ABSTRACT: Background
Intrapancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) has been linked to impaired β cell function and development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). It remains unclear whether IPFD is associated with incident T2D independent of visceral adiposity. Sex differences in the associations of IPFD with T2D are also unclear. We aimed to investigate the sex-specific associations of IPFD with risk of incident T2D, and whether the associations are independent of hepatic fat and visceral fat. Methods
This is a cohort study using data from the UK Biobank cohort. 22,703 participants with available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)- derived adiposity measures and without diabetes at the imaging visit were included. The main exposure was MRI-measured IPFD. The main outcome was incident T2D.Results
