Partitioning of atmospherically relevant ions between bulk water and the water/vapor interface.

ABSTRACT: Recently, surface-sensitive spectroscopy data and molecular dynamics simulations have generated intense interest in the distribution of electrolyte ions between bulk water and the air/water interface. A partitioning model for cations and anions developed for biopolymer surface is extended here to interpret the effects of selected acids, bases, and salts on the surface tension of water. Data for electrolytes were analyzed by using a lower-bound value for the number of water molecules in the surface region [0.2 H(2)O A(-2) (approximately two layers of water)], obtained by assuming that both Na(+) and SO(4)(2-) (i.e., Na(2)SO(4)) are fully excluded from this region. Surface-bulk partition coefficients of atmospherically relevant anions and the proton are determined. Notably, we find that H(+) is most strongly surface-accumulated, I(-) is modestly accumulated, NO(3)(-) is evenly distributed, and OH(-) is weakly excluded.

Water diffusion in atmospherically relevant α-pinene secondary organic material.

Project description:Secondary organic material (SOM) constitutes a large mass fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles. Understanding its impact on climate and air quality relies on accurate models of interactions with water vapour. Recent research shows that SOM can be highly viscous and can even behave mechanically like a solid, leading to suggestions that particles exist out of equilibrium with water vapour in the atmosphere. In order to quantify any kinetic limitation we need to know water diffusion coefficients for SOM, but this quantity has, until now, only been estimated and has not yet been measured. We have directly measured water diffusion coefficients in the water soluble fraction of α-pinene SOM between 240 and 280 K. Here we show that, although this material can behave mechanically like a solid, at 280 K water diffusion is not kinetically limited on timescales of 1 s for atmospheric-sized particles. However, diffusion slows as temperature decreases. We use our measured data to constrain a Vignes-type parameterisation, which we extend to lower temperatures to show that SOM can take hours to equilibrate with water vapour under very cold conditions. Our modelling for 100 nm particles predicts that under mid- to upper-tropospheric conditions radial inhomogeneities in water content produce a low viscosity surface region and more solid interior, with implications for heterogeneous chemistry and ice nucleation.

Ions Speciation at the Water-Air Interface.

Project description:In typical aqueous systems, including naturally occurring sweet and salt water and tap water, multiple ion species are co-solvated. At the water-air interface, these ions are known to affect the chemical reactivity, aerosol formation, climate, and water odor. Yet, the composition of ions at the water interface has remained enigmatic. Here, using surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, we quantify the relative surface activity of two co-solvated ions in solution. We find that more hydrophobic ions are speciated to the interface due to the hydrophilic ions. Quantitative analysis shows that the interfacial hydrophobic ion population increases with decreasing interfacial hydrophilic ion population at the interface. Simulations show that the solvation energy difference between the ions and the intrinsic surface propensity of ions determine the extent of an ion's speciation by other ions. This mechanism provides a unified view of the speciation of monatomic and polyatomic ions at electrolyte solution interfaces.

Interactions between Small Inorganic Ions and Uncharged Monolayers on the Water/Air Interface.

Project description:The interaction of several simple electrolytes with uncharged insoluble monolayers is studied on the basis of tensiometric and potentiometric data for the surface electrolyte solution|air. The induced adsorption of electrolyte on the monolayer is determined via a combination of data for equilibrium spreading pressure and surface pressure versus area isotherms. We show that the monolayer-induced adsorption of electrolyte is not only strongly ion-specific but also surfactant-specific. The comparison between the ion-specific effects on a carboxylic acid monolayer at low pH and an ester monolayer shows that the anion series follows the same order while the cation series reverses. The effect of the electrolyte on the chemical potential of the monolayer shows attraction between the surfactant and the ions at low monolayer densities, but at high surface densities, repulsion seems to come into play. In nearly all investigated cases, a maximum of monolayer-induced electrolyte adsorption is observed at intermediate monolayer densities. This suggests specific interactions between the surfactant headgroup and the ions. The Volta potential data for the monolayers are analyzed on the basis of the equations of quadrupolar electrostatics. The analysis suggests that the ion-specific effect on the Volta potential is due to the ion-specific decrement of the bulk dielectric constant of the electrolyte solution. Moreover, we present evidence that in most cases the effect of the electrolyte on the orientation of the adsorbed dipoles cannot be neglected. Instead, the change in the ion distribution in the electric double layer seems to have a small effect on the Volta potential.

Solvation Structure and Energetics of Single Ions at the Aqueous Liquid-Vapor Interface.

Project description:Potentials of mean force for single, nonpolarizable monovalent halide anions and alkali cations are computed for transversing the water-air interface (modeling using polarizable TIP4P-FQ and TIP4P-QDP). Iodide and bromide in TIP4P-FQ show interfacial stability, whereas chloride, bromide, and iodide show interfacial stability in TIP4P-QDP. A monotonic decrease in coordination number and an increasingly anisotropic distribution of solvating water molecules is shown to accompany movement of the ions towards vapor conditions; these effects are most noticeable with increases in ion size/decreases in magnitude of hydration free energy.

Temperature dependence and energetics of single ions at the aqueous liquid-vapor interface.

Project description:We investigate temperature-dependence of free energetics with two single halide anions, I(-) and Cl(-), crossing the aqueous liquid-vapor interface through molecular dynamics simulations. The result shows that I(-) has a modest surface stability of 0.5 kcal/mol at 300 K and the stability decreases as the temperature increases, indicating the surface adsorption process for the anion is entropically disfavored. In contrast, Cl(-) shows no such surface state at all temperatures. Decomposition of free energetics reveals that water-water interactions provide a favorable enthalpic contribution, while the desolvation of ion induces an increase in free energy. Calculations of surface fluctuations demonstrate that I(-) generates significantly greater interfacial fluctuations compared to Cl(-). The fluctuation is attributed to the malleability of the solvation shells, which allows for more long-ranged perturbations and solvent density redistribution induced by I(-) as the anion approaches the liquid-vapor interface. The increase in temperature of the solvent enhances the inherent thermally excited fluctuations and consequently reduces the relative contribution from anion to surface fluctuations, which is consistent with the decrease in surface stability of I(-). Our results indicate a strong correlation with induced interfacial fluctuations and anion surface stability; moreover, resulting temperature dependent behavior of induced fluctuations suggests the possibility of a critical level of induced fluctuations associated with surface stability.

Water-mediated ion-ion interactions are enhanced at the water vapor-liquid interface.

Project description:There is overwhelming evidence that ions are present near the vapor-liquid interface of aqueous salt solutions. Charged groups can also be driven to interfaces by attaching them to hydrophobic moieties. Despite their importance in many self-assembly phenomena, how ion-ion interactions are affected by interfaces is not understood. We use molecular simulations to show that the effective forces between small ions change character dramatically near the water vapor-liquid interface. Specifically, the water-mediated attraction between oppositely charged ions is enhanced relative to that in bulk water. Further, the repulsion between like-charged ions is weaker than that expected from a continuum dielectric description and can even become attractive as the ions are drawn to the vapor side. We show that thermodynamics of ion association are governed by a delicate balance of ion hydration, interfacial tension, and restriction of capillary fluctuations at the interface, leading to nonintuitive phenomena, such as water-mediated like charge attraction. "Sticky" electrostatic interactions may have important consequences on biomolecular structure, assembly, and aggregation at soft liquid interfaces. We demonstrate this by studying an interfacially active model peptide that changes its structure from α-helical to a hairpin-turn-like one in response to charging of its ends.

Spherical monovalent ions at aqueous liquid-vapor interfaces: interfacial stability and induced interface fluctuations.

Project description:Ion-specific interfacial behaviors of monovalent halides impact processes such as protein denaturation, interfacial stability, and surface tension modulation, and as such, their molecular and thermodynamic underpinnings garner much attention. We use molecular dynamics simulations of monovalent anions in water to explore effects on distant interfaces. We observe long-ranged ion-induced perturbations of the aqueous environment, as suggested by experiment and theory. Surface stable ions, characterized as such by minima in potentials of mean force computed using umbrella sampling MD simulations, induce larger interfacial fluctuations compared to nonsurface active species, conferring more entropy approaching the interface. Smaller anions and cations show no interfacial potential of mean force minima. The difference is traced to hydration shell properties of the anions, and the coupling of these shells with distant solvent. The effects correlate with the positions of the anions in the Hofmeister series (acknowledging variations in force field ability to recapitulate essential underlying physics), suggesting how differences in induced, nonlocal perturbations of interfaces may be related to different specific-ion effects in dilute biophysical and nanomaterial systems.

Orientation of Methylguanidinium Ions at the Water-Air Interface.

Project description:We use heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation (HD-VSFG) to determine the orientation of the molecular plane of methylguanidinium ions at the surface of aqueous solutions. We measure the VSFG response of the symmetric and antisymmetric methyl stretch vibrations of the methylguanidinium ion with different polarization combinations. We find that for at least 50% of the methylguanidinium ions the molecular plane is at an angle >20° with respect to the surface plane. Hence, for only a minor fraction of the ions does the molecular plane have an orientation (near-)parallel to the surface plane, in contrast to the predictions of recent molecular dynamics simulation studies.

Synthesis and Hydrolysis of Atmospherically Relevant Monoterpene-Derived Organic Nitrates.

Project description:The partition of gas-phase organic nitrates (ONs) to aerosols and subsequent hydrolysis are regarded as important loss mechanisms for ON species. However, the hydrolysis mechanisms and the major factors controlling the hydrolysis lifetime are not fully understood. In this work, we synthesized seven monoterpene-derived ONs and systematically investigated their hydrolysis in bulk solutions at different pH values. The hydrolysis lifetimes ranged from 12.9 min to 8.5 h for allylic primary ON and tertiary ONs, but secondary ONs were stable at neutral pH. The alkyl substitution numbers, functional groups, and carbon skeletons were three important factors controlling hydrolysis rates. Tertiary and secondary ONs were found to hydrolyze via the acid-catalyzed unimolecular (SN1) mechanism, while a competition of SN1 and bimolecular (SN2) mechanisms accounted for the hydrolysis of primary ONs. The consistency of experimental and theoretical hydrolysis rates calculated by density functional theory further supported the proposed mechanisms. Reversible reactions including hydrolysis and nitration were first reported to explain the hydrolysis of ONs, highlighting the possibility that particulate nitric acid can participate in nitration to generate new nitrogen-containing compounds. These findings demonstrate that ON hydrolysis is a complex reaction that proceeds via different mechanisms and is controlled by various parameters.

Phospholipid-subclass-specific partitioning of lipophilic ions in membrane-water systems.

Project description:Herein, we systematically investigate phospholipid-subclass-specific alterations in the partitioning of both cationic and anionic amphiphiles to identify the importance of ester, ether and vinyl ether linkages at the sn-1 position of phospholipids in the partitioning of charged amphiphiles. The results demonstrated that the membrane-water partition coefficient of a prototypic cationic amphiphile (i.e. 3,3'-dipropylthiadicarbocyanine iodide) was approximately 2.5 times higher in membranes comprised of plasmenylcholine in comparison with membranes comprised of either phosphatidylcholine or plasmanylcholine. In striking contrast, the membrane-water partition coefficient of a prototypic anionic amphiphile [i.e. bis-(1,3-dibutylbarbituric acid)trimethine oxonol] in membranes comprised of plasmenylcholine was approximately 2.5 times lower than that manifest in membranes comprised of phosphatidylcholine or plasmanylcholine. Utilizing theseexperimentally determined partition coefficients,the relative membrane dipole potential of membranes comprised of plasmenylcholine was calculated and found to be approximately 25 mV lower than in membranes comprised of phosphatidylcholine or plasmanylcholine. This lower membrane dipole potential in membranes comprised of plasmenylcholine is equivalent to the membrane potential induced by incorporation of approximately 25 mol% of anionic phospholipids in membranes comprised of phosphatidylcholine. Collectively, these results demonstrate that phospholipid-subclass-specific differences in the membrane dipole potential contribute to alterations in the partitioning of lipophilic ions in membrane bilayers comprised of distinct phospholipid subclasses. Moreover, they suggest that these physicochemical differences can be exploited to facilitate the targeting of charged lipophilic drugs to specific cells and subcellular membrane compartments.
