Project description:The first enantioselective organocatalytic α-allylation of cyclic ketones has been accomplished via singly occupied molecular orbital catalysis. Geometrically constrained radical cations, forged from the one-electron oxidation of transiently generated enamines, readily undergo allylic alkylation with a variety of commercially available allyl silanes. A reasonable latitude in both the ketone and allyl silane components is readily accommodated in this new transformation. Moreover, three new oxidatively stable imidazolidinone catalysts have been developed that allow cyclic ketones to successfully participate in this transformation. The new catalyst platform has also been exploited in the first catalytic enantioselective α-enolation and α-carbooxidation of ketones.

Project description:The first organocatalytic enantioselective radical polycyclization has been accomplished using singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) catalysis. The presented strategy relies on a selective single-electron oxidation of chiral enamines formed by condensation of polyenals with an imidazolidinone catalyst employing a suitable copper(II) oxidant. The reaction proceeds under mildly acidic conditions at room temperature and shows compatibility with an array of electron-poor as well as electron-rich functional groups. Upon termination by radical arylation followed by subsequent oxidation and rearomatization, a range of polycyclic aldehydes were accessed (12 examples, 54-77% yield, 85-93% ee). The enantioselective formation of up to six new carbocycles in a single catalyst-controlled cascade is described. Evidence for a radical-based cascade mechanism is indicated by a series of experimental results.

Project description:While Ti(iii) alkyl species are the proposed active sites in Ziegler-Natta ethylene polymerization catalysts, the corresponding well-defined homogeneous catalysts are not known. We report that well-defined neutral β-diiminato Ti(iii) alkyl species, namely [Ti(nacnac)(CH2 t Bu)2] and its alumina-grafted derivative [(AlsO)Ti(nacnac)(CH2 t Bu)], are active towards ethylene polymerization at moderate pressures and temperatures and possess an electron configuration well-adapted to insertion of ethylene. Advanced EPR spectroscopy showed that ethylene insertion into a Ti(iii)-C bond takes place during polymerization from Ti(nacnac)(CH2 t Bu)2. A combination of pulsed EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, based on a crystal structure of [Ti(nacnac)(CH2 t Bu)2], enabled us to reveal details about the structure and electronic configurations of both molecular and surface-grafted species. For both compounds, the α-agostic C-H interaction, which involves the singly occupied molecular orbital, indicates a π character of the metal-carbon bond; this π character is enhanced upon ethylene coordination, leading to a nearly barrier-less C2H4 insertion into Ti(iii)-C bonds after this first step. During coordination, back donation from the SOMO to the π*(C2H4) occurs, leading to stabilization of π-ethylene complexes and to a significant lowering of the overall energy of the C2H4 insertion transition state. In d1 alkyl complexes, ethylene insertion follows an original "augmented" Cossee-Arlman mechanism that involves the delocalization of unpaired electrons between the SOMO, π*(C2H4) and σ*(Ti-C) in the transition state, which further favors ethylene insertion. All these factors facilitate ethylene polymerization on Ti(iii) neutral alkyl species and make d1 alkyl complexes potentially more effective polymerization catalysts than their d0 analogues.

Project description:In this paper, the nature of the lowest-energy electrons is detailed. The orbital occupied by such electrons can be termed the lowest occupied molecular orbital (LOMO). There is a good correspondence between the Hückel method in chemistry and graph theory in mathematics; the molecular orbital, which chemists view as the distribution of an electron with a specific energy, is to mathematicians an algebraic entity, an eigenvector. The mathematical counterpart of LOMO is known as eigenvector centrality, a centrality measure characterizing nodes in networks. It may be instrumental in solving some problems in chemistry, and also it has implications for the challenge facing humanity today. This paper starts with a demonstration of the transmission of infectious disease in social networks, although it is unusual for a chemistry paper but may be a suitable example for understanding what the centrality (LOMO) is all about. The converged distribution of infected patients on the network coincides with the distribution of the LOMO of a molecule that shares the same network structure or topology. This is because the mathematical structures behind graph theory and quantum mechanics are common. Furthermore, the LOMO coefficient can be regarded as a manifestation of the centrality of atoms in an atomic assembly, indicating which atom plays the most important role in the assembly or which one has the greatest influence on the network of these atoms. Therefore, it is proposed that one can predict the binding energy of a metal atom to its cluster based on its LOMO coefficient. A possible improvement of the descriptor using a more sophisticated centrality measure is also discussed.

Project description:A novel nickel-catalyzed asymmetric 1,2-vinylboration reaction has been developed to afford benzylic alkenylboration products with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities by using a chiral bisoxazoline ligand. Under optimized conditions, a wide variety of chiral 2-boryl-1,1-arylvinylalkanes are efficiently prepared from readily available olefins and vinyl halides in the presence of bis(pinacolato)diboron as the boron source in a mild and easy-to-operate manner. This three-component cascade protocol furnishes exceptional chemo- and stereoselectivity, and its usefulness is illustrated by its application in asymmetric modifications of several structurally complex natural products and pharmaceuticals.

Project description:The intramolecular alpha-arylation of aldehydes has been accomplished using singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) catalysis. Selective oxidation of chiral enamines (formed by the condensation of an aldehyde and a secondary amine catalyst) leads to the formation of a 3pi-electron radical species. These chiral SOMO-activated radical cations undergo enantioselective reaction with an array of pendent electron-rich aromatics and heterocycles thus efficiently providing cyclic alpha-aryl aldehyde products (10 examples: > or = 70% yield and > or = 90% ee). In accordance with our radical mechanism, when there is a choice between arylation at the ortho or para position of anisole substrates, we find that arylation proceeds selectively at the ortho position.

Project description:Recently, transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric dicarbofunctionalization of tethered alkenes has emerged as a powerful method for construction of chiral cyclic carbo- and heterocycles. However, all these reactions rely on facially selective arylmetalation of the pendant olefinic unit. Here, we successfully apply acylnickelation as the enantiodetermining step in the asymmetric nickel-catalyzed reductive carbo-acylation of aryl carbamic chloride-tethered alkenes with primary and secondary alkyl iodides as well as benzyl chlorides as the coupling partners, using manganese as a reducing agent. By circumventing the use of pre-generated organometallics, this reductive strategy enables the synthesis of diverse enantioenriched oxindoles bearing a quaternary stereogenic center under mild reaction conditions with high tolerance of a broad range of functional moieties.

A radical-polar crossover mechanism is proposed wherein olefin addition to a transient enamine radical cation and oxidation of the resulting radical furnishes a cation which is vulnerable to nucleophilic addition. A range of aromatic aldehydes are shown to couple with styrenes and dienes to provide cyclic products with high chemical efficiency, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity.

Project description:A series of optically active hypervalent iodine(III) reagents prepared from the corresponding (R)-2-(2-iodophenoxy)propanoate derivative was employed for the asymmetric dioxytosylation of styrene and its derivatives. The electrophilic addition of the hypervalent iodine(III) compound toward styrene proceeded with high enantioface selectivity to give 1-aryl-1,2-di(tosyloxy)ethane with an enantiomeric excess of 70-96% of the (S)-isomer.
