Project description:Electrochemically reducing CO2 to ethanol is attractive but suffers from poor selectivity. Tandem catalysis that integrates the activation of CO2 to an intermediate using one active site and the subsequent formation of hydrocarbons on the other site offers a promising approach, where the control of the intermediate transfer between different catalytic sites is challenging. We propose an internally self-feeding mechanism that relies on the orientation of the mass transfer in a hierarchical structure and demonstrate it using a one-dimensional (1D) tandem core-shell catalyst. Specifically, the carbon-coated Ni-core (Ni/C) catalyzes the transformation of CO2-to-CO, after which the CO intermediates are guided to diffuse to the carbon-coated Cu-shell (Cu/C) and experience the selective reduction to ethanol, realizing the orientated key intermediate transfer. Results show that the Faradaic efficiency for ethanol was 18.2% at -1 V vs. RHE (VRHE) for up to 100 h. The following mechanism study supports the hypothesis that the CO2 reduction on Ni/C generates CO, which is further reduced to ethanol on Cu/C sites. Density functional theory calculations suggest a combined effect of the availability of CO intermediate in Ni/C core and the dimerization of key *CO intermediates, as well as the subsequent proton-electron transfer process on the Cu/C shell.

Project description:Artificial carbon fixation is a promising pathway for achieving the carbon cycle and environment remediation. However, the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and poor selectivity of CO2 reduction seriously limited the overall conversion efficiencies of solar energy to chemical fuels. Herein, we demonstrated a facile and feasible strategy to rationally regulate the coordination environment and electronic structure of surface-active sites on both photoanode and cathode. More specifically, the defect engineering has been employed to reduce the coordination number of ultrathin FeNi catalysts decorated on BiVO4 photoanodes, resulting in one of the highest OER activities of 6.51 mA cm-2 (1.23 VRHE, AM 1.5G). Additionally, single-atom cobalt (II) phthalocyanine anchoring on the N-rich carbon substrates to increase Co-N coordination number remarkably promotes CO2 adsorption and activation for high selective CO production. Their integration achieved a record activity of 109.4 μmol cm-2 h-1 for CO production with a faradaic efficiency of > 90%, and an outstanding solar conversion efficiency of 5.41% has been achieved by further integrating a photovoltaic utilizing the sunlight (> 500 nm).

Project description:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising route to close the carbon cycle by reducing CO2 into valuable fuels and chemicals. Electrocatalysts with high selectivity toward a single product are economically desirable yet challenging to achieve. Herein, we demonstrated a highly (111)-oriented Cu foil electrocatalyst with dense twin boundaries (TB) (tw-Cu) that showed a high Faradaic efficiency of 86.1 ± 5.3% toward CH4 at -1.2 ± 0.02 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical studies suggested that tw-Cu can significantly lower the reduction barrier for the rate-determining hydrogenation of CO compared to planar Cu(111) under working conditions, which suppressed the competing C-C coupling, leading to the experimentally observed high CH4 selectivity.

Project description:The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) represents a promising route for the clean utilization of stranded renewable resources, but poor selectivity resulting from the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous solution limits its practical applicability. In the present contribution a photocatalyst with hydrophobic surfaces was fabricated. It facilitates an efficient three-phase contact of CO2 (gas), H2 O (liquid), and catalyst (solid). Thus, concentrated CO2 molecules in the gas phase contact the catalyst surface directly, and can overcome the mass-transfer limitations of CO2 , inhibit the HER because of lowering proton contacts, and overall enhance the CRR. Even when loaded with platinum nanoparticles, one of the most efficient HER promotion cocatalysts, the three-phase photocatalyst maintains a selectivity of 87.9 %. Overall, three-phase photocatalysis provides a general and reliable method to enhance the competitiveness of the CRR.

Project description:There are growing interests in metal-free heteroatom-doped carbons for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Previous studies extensively focus on the effect of N-doping, and their products severely suffer from low current density (mostly <2 mA cm-2) and limited selectivity (<90%). Here, it is reported that heteroatom codoping offers a promising solution to the above challenge. As a proof of concept, N,P-codoped mesoporous carbon is prepared by annealing phytic-acid-functionalized ZIF-8 in NH3. In CO2-saturated 0.5 m NaHCO3, the catalyst enables CO2 reduction to CO with great selectivity close to 100% and large CO partial current density (≈8 mA cm-2), which are, to the best of knowledge, superior to all other relevant competitors. Theoretical simulations show that the improved activity and selectivity are stemmed from the enhanced surface adsorption of *COOH and *CO intermediates as a result of the synergy of N and P codoping.

Project description:Designing highly selective and energy-efficient electrocatalysts to minimize the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction in the electrochemical reduction of aqueous CO2 remains a challenge. In this study, we report that doping Pd with a small amount of Te could selectively convert CO2 to CO with a low overpotential. The PdTe/few-layer graphene (FLG) catalyst with a Pd/Te molar ratio of 1 : 0.05 displayed a maximum CO faradaic efficiency of about 90% at -0.8 V (vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), CO partial current density of 4.4 mA cm-2, and CO formation turnover frequency of 0.14 s-1 at -1.0 V (vs. a RHE), which were 3.7-, 4.3-, and 10-fold higher than those of a Pd/FLG catalyst, respectively. Density functional calculations showed that Te adatoms preferentially bind at the terrace sites of Pd, thereby suppressing undesired hydrogen evolution, whereas CO2 adsorption and activation occurred on the high index sites of Pd to produce CO.

Project description:We report here the first purely organometallic fac-[MnI (CO)3 (bis-Me NHC)Br] complex with unprecedented activity for the selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, exceeding 100 turnovers with excellent faradaic yields (ηCO ≈95 %) in anhydrous CH3 CN. Under the same conditions, a maximum turnover frequency (TOFmax ) of 2100 s-1 was measured by cyclic voltammetry, which clearly exceeds the values reported for other manganese-based catalysts. Moreover, the addition of water leads to the highest TOFmax value (ca. 320 000 s-1 ) ever reported for a manganese-based catalyst. A MnI tetracarbonyl intermediate was detected under catalytic conditions for the first time.

Project description:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction (CO2R) holds the potential to reduce the costs of solar fuel production by integrating CO2 utilization and light harvesting within one integrated device. However, the CO2R selectivity on the photocathode is limited by the lack of catalytic active sites and competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction. On the other hand, serious parasitic light absorption occurs on the front-side-illuminated photocathode due to the poor light transmittance of CO2R cocatalyst films, resulting in extremely low photocurrent density at the CO2R equilibrium potential. This paper describes the design and fabrication of a photocathode consisting of crystal phase-modulated Ag nanocrystal cocatalysts integrated on illumination-reaction decoupled heterojunction silicon (Si) substrate for the selective and efficient conversion of CO2. Ag nanocrystals containing unconventional hexagonal close-packed phases accelerate the charge transfer process in CO2R reaction, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance. Heterojunction Si substrate decouples light absorption from the CO2R catalyst layer, preventing the parasitic light absorption. The obtained photocathode exhibits a carbon monoxide (CO) Faradaic efficiency (FE) higher than 90% in a wide potential range, with the maximum FE reaching up to 97.4% at -0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. At the CO2/CO equilibrium potential, a CO partial photocurrent density of -2.7 mA cm-2 with a CO FE of 96.5% is achieved in 0.1 M KHCO3 electrolyte on this photocathode, surpassing the expensive benchmark Au-based PEC CO2R system.

Project description:In this work, via engineering the conformation of cobalt active center in cobalt phthalocyanine molecular catalyst, the catalytic efficiency of electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction to methanol can be dramatically tuned. Based on a collection of experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations, it reveals that the electron rearrangement of the Co 3d orbitals of cobalt phthalocyanine from the low-spin state (S = 1/2) to the high-spin state (S = 3/2), induced by molecular conformation change, is responsible for the greatly enhanced CO reduction reaction performance. Operando attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy measurements disclose accelerated hydrogenation of CORR intermediates, and kinetic isotope effect validates expedited proton-feeding rate over cobalt phthalocyanine with high-spin state. Further natural population analysis and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the high spin Co2+ can enhance the electron backdonation via the dxz/dyz-2π* bond and weaken the C-O bonding in *CO, promoting hydrogenation of CORR intermediates.

Project description:Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide with renewable energy is a sustainable way of producing carbon-neutral fuels. However, developing active, selective and stable electrocatalysts is challenging and entails material structure design and tailoring across a range of length scales. Here we report a cobalt-phthalocyanine-based high-performance carbon dioxide reduction electrocatalyst material developed with a combined nanoscale and molecular approach. On the nanoscale, cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules are uniformly anchored on carbon nanotubes to afford substantially increased current density, improved selectivity for carbon monoxide, and enhanced durability. On the molecular level, the catalytic performance is further enhanced by introducing cyano groups to the CoPc molecule. The resulting hybrid catalyst exhibits >95% Faradaic efficiency for carbon monoxide production in a wide potential range and extraordinary catalytic activity with a current density of 15.0 mA cm-2 and a turnover frequency of 4.1 s-1 at the overpotential of 0.52 V in a near-neutral aqueous solution.
