Double-J stenting during TURBT increases risk of metachronous upper tract urothelial carcinoma.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

The potential impact of double-J (DJ) stenting during transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) on the occurrence of metachronous upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) remains a subject of debate. This study investigates the effect of DJ stenting during TURBT for bladder cancer (BC) on the incidence of metachronous UTUC.

Methods

We retrospectively analyzed the data from patients who underwent TURBT at our institution between September 2013 and September 2023. Patients were grouped based on whether DJ stents were placed during TURBT. The outcome was the occurrence of metachronous UTUC, defined by UTUC occurring 3 months after TURBT.
