Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is essential for the DNA cleavage that initiates both somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class switch recombination (CSR) of the Ig gene. Two alternative mechanisms of DNA cleavage by AID have been proposed: RNA editing and DNA deamination.
