Piezo1 in intestinal smooth muscle cells: Emerging perspectives.
Ontology highlight
ABSTRACT: Intestinal motility is modulated by mechanical forces acting on smooth muscle (e.g. stretch, wall tension), yet the smooth muscle mechanotransduction machinery remains incompletely defined. In this conceptual review we discuss the impact of Piezo1, a mechanosensitive ion channel, on the function of intestinal smooth muscle cells and the regulation of gut motility. This is important as recent work has revealed significant impairments in small bowel contractility, tissue mechanics and structural properties resulting from Piezo1 deletion. Interestingly a large fraction of Piezo1 localizes intracellularly in small bowel smooth muscle cells, in close association with the sarcoplasmic reticulum ryanodine and IP3 receptor channels. This subcellular distribution suggests a specialized m
