Family perspectives on and experiences with advance care planning in nursing homes: A thematic synthesis.

ABSTRACT:

Objectives

To synthesize family members' experiences and perspectives on advance care planning (ACP) in nursing homes.

Methods

The thematic synthesis is reported following the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) statement. A systematic search of the APA PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus, Embase and PubMed databases is initially conducted in October 2022, and the search is updated in January 2024. Qualitative studies that presented family members' quotes regarding advance care planning in nursing homes published in a peer-reviewed journal were included. Screening and data extraction were independently performed by two reviewers, and any discrepancies were resolved with the assistance of the third author.
