Development of Modified Drug Delivery Systems with Metformin Loaded in Mesoporous Silica Matrices: Experimental and Theoretical Designs.
Ontology highlight
ABSTRACT: Background/Objectives: Mesoporous silica materials, particularly KIT-6, offer promising features, such as large surface area, tunable pore structures, and biocompatibility, making them ideal candidates for advanced drug delivery systems. The aims of this study were to develop and evaluate an innovative modified-release platform for metformin hydrochloride (MTF), using KIT-6 mesoporous silica as a matrix, to enhance oral antidiabetic therapy. Methods: KIT-6 was synthesized using an ultrasound-assisted sol-gel method and subsequently loaded with MTF via adsorption from alkaline aqueous solutions at two concentrations (1 and 3 mg/mL). The structural and morphological characteristics of the matrices-before and after drug loading-were assessed using SEM-EDX, TEM, and nitrogen adso
