Predictive significance of peripheral blood IL-6 and FeNO in pediatric Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections accompanied by airway hyperresponsiveness.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is a common cause of pediatric pneumonia and may contribute to airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). This study aimed to investigate the levels of evaluated peripheral blood interleukin-6 (IL-6) and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in pediatric patients with MP infection and AHR, and their predictive value for this co-occurrence.

Methods

A total of 120 pediatric patients with MP infection admitted to our hospital from June 2021 to May 2023 were stratified into an AHR cohort (n=45) and a non-AHR cohort (n=75) based on the presence or absence of AHR. General patient information, IL-6 and FeNO levels, lung function indices [forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (
