Predictors and correlates of eating in the absence of hunger at age 12 months.
Ontology highlight
ABSTRACT: Behaviors observable during the eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) protocol may be useful early indicators of an emerging avid eating phenotype, but have not been examined in infancy. This study videotaped infants being offered desserts (e.g., cakes, donuts) after a meal, measured intake, and coded observed behaviors (variety, eating duration, rate, latency, and engagement, bite size, positive affect before and after tasting, latency to negative affect, and negative affect and resistance when dessert was taken away), which were scored to generate a 12-point eating avidity index (EAI). Sociodemographics, eating behaviors (Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire-Toddler (CEBQ-T) subscales and food-related tantrums), and dietary sweets intake were reported and anthropometrics measured.
