ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(4)HBr(3)S, there are two essentially planar mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal structure, bifurcated C-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into chains. Weak Br⋯Br inter-actions [Br⋯Br = 3.634 (4)-3.691 (4) Å] then lead to undulating sheets in the bc plane.

Project description:The title compound, C5H3N3OS, is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation for the ten non-H atoms = 0.018 Å) and forms an extended layer structure in the (100) plane, held together via hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between adjacent mol-ecules. Of particular note is the occurrence of RC-H⋯N(-)=N(+)=NR inter-actions between an aromatic C-H group and an azide moiety which, in conjunction with a complementary C-H⋯O=C inter-action, forms a nine-membered ring.

The molecule is essentially planar, withthe nitro group tilted by 1.78 (19)° and the iodine atom displaced by 0.0233 (2) Å with respect to the thiophene ring. In the crystal structure, adjacent mol-ecules are linked through weak I⋯O inter-actions [3.039 (2)Å], forming chains extending along the b axis.

Project description:The title compound, C(6)H(4)Br(2)S, represents a versatile building block for the preparation of π-conjugated redox-active thienyl oligomers and metal-mediated cross-coupling reactions. This is due to the presence of an electrochemically active thienyl heterocycle and a reactive dibromo-vinyl substituent, which easily undergoes dehydro-bromination in the presence of n-butyl-lithium to afford 2-ethynyl-thio-phene. In the molecule, the alkenyl unit and the thio-phene ring are almost coplanar with an angle of 3.5 (2)° between the normals of the best planes of the thio-phene ring and the vinyl moiety.
