The outer leaflet of the outer membrane of the Gram-negative bacterium serves as a permeability barrier and is composed of lipopolysaccharide, also known as endotoxin. The membrane anchor of lipopolysaccharide is lipid A, the biosynthesis of which is essential for cell viability.
