Impact of competitive inhibition and sequence variation upon the sensitivity of malaria PCR.

ABSTRACT: Real-time PCR assays for Plasmodium species utilizing universal and species-specific primers were compared to investigate variables influencing decreased assay sensitivity. Sequence variation in oligomer targets and competitive inhibition of dual-species templates in universal-primer mixes were found to decrease assay sensitivity.
