ABSTRACT: Background
Sarcopenia and frailty are emerging risk factors that may modify outcomes in patients with sepsis or septic shock. This review aims to assess the association of sarcopenia and frailty with mortality, length of stay in the hospital and intensive care unit (ICU), and duration of mechanical ventilation in adults with sepsis. Methods
The PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and CENTRAL databases were searched from inception to May 31, 2025, for observational studies reporting outcomes stratified by sarcopenia and/or frailty in sepsis. Random-effects meta-analyses (Der Simonian-Laird) were done, and the data were presented as pooled odds ratios (OR) for mortality and weighted mean differences (WMD) for continuous outcomes.
