Neuro-oncology: a selected review of ASCO 2012 abstracts.

Project description:The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the largest clinical oncology meeting in the USA, meets annually and reproducibly provides an exciting forum to present new cancer clinical trials and research data. The ASCO 2012 CNS tumors section comprised 3 days of presentations and over 130 abstracts, providing an overview of neuro-oncology, including both metastatic diseases of the CNS and primary brain tumors. This brief review attempts to highlight select abstracts presented at this year's meeting in an organized manner that will provide a portrait of a large and multifaceted meeting.

Project description:ASCO 2016, 29 May-2 June 2016, Chicago, IL, USA The largest annual clinical oncology conference the American Society of Clinical Oncology is held in the USA and gives researchers and other key opinion leaders the opportunity to present new cancer clinical trials and research data. The CNS tumors section of the American Society of Clinical Oncology 2016 covered various aspects of neuro-oncology including metastatic CNS diseases and primary brain tumors, presented via posters, oral talks and over 100 abstracts. This brief review selectively highlights presentations from this meeting in an organizational manner that reflects clinically relevant aspects of a large and multifaceted meeting.

Project description:IntroductionThe 19th Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) took place in November of 2014. The focus of many abstracts, as well as the Education Day, was on recent advances in the study of central nervous system (CNS) metastases.Tumor biologyKey studies evaluating the factors in tumors and their microenvironment associated with the development and growth of brain metastases are reviewed.PrognosticationStudies investigating the factors that independently influence survival in participants with brain metastases are presented.Response assessmentThe Response Assessment for Neuro-Oncology criteria for brain metastases (RANO-BM) and the Neurological Assessment in Neuro-Oncology (NANO) criteria, which were both presented, are recapped.RadiotherapyStudies are reviewed evaluating factors that influence survival outcomes in participants with brain metastases who were treated with radiotherapy. Studies investigating the potential risk of radiation necrosis with the combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapies are presented.Systemic therapiesBrain metastases-focused subset analyses from the ASCEND-1 trial for ALK-translocated non-small cell lung cancer are presented. Preclinical and clinical work on solid tumor leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is also covered.Sequelae of central nervous system metastases and their treatmentsAn overview is provided of treatment- related toxicities as well as important concepts that may influence strategies to protect against these toxicities.ConclusionsKey concepts regarding tumor biology, prognostication, response assessment, therapeutic management, and sequelae of treatment for CNS metastases are summarized. Advances in our understanding of the basic and clinical science of CNS metastases have the potential to improve outcomes for patients.

Updates from the Neuro-Oncology Section of the 2015 American Neurological Association Annual Meeting.

Project description:American Neurological Association Annual Meeting, Chicago, IL, USA, 27-29 September 2015 The American Neurological Association (ANA) held its annual meeting in Chicago, IL, USA on 27-29 September 2015. The Scientific Programming Advisory Committee was chaired by Dr. S Pleasure from the University of California-San Francisco (CA, USA). The Neuro-Oncology session, chaired by Dr. A Pruitt from the University of Pennsylvania (PA, USA) and cochaired by Dr. J Laterra from Johns Hopkins University (MD, USA), was held on 27 September 2015. Speakers included Dr. D Wainwright (Northwestern University, IL, USA), Dr. N Kolb (University of Utah, UT, USA), Dr. A Nath (NINDS/NIH, MD, USA), Dr. D Franz (Cincinnati Children's Hospital, OH, USA) and Dr. R Lukas (University of Chicago, IL, USA). A summary of key presentations from the Neuro-Oncology section of the 2015 American Neurological Association annual meeting is reported. Preclinical and clinical advances in the use of immunotherapies for the treatment of primary and metastatic CNS tumors are covered. Particular attention is paid to the enzyme indoleamine dioxygenase and the immune checkpoints CTLA4 and PD1 and their ligands. Specific nervous system toxicities associated with novel immunotherapies are also discussed. The recent success of targeting the mTOR pathway in the neurocutaneous syndrome tuberous sclerosis is detailed. Finally, important early steps in our understanding of the common toxicity of chemotherapy induced neuropathy are reviewed.
