Project description:The pursuit of chiral lead-free metal halides with both high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and large luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) remains a priority for designing efficient circularly polarized light sources. However, a tradeoff exists between PLQY and glum in chiral materials due to the mismatched electric (μ) and magnetic transition dipole moment (m). Herein, we address this contradiction and develop the efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters through structural dimension modulation. By tuning the size and polarization of chiral organic cations and employing the cascade cationic insertion strategy, 0D, 1D and 3D indium-based chiral metal halides are constructed. These hybrids exhibit self-trapped excitons emission with near-unity PLQY, while the |glum| boosts exponentially from 10-3 to nearly 10-1 as the structural dimension increases from 0D to 3D, and the highest |glum| of 0.89 × 10-1 has been achieved. Structural analysis and theoretical calculation indicate the increased structural dimension promotes the formation of helical structure and enlarges magnetic transition dipole moment, thus resulting in improved CPL performance. Our research provides valuable insights on the relationship between glum and structural dimension, thus will advance the development of efficient CPL-active materials for practical applications.

Project description:To develop a simple and general method for improving the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances of materials is of great significance. In this work, two pairs of CPL-active homochiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) P/M-Et and P/M-Et(Cd) with eta topology are reported. In comparison to the reported isomorphic Zn-imidazolate MOFs P-Me and M-Me, both luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ) and photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL ) of P-Et and M-Et are largely improved by simply changing the methyl group to an ethyl group of ligands in P-Et and M-Et. Furthermore, the |glum | values are significantly amplified up to 0.015 from 0.0057 by introducing the non-luminescent halogenated aromatics, while an enhanced fluorescence efficiency is observed simultaneously (from 27.2% to 47.3%). The figure of merit value is about 40 times larger than that of P-Me and M-Me. Similarly, the CPL performances of P/M-Et(Cd) are improved by about five times after encapsulating fluorobenzene molecules. This work represents a new and simple method for developing CPL-active MOF materials.

Project description:Attributed to their unique dynamic planar chirality, pillar[n]arenes, particularly pillar[5]arenes, have evolved as promising platforms for diverse applications such as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters. However, due to the unit flipping and swing, the achievement of excellent CPL performances of pillar[5]arenes in solution state remains a formidable challenge. To deal with this key issue, a mechanically locking approach has been successfully developed, leading to boosted dissymmetry factor (glum) values of pyrene-tiaraed pillar[5]arenes up to 0.015 through the formation of corresponding [2]rotaxanes. More importantly, taking advantage of the stably locked co-conformers, these resultant [2]rotaxanes maintain excellent CPL performances in diverse solvents and wide range of concentrations, making them promising candidates for practical applications. According to this proof-of-concept study, we have not only successfully developed a powerful strategy for the rational design of chiral luminescent materials with desired CPL performances but also contributed a promising platform for the construction of smart chiral materials.

Project description:Realizing a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum) is a paramount yet challenging issue in the research field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Here, we reported a novel set of organic conjugated systems with twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) characteristics based on conjugated o-carborane-binaphthyl dyads composing of binaphthyl units as chiral electron donors and o-carborane units as achiral electron acceptors, demonstrating intense CPL with large g lum values. Interestingly, single-crystalline o-1 exhibited a high-level brightness and a large g lum factor as high as +0.13, whereas single-crystalline o-2 processed a relatively low brightness with a decreased g lum value to -0.04. The significant diversity of CPL-active properties was triggered by the selective introduction of o-carborane units onto the binaphthyl units. Benefiting from the large magnetic dipole transition moments in TICT states, the CPL activity of TICT o-carborane-based materials exhibited amplified circular polarization. This study provides an efficient molecular engineering strategy for the rational design and development of highly efficient CPL-active materials.

Project description:Chiral organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides as promising circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitter candidates hold great potential for high-definition displays and future spin-optoelectronics. The recent challenge lies primarily in developing high-performance red CPL emitters. Here, coupling the f-f transition characteristics of trivalent europium ions (Eu3+) with chirality, we construct the chiral Eu-based halides, (R/S-3BrMBA)3EuCl6, which exhibit strong and predictable red emission with large photoluminescence quantum yield (59.8%), narrow bandwidth (≈2 nm), long lifetime (≈2 ms), together with large dissymmetry factor |glum| of 1.84 × 10-2. Compared with the previously reported chiral metal halides, these chiral Eu-based halides show the highest red CPL brightness. Furthermore, the degree of photoluminescence polarization in (R/S-3BrMBA)3EuCl6 can be manipulated by the external magnetic field. Particularly, benefiting from the field-generated Zeeman splitting and spin mixing at exciton states, an anomalously positive magneto-photoluminescence was observed at room temperature. This work provides an efficient strategy for constructing both high-performance and pure-red CPL emitters. It also opens the door for chiral rare-earth halides toward chiral optoelectronic and spintronic applications.

Project description:Supramolecular polymers based on chiral macrocycles have attracted increasing attention in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) owing to their unique properties. However, the construction of macrocyclic supramolecular polymers with highly efficient CPL properties in aggregate states still remains challenging. Herein, w e constructed a class of macrocycle-based coordination polymers by combining the planar chiral properties of pillar[5]arene with the excellent fluorescence properties of aggregation-induced emission luminogens. The formation of polymers enhances both the fluorescence and chiral properties, resulting in chiral supramolecular polymers with remarkable CPL properties. Increasing the aggregation degree of the polymers can further improve their CPL properties, as evidenced by a 21-fold increase in the dissymmetry factor and an over 25-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield in the aggregate state compared to the solution state. Such a synergistic effect of polymerization- and aggregation-enhanced CPL can be explained by the restriction of intramolecular motions and aggregation-induced conformation confinement. This work provides a promising method for developing highly efficient CPL supramolecular polymers.

Project description:Achieving a higher dissymmetry factor is a crucial issue in developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. Here, by tailoring the solvent composition and the morphology of the same chiral emissive small molecules (R- or S-SPAn), circularly polarized emission with a boosted dissymmetry factor (two orders) was realized. It was found that by regulating the water fraction in the mixed THF/H2O, we were able to achieve kinetic control over association of chiral emissive R- or S-SPAn into various nanostructures with 0D nanospheres, 2D nanoflakes and 3D stacked nanoflakes. These nanostructures are all CPL active. Remarkably, the dissymmetry factors of the nanostructures were significantly enhanced compared to those of the molecules and further boosted in different morphologies, from ∼10-4 (0D nanospheres) to 10-3 (2D flake) to ∼10-2 (3D nanoflakes). The enlarged g lum value could be assigned to a good packing induced strong luminescence of an excimer. This strategy provides an efficient way to fabricate higher dissymmetry factor CPL organic nanomaterials by only changing the supramolecular architectures while using the same chiral small molecules.

Project description:The incorporation of boron-nitrogen (BN) units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as an isoelectronic replacement of two carbon atoms can significantly improve their optical properties, while the geometries are mostly retained. We report the first non-π-extended penta- and hexahelicenes comprising two aromatic 1,2-azaborinine rings. Comparing them with their all-carbon analogs regarding structural, spectral and (chir)optical properties allowed us to quantify the impact of the heteroatoms. In particular, BN-hexahelicene BN[6] exhibited a crystal structure congruent with its analog CC[6], but displayed a fivefold higher fluorescence quantum yield (φfl = 0.17) and an outstanding luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum| = 1.33 × 10-2). Such an unusual magnification of both properties at the same time makes BN-helicenes suitable candidates as circularly polarized luminescence emitters for applications in materials science.

Project description:Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.

Project description:The preparation of single-crystal polymers with circularly polarized luminesce (CPL) remains a challenging task in chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the single-crystal-to-single-crystal topochemical photopolymerization of a chiral organic salt to achieve this goal. The in-situ reaction of 1,4-bis((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)benzene (1) with chiral (+)- or (-)-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) gives the monomer crystal 1[( + )/( - )-CSA]2 showing yellow CPL with a high luminescent dissymmetry factor |glum| of 0.035 and emission quantum yield Φ of 49.7%. Upon photo-induced topochemical [2 + 2] polymerization, single-crystal polyionic polymers of poly-1[( + )/( - )-CSA]2 are obtained. The single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) photopolymerization is revealed by in situ powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray, optical microscopy, infrared, circular dichroism, and CPL spectroscopic analyzes. Interestingly, the photopolymer crystals show blue and handedness-inverted CPL with |glum| of 0.011 (Φ = 14.2%), with respect to the yellow CPL of the monomer crystal. Furthermore, patterned circularly-polarized photonic heterojunctions with alternate blue and yellow CPL sub-blocks are prepared by a mask-assisted photopolymerization method. Our findings provide a vision for fabricating high-performance CPL-active crystalline polymer materials, paving the way for the further development of photo-response chiral systems.
