ABSTRACT: Background
Intercropping increases land use efficiency and farmland ecological diversity. However, little is understood about whether and how soil biota, metabolites, and nutrients change under interspecific competition among plants. Thus, this study aimed to explore the changes in the physicochemical properties, microbial communities, and metabolites of rhizosphere and bulk soils of pepper monocropping and pepper-maize intercropping systems. Results
Intercropping significantly increased the contents of available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK), and decreased the pH value, whereas it had little effect on the total nitrogen (TN) and organic matter (OM) in the rhizosphere and bulk soils, compared with those in monocropping pepper. Moreover, the OM content was high
