Chewing difficulty, swallowing problems, xerostomia and cause-specific mortality among older adults: A 7-year follow-up JAGES cohort study.

ABSTRACT:

Aim

Although various poor oral health conditions have been reported to be associated with an increased all-cause mortality risk, a comprehensive investigation of the causes of death is limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between poor oral function and mortality due to various causes in older adults.

Methods

This 7-year follow-up cohort study used data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. The participants were independent older adults aged ≥65 years at baseline. The outcome and exposure variables were 10 types of cause-specific mortality and poor oral functioning (chewing difficulty, swallowing problems and xerostomia). Cause-specific hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards mo
