Project description:Dihalogenation of alkenes to the high-added value vicinal dihalides is a prominent process in modern synthetic chemistry. However, their effective conversion still requires the use of expensive and hazardous agents, sacrificial half-reaction coupling or primary energy input. Here, we show a photocatalytically assisted shuttle (p-shuttle) strategy for redox-neutral and reversible vicinal dihalogenation using low-cost and stable 1,2-dihaloethane under visible light illumination. Energetic hot electrons from metal-halide perovskite QDs enable the challenging photocatalytic reactions. Ultrafast laser transient absorption spectroscopy have unveiled the energy matching of the hot electrons with the high reduction potential of 1,2-dihaloethane, via two consecutive photoexcitation process. Powered by the sustainable energy as the only energy input, our new catalytic system using metal-halide perovskite QDs for dibromination, dichlorination and even unexplored hetero-dihalogenation, shows good tolerance with a wide range of alkenes at room temperature. In contrast to homogeneous photocatalysts, chalcogenide QDs and other semiconductor catalysts, perovskite QDs deliver previously unattainable performance in photoredox shuttle vicinal dihalogenation with the turnover number over 120,000. This work provides new opportunities in visible-light-driven heterogeneous catalysis for unlocking novel chemical transformations.

Project description:Benefiting from the high modulation bandwidth (BW), low energy consumption and excellent optical performance, lead halide perovskite has attracted wide attention in visible light communication (VLC). However, the ion migration which results in mobile point defects in perovskite structures is recognized as a crucial key factor inducing the performance degradation. Here, the influence of ion migration in perovskite devices on the performance of VLC was systematically studied. The ion migration process is realized by mixing CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 quantum dots, during which, the performance of the VLC system is reduced, but it can return to its initial state after stabilization. The on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme of the perovskite light-emitting diode (LED) device was carried out, achieving a data rate of 90 Mbps.

Project description:Perovskite materials with tunable electronic and structural characteristics can realize various physical properties including electrical/ionic conduction, ferroelectricity, and luminescence. Integrating and coupling these properties in a single perovskite material offer new possibilities for fundamental research and applications. In particular, coupling ferroelectricity and luminescence would enable novel applications. Here, we report that the metal-free ferroelectric perovskite MDABCO (N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium)-ammonium triiodide exhibits coupled superior ferroelectricity and visible photoluminescence (PL). Besides strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) associated with its ferroelectricity, MDABCO-ammonium triiodide shows long-lifetime PL at room temperature. Remarkably, the PL intensity depends strongly on the polarization of the excitation light. We found that this anisotropy is coupled to the local crystal orientation that was determined by polarization-resolved SHG. Our results suggest that the anisotropic PL property can be tuned in response to its ferroelectric state via an external field and, thereby, presents a previosuly unobserved functionality in perovskites.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite (LHP) based colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have tremendous potential for photocatalysis due to their exceptional optical properties. However, their applicability in catalysis is restricted due to poor chemical stability and low recyclability. We report halide-passivated, monodisperse CsPbBr3CQDs as a stable and efficient visible-light photocatalyst for organic transformations. We demonstrate oxidative aromatization of a wide range of heterocyclic substrates including examples which are poor hydrogen transfer (HAT) reagents. Two to five-fold higher rate kinetics were observed for reactions catalyzed by CsPbBr3CQDs in comparison with bulk-type CsPbBr3 (PNCs) or conventionally synthesized CsPbBr3CQDs and other metal organic dyes (rhodamine 6G and [Ru(bpy)3]2+). Furthermore, these CQDs exhibit improved air-tolerance and photostability and in turn show a higher turnover number (TON) of 200, compared to conventionally prepared CQDs (TON = 166) and state-of-the-art bulk-type perovskite-based catalyst (TON = 177). Our study paves the way for the practical applicability of energy-level tunable, size-controlled LHP CQDs as efficient photocatalysts in organic synthesis.

Project description:Colloidal metal halide perovskite (MHP) nanocrystals (NCs) are an emerging class of fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) for next-generation optoelectronics. A great hurdle hindering practical applications, however, is their high lead content, where most attempts addressing the challenge in the literature compromised the material's optical performance or colloidal stability. Here, we present a postsynthetic approach that stabilizes the lead-reduced MHP NCs through high-entropy alloying. Upon doping the NCs with multiple elements in considerably high concentrations, the resulting high-entropy perovskite (HEP) NCs remain to possess excellent colloidal stability and narrowband emission, with even higher photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields, ηPL, and shorter fluorescence lifetimes, τPL. The formation of multiple phases containing mixed interstitial and doping phases is suggested by X-ray crystallography. Importantly, the crystalline phases with higher degrees of lattice expansion and lattice contraction can be stabilized upon high-entropy alloying. We show that the lead content can be approximately reduced by up to 55% upon high-entropy alloying. The findings reported here make one big step closer to the commercialization of perovskite NCs.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite microlasers have been very promising for versatile optoelectronic applications. However, most perovskite microlasers are linearly polarized with uniform wavefront. The structured laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum have rarely been studied and the applications of perovskites in next-generation optical communications are thus hindered. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate the perovskite vortex microlasers with highly directional outputs and well-controlled topological charges. High quality gratings have been experimentally fabricated in perovskite film and the subsequent vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with divergent angles of 3o are achieved. With the control of Archimedean spiral gratings, the wavefront of the perovskite VCSELs has been switched to be helical with topological charges of q = -4 to 4. This research is able to expand the potential applications of perovskite microlasers in hybrid integrated photonic networks, as well as optical computing.

Project description:We report the synthesis of colloidal CsPbX3-Pb4S3Br2 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystal heterostructures, providing an example of a sharp and atomically resolved epitaxial interface between a metal halide perovskite and a non-perovskite lattice. The CsPbBr3-Pb4S3Br2 nanocrystals are prepared by a two-step direct synthesis using preformed subnanometer CsPbBr3 clusters. Density functional theory calculations indicate the creation of a quasi-type II alignment at the heterointerface as well as the formation of localized trap states, promoting ultrafast separation of photogenerated excitons and carrier trapping, as confirmed by spectroscopic experiments. Postsynthesis reaction with either Cl- or I- ions delivers the corresponding CsPbCl3-Pb4S3Br2 and CsPbI3-Pb4S3Br2 heterostructures, thus enabling anion exchange only in the perovskite domain. An increased structural rigidity is conferred to the perovskite lattice when it is interfaced with the chalcohalide lattice. This is attested by the improved stability of the metastable γ phase (or "black" phase) of CsPbI3 in the CsPbI3-Pb4S3Br2 heterostructure.

Project description:While there is great demand for effective, affordable radiation detectors in various applications, many commonly used scintillators have major drawbacks. Conventional inorganic scintillators have a fixed emission wavelength and require expensive, high-temperature synthesis; plastic scintillators, while fast, inexpensive, and robust, have low atomic numbers, limiting their X-ray stopping power. Formamidinium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals show promise as scintillators due to their high X-ray attenuation coefficient and bright luminescence. Here, we used a room-temperature, solution-growth method to produce mixed-halide FAPbX3 (X = Cl, Br) nanocrystals with emission wavelengths that can be varied between 403 and 531 nm via adjustments to the halide ratio. The substitution of bromine for increasing amounts of chlorine resulted in violet emission with faster lifetimes, while larger proportions of bromine resulted in green emission with increased luminescence intensity. By loading FAPbBr3 nanocrystals into a PVT-based plastic scintillator matrix, we produced 1 mm-thick nanocomposite scintillators, which have brighter luminescence than the PVT-based plastic scintillator alone. While nanocomposites such as these are often opaque due to optical scattering from aggregates of the nanoparticles, we used a surface modification technique to improve transmission through the composites. A composite of FAPbBr3 nanocrystals encapsulated in inert PMMA produced even stronger luminescence, with intensity 3.8× greater than a comparative FAPbBr3/plastic scintillator composite. However, the luminescence decay time of the FAPbBr3/PMMA composite was more than 3× slower than that of the FAPbBr3/plastic scintillator composite. We also demonstrate the potential of these lead halide perovskite nanocomposite scintillators for low-cost X-ray imaging applications.

Project description:Lead-halide perovskites have triggered the latest breakthrough in photovoltaic technology. Despite the great promise shown by these materials, their instability towards water even in the presence of low amounts of moisture makes them, a priori, unsuitable for their direct use as light harvesters in aqueous solution for the production of hydrogen through water splitting. Here, we present a simple method that enables their use in photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen evolution while immersed in an aqueous solution. Field's metal, a fusible InBiSn alloy, is used to efficiently protect the perovskite from water while simultaneously allowing the photogenerated electrons to reach a Pt hydrogen evolution catalyst. A record photocurrent density of -9.8 mA cm(-2) at 0 V versus RHE with an onset potential as positive as 0.95±0.03 V versus RHE is obtained. The photoelectrodes show remarkable stability retaining more than 80% of their initial photocurrent for ∼1 h under continuous illumination.
