ABSTRACT: Octadecyldimethyl-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)-ammonium chloride (QAC18-silane), an amphiphilic compound containing a quaternary ammonium group attached to an alkyl chain, has been widely used as a surface coating to impart antifouling and antimicrobial activity. Its combination of a cationic charge and a hydrophobic C18-chain imparts unique amphiphilic properties relevant to biosensing and drug-delivery applications. This study evaluated QAC18-silane for the modification of oxidized mesoporous silicon (Ox-pSi). Three aspects of the chemistry of QAC18-silane are exploited here: first, its low tendency to cross-link with itself, avoiding buildup of multilayers and blocking of the pores in mesoporous materialsa problem commonly encountered in reactio
