A nonlinear relationship of generalized and central obesity with diurnal cortisol secretion in the Whitehall II study.

ABSTRACT:

Context

Evidence for an association of measures of generalized and central obesity with salivary cortisol secretion is equivocal.

Objective

The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and salivary cortisol.

Design

The design was a cross-sectional study of BMI, waist circumference, and salivary cortisol from phase 7 (2002-2004) of the Whitehall II study.

Setting

The occupational cohort was originally recruited in 1985-1988.

Participants

Participants included 2915 men and 1041 women aged 50-74 yr with complete information on height, weight and waist circumference, and cortisol secretion.
