Effect of multi-walled carbon nanotube exposure on the expression pattern of genes involved in silymarin synthesis pathway in Silybum Marianum L.

ABSTRACT: Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a significant medicinal plant used to treat various diseases, particularly liver diseases and cancer. The primary bioactive compound in this plant is silymarin, which has potent medicinal properties. An effective strategy to enhance silymarin production is the use of elicitors, which stimulate the expression of genes involved in its biosynthetic pathway. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are one such elicitor known in plant sciences for their ability to promote growth, improve stress resistance, and increase the production of secondary metabolites. In this study, we investigated the impact of varying MWCNT concentrations (0, 150, 300, and 600 ppm) and spraying durations (24 and 48 h) on the expression of thirteen genes associated with secondary metabo
