating the release rate of bubbles. The DFT calculation results showed that the energy barrier of HER is reduced because the charge around Pt is redistributed by Co after alloying Pt and Co, so that the PtCo/Ti3C2Tx catalyst has a suitable ΔGH* value. This study can be expected to provide some references for the design and synthesis of Ti3C2Tx-supported alloy electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for HER.

Project description:The hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have gained significant attention due to their various alluring applications in the fascinating field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic activity of HOFs toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by utilizing the molecular adduct of cyanuric and trithiocyanuric acid with various organic substrates (melamine and 4,4'-bipyridine). Both the experimental and theoretical findings provide insights and validate the electrocatalytic activity toward HER applications. This work contributes significantly to designing novel highly efficient metal-free HOF-based electrocatalysts for the HER.

Project description:Efficient hydrogen production through electrocatalysis represents a promising path for the future clean energy. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a good substitute for platinum-based catalysts, due to its low cost and high activity. However, the limited active sites and low electrical conductivity of MoS2 hinder its large-scale industrial application under alkaline conditions. Herein, we constructed MoS2 nanodots anchored on an MXene/nickel foam (MoS2 NDs/MXene/NF) heterostructure by a cascade polymerization synthesis and in situ vulcanization. The prepared heterostructure displays an ultralow overpotential of 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of only 59 mV dec-1 in alkaline (1 M KOH) hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and is better than conventional MoS2 electrocatalysts reported so far. Fine structural analysis indicates that MoS2 NDs are dispersed uniformly on the surface of the heterostructure with consistent orientation, leading to the improvement of MoS2 conductivity with more paths for electron transfer. Moreover, the orientation of the synthesized MoS2 NDs was verified to expose the more (002) crystal plane, which exhibits higher activity than other planes. Our results demonstrate that MoS2 NDs with heterostructure design and preferential growth can serve as high-efficiency noble-metal free electrocatalysts for the HER in alkaline solution.

Project description:Nickel is regarded as the best alternative metal electrocatalyst to platinum for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Success in developing a quasi-amorphous metallic nickel (QAMN) nanopowder catalyst using a two-step chemical route for efficient and durable HER in alkaline solution is reported. It is found that the QAMN electrocatalyst exhibits essentially zero overpotential at the cathodic onset while delivering 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of only 240 mV; both performances are far better than what was reported previously using prior metallic nickel catalysts. Taking into account increased surface area, further enhanced activity is attributed to the superior intrinsic activity. Meanwhile, the QAMN catalyst shows excellent stability in accelerated and interrupted polarization in alkaline solution for tens of hours. This study provides a new chemical means to prepare amorphous metallic materials for more efficient catalysis.

Project description:Supported metallic nanoparticles render highly tunable physical and chemical properties to mixed-dimensionality materials in electrocatalysts. However, some supports are susceptible to being dissolved in acidic solution or are unstable in ambient air. The development of high-performance catalysts has been facing the major hurdles of the sluggish activity in alkaline solution and requesting high energy to stabilize the nanoparticles on their supports, challenging the pH-universality and the applicability of the supported metallic nanoparticles. Here, a one-step strategy is proposed to modulate the growth of Pt quantum dots (QDs) on HF-free MXene under atomic-level by a low-temperature metal-support interaction reaction. By controllable tailoring in the morphology and strain induced by terminations, Pt (111) QDs with a sub-nanoscale size of 1.15 nm are grown as 0D/1D heterostructure to overcome the restrictions of employing reduction gas and high annealing temperature. The catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 33.3 mV for acidic solution, while 65.1 mV for alkaline solution at a specific current density of 10 mA cm-2 . This study not only paves a scalable pathway to developing cost-efficient catalysts in moderate conditions, but also demonstrates an effective surface modulation strategy for 0D/1D heterostructures.

Project description:Hydrogen evolution reaction is an important process in electrochemical energy technologies. Herein, ruthenium and nitrogen codoped carbon nanowires are prepared as effective hydrogen evolution catalysts. The catalytic performance is markedly better than that of commercial platinum catalyst, with an overpotential of only -12 mV to reach the current density of 10 mV cm-2 in 1 M KOH and -47 mV in 0.1 M KOH. Comparisons with control experiments suggest that the remarkable activity is mainly ascribed to individual ruthenium atoms embedded within the carbon matrix, with minimal contributions from ruthenium nanoparticles. Consistent results are obtained in first-principles calculations, where RuCxNy moieties are found to show a much lower hydrogen binding energy than ruthenium nanoparticles, and a lower kinetic barrier for water dissociation than platinum. Among these, RuC2N2 stands out as the most active catalytic center, where both ruthenium and adjacent carbon atoms are the possible active sites.

Project description:Electrochemical hydrogen evolution is a highly efficient way to produce hydrogen, but since it is limited by high-cost electrocatalysts, the preparation of high-efficiency electrocatalysts with fewer or free noble metals is important. Here, Ta3N5 nanobelt (NB)-loaded Ru nanoparticle (NP) hybrids with various ratios, including 1~10 wt% Ru/Ta3N5, are constructed to electrocatalyze water splitting for a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The results show that 5 wt% Ru/Ta3N5 NBs have good HER properties with an overpotential of 64.6 mV, a Tafel slope of 84.92 mV/dec at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M of KOH solution, and good stability. The overpotential of the HER is lower than that of Pt/C (20 wt%) at current densities of 26.3 mA/cm2 or more. The morphologies and structures of the materials are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, respectively. X-ray photoelectron energy spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrates that a good HER performance is generated by the synergistic effect and electronic transfer of Ru to Ta3N5. Our electrochemical analyses and theoretical calculations indicate that Ru/Ta3N5 interfaces play an important role as real active sites.
