Project description:The 3d-metal mediated nitrene transfer is under intense scrutiny due to its potential as an atom economic and ecologically benign way for the directed amination of (un)functionalised C-H bonds. Here we present the isolation and characterisation of a rare, trigonal imido cobalt(III) complex, which bears a rather long cobalt-imido bond. It can cleanly cleave strong C-H bonds with a bond dissociation energy of up to 92 kcal mol-1 in an intermolecular fashion, unprecedented for imido cobalt complexes. This resulted in the amido cobalt(II) complex [Co(hmds)2 (NHt Bu)]- . Kinetic studies on this reaction revealed an H atom transfer mechanism. Remarkably, the cobalt(II) amide itself is capable of mediating H atom abstraction or stepwise proton/electron transfer depending on the substrate. A cobalt-mediated catalytic application for substrate dehydrogenation using an organo azide is presented.

Project description:The electrochemical proton reactivity of transition metal complexes receives significant attentions. A thorough understanding of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathways is essential for elucidating the mechanism behind a proton reduction reaction, and controlling the pathway is a key focus in the field of the catalyst development. Spin interactions within complexes, which arise during electron transfer, can affect significantly the PCET pathway. Herein, we explore the phenomenon of spin rearrangement during the electrochemical reorganization of high-spin cobalt complexes. Our findings reveal that opposing spin interactions, induced by different coordination environments, can alter the PCET pathway. Finally, detailed analysis of the PCET pathway allows us to propose mechanisms for proton reduction in high-spin cobalt complexes.

Project description:Ruthenium(II) complexes having pterins of redox-active heteroaromatic coenzymes as ligands were demonstrated to perform multistep proton transfer (PT), electron transfer (ET), and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes. Thermodynamic parameters including pK(a) and bond dissociation energy (BDE) of multistep PCET processes in acetonitrile (MeCN) were determined for ruthenium-pterin complexes, [Ru(II)(Hdmp)(TPA)](ClO(4))(2) (1), [Ru(II)(Hdmdmp)(TPA)](ClO(4))(2) (2), [Ru(II)(dmp(-))(TPA)]ClO(4) (3), and [Ru(II)(dmdmp(-))(TPA)]ClO(4) (4) (Hdmp = 6,7-dimethylpterin, Hdmdmp = N,N-dimethyl-6,7-dimethylpterin, TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine), all of which had been isolated and characterized before. The BDE difference between 1 and one-electron oxidized species, [Ru(III)(dmp(-))(TPA)](2+), was determined to be 89 kcal mol(-1), which was large enough to achieve hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from phenol derivatives. In the HAT reactions from phenol derivatives to [Ru(III)(dmp(-))(TPA)](2+), the second-order rate constants (k) were determined to exhibit a linear relationship with BDE values of phenol derivatives with a slope (-0.4), suggesting that this HAT is simultaneous proton and electron transfer. As for HAT reaction from 2,4,6-tri-tert-buthylphenol (TBP; BDE = 79.15 kcal mol(-1)) to [Ru(III)(dmp(-))(TPA)](2+), the activation parameters were determined to be DeltaH(double dagger) = 1.6 +/- 0.2 kcal mol(-1) and DeltaS(double dagger) = -36 +/- 2 cal K(-1) mol(-1). This small activation enthalpy suggests a hydrogen-bonded adduct formation prior to HAT. Actually, in the reaction of 4-nitrophenol with [Ru(III)(dmp(-))(TPA)](2+), the second-order rate constants exhibited saturation behavior at higher concentrations of the substrate, and low-temperature ESI-MS allowed us to detect the hydrogen-bonding adduct. This also lends credence to an associative mechanism of the HAT involving intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the deprotonated dmp ligand and the phenolic O-H to facilitate the reaction. In particular, a two-point hydrogen bonding between the complex and the substrate involving the 2-amino group of the deprotonated pterin ligand effectively facilitates the HAT reaction from the substrate to the Ru(III)-pterin complex.

Project description:Photosystem II (PSII) catalyzes the light driven oxidation of water and the reduction of plastoquinone. PSII is a multisubunit membrane protein; the D1 and D2 polypeptides form the heterodimeric core of the PSII complex. Water oxidation occurs at a manganese-containing oxygen evolving complex (OEC). PSII contains two redox active tyrosines, Y(Z) and Y(D), which form the neutral tyrosyl radicals, Y(z)(*) and Y(D)(*). Y(D) has been assigned as tyrosine 160 in the D2 polypeptide through isotopic labeling and site-directed mutagenesis. Whereas Y(D) is not directly involved in the oxidation of water, it has been implicated in the formation and stabilization of the OEC. PSII structures have shown Y(D) to be within hydrogen-bonding distance of histidine 189 in the D2 polypeptide. Spectroscopic studies have suggested that a proton is transferred between Y(D) and histidine 189 when Y(D) is oxidized and reduced. In our previous work, we used (2)H(2)O solvent exchange to demonstrate that the mechanism of Y(D) proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) differs at high and low pH. In this article, we utilize the proton inventory technique to obtain more information concerning PCET mechanism at high pH. The hypercurvature of the proton inventory data provides evidence for the existence of multiple, proton-donation pathways to Y(D)(*). In addition, at least one of these pathways must involve the transfer of more than one proton.

Project description:The uptake of hydrogen atoms (H-atoms) into reducible metal oxides has implications in catalysis and energy storage. However, outside of computational modeling, it is difficult to obtain insight into the physicochemical factors that govern H-atom uptake at the atomic level. Here, we describe oxygen-atom vacancy formation in a series of hexavanadate assemblies via proton-coupled electron transfer, presenting a novel pathway for the formation of defect sites at the surface of redox-active metal oxides. Kinetic investigations reveal that H-atom transfer to the metal oxide surface occurs through concerted proton-electron transfer, resulting in the formation of a transient VIII-OH2 moiety that, upon displacement of the water ligand with an acetonitrile molecule, forms the oxygen-deficient polyoxovanadate-alkoxide cluster. Oxidation state distribution of the cluster core dictates the affinity of surface oxido ligands for H-atoms, mirroring the behavior of reducible metal oxide nanocrystals. Ultimately, atomistic insights from this work provide new design criteria for predictive proton-coupled electron-transfer reactivity of terminal M═O moieties at the surface of nanoscopic metal oxides.

Project description:In the biosynthesis sterols an enzyme-catalyzed demethylation is achieved via a stepwise oxidative transformation of alcohols to olefins. The overall demethylation proceeds through two sequential monooxygenation reactions and a subsequent dehydroformylative saturation. To mimic the desaturation processes observed in nature, we have successfully integrated photoredox proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and cobaloxime chemistry for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols. The state-of-the-art remote and precise desaturation of ketones proceeds efficiently through the activation of cyclic alcohols using bond-dissociation free energy (BDFE) as thermodynamic driving force. The resulting transient alkoxyl radical allows C-C bond scission to generate the carbon-centered radical remote to the carbonyl moiety. This key intermediate is subsequently combined with cobaloxime photochemistry to furnish the alkene. Moreover, the mild protocol can be extended to desaturation of linear alcohols as well as aromatic hydrocarbons. Application to bioactive molecules and natural product derivatives is also presented.

Project description:Multiple-site concerted proton-electron transfer (MS-CPET) reactions were studied in a three-component system. 1-Hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPOH) was oxidized to the stable radical TEMPO by electron transfer to ferrocenium oxidants coupled to proton transfer to various pyridine bases. These MS-CPET reactions contrast with the usual reactivity of TEMPOH by hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to a single e-/H+ acceptor. The three-component reactions proceed by pre-equilibrium formation of a hydrogen-bonded adduct between TEMPOH and the pyridine base, and the adduct is then oxidized by the ferrocenium in a bimolecular MS-CPET step. The second-order rate constants, measured using stopped-flow kinetic techniques, spanned 4 orders of magnitude. An advantage of this system is that the MS-CPET driving force could be independently varied by changing either the pKa of the base or the reduction potential (E°) of the oxidant. Changes in ΔG°MS-CPET from either source had the same effect on the MS-CPET rate constants, and a combined Brønsted plot of ln(kMS-CPET) vs ln(Keq) was linear with a slope of 0.46. These results imply a synchronous concerted mechanism, in which the proton and electron transfer components of the CPET process make equal contributions to the rate constants. The only outliers to the Brønsted correlation are the reactions with sterically hindered pyridines, which apparently hinder the close approach of proton donor and acceptor that facilitates MS-CPET. These three-component reactions are compared with a related HAT reaction of TEMPOH, with the 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxyl radical. The MS-CPET and HAT oxidations of TEMPOH at the same driving force occurred with similar rate constants. While this is an imperfect comparison, the data suggest that the separation of the proton and electron to different reagents does not significantly inhibit the proton-coupled electron transfer process.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a NiOH core bearing a tridentate redox-active ligand capable of reaching three molecular oxidation states is presented in this paper. The reduced complex [LNiOH]2- was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, depicting a square-planar NiOH core stabilized by intramolecular H-bonding interactions. Cyclic voltammetry measurements indicated that [LNiOH]2- can be reversibly oxidized to [LNiOH]- and [LNiOH] at very negative reduction potentials (-1.13 and -0.39 V vs ferrocene, respectively). The oxidation of [LNiOH]2- to [LNiOH]- and [LNiOH] was accomplished using 1 and 2 equiv of ferrocenium, respectively. Spectroscopic and computational characterization suggest that [LNiOH]2-, [LNiOH]-, and [LNiOH] are all NiII species in which the redox-active ligand adopts different oxidation states (catecholate-like, semiquinone-like, and quinone-like, respectively). The NiOH species were found to promote H-atom abstraction from organic substrates, with [LNiOH]- acting as a 1H+/1e- oxidant and [LNiOH] as a 2H+/2e- oxidant. Thermochemical analysis indicated that [LNiOH] was capable of abstracting H atoms from stronger O-H bonds than [LNiOH]-. However, the greater thermochemical tendency of [LNiOH] reactivity toward H atoms did not align with the kinetics of the PCET reaction, where [LNiOH]- reacted with H-atom donors much faster than [LNiOH]. The unique stereoelectronic structure of [LNiOH]- (radical character combined with a basic NiOH core) might account for its enhanced PCET reactivity.
