Factors Associated With the Continuation of Breastfeeding Beyond 12 Months of Age in Brazilian Families.


ABSTRACT:

Aim

To measure the prevalence of BF amongst Brazilian children aged 12-24 months, assess associated social determinants and evaluate the impact of maternal knowledge about its benefits.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted between September and December 2024, using an online questionnaire completed by Brazilian mothers with children aged 12-24 months. Sociodemographic data were collected, including maternal and child age, education level, marital status, ethnicity, household income and employment status. Additional information was gathered on prenatal care, breastfeeding within the first hour of life, guidance received on BF and factors related to the continuation/interruption of BF.

Results

Over 70% of the 403 mothers surveyed were breastfeeding beyond 12 mo
