Risk factors of delayed extubation after esophagectomy in the surgical intensive care unit.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Esophageal cancer is a common malignant tumor of the digestive tract, for which esophagectomy, a high-risk surgery, is the main treatment. Certain features of esophageal cancer surgery may increase the uncertainty of postoperative extubation, and inappropriate timing for extubation after esophagectomy may result in serious complications. This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of delayed extubation after esophagectomy in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU).

Methods

The study population included patients with esophageal cancer who were admitted to the SICU after undergoing transthoracic esophagectomy in one center from July 2023 to December 2023. In the SICU, patients who were extubated within 90 minutes were assigned to the early-extubatio
