Post-operative opioid utilization after surgery for spinal trauma: a retrospective study at a level 1 trauma center.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Although prior studies have laid the groundwork in establishing a better understanding of opioid use in spine trauma patients, additional clarity is needed on injury-specific factors that may predispose to higher or longer-term opioid use in this population. This study aims to identify clinical and neurological predictors-both modifiable and non-modifiable-of postoperative opioid utilization and weaning among patients undergoing surgery for traumatic spinal injuries.

Methods

A retrospective chart review was conducted of consecutive adults who underwent surgery for traumatic spine injuries between July 17, 2017, and May 21, 2021, identified by current procedural terminology (CPT) codes. Demographic data, perioperative factors [i.e., spinal cord injury (SCI) complet
