Oral supplementation with lactic acid bacteria improve the intestinal epithelial barrier and gut microbiota of broiler chicks to alleviate Salmonella Enteritidis infection.

ABSTRACT: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play a key role in regulating the balance of gut microbiota and serve as a suitable alternative to antibiotics. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of 2 LAB isolates Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lp71 (L. plantarum Lp71) and Enterococcus faecium Ef72 (E. faecium Ef72), and their roles in alleviating Salmonella Enteritidis infection. Sixty 1-day-old chicks were randomly divided into 4 groups which treated with or without L. plantarum Lp71 and E. faecium Ef72 mixture for 21 d, and then intestinal samples were collected for gut microbiota analysis, pathological and immunohistochemical analysis at 24 h post infection with or without Salmonella Enteritidis on the 22nd d. The results showed that L. plantarum Lp71 and E. faecium Ef72 had the ability to anti-
