Synthesis and Characterization of [MF5(terpy)]+ (M = Mo, W) Salts: Autoionization of MF6 Induced by a Tridentate Ligand.
Ontology highlight
ABSTRACT: The reactions of the hexafluorides MoF6 and WF6 with the tridentate ligand terpyridine (terpy) result in autoionization forming [MF5(terpy)][MF7] (M = Mo, W) salts. Displacement of [WF7]- utilizing SbF5, yielded [WF5(terpy)][SbF6]. The octacoordinate [MF5(terpy)]+ cations adopt a bicapped trigonal prismatic geometry based on X-ray crystallography and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which is different than the geometry of previously reported fluorido WVI cations. The [MoF5(terpy)]+ cation represents the first fluorido MoVI cation.
