ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of the title compound, (C(24)H(20)P)(2)[WS(4)], which was prepared under hydro-thermal conditions, contains tetra-phenyl-phospho-nium cations linked by supra-molecular inter-actions into chains running along the [110] and [10] directions. The [WS(4)](2-)anions, which lie on twofold axes, are located in the cavities created between the cation chains.

The title compound is isotypic with the corresponding Mo analogue (CH(6)N)(2)[MoS(4)], and its structure consists of a slightly distorted tetra-hedral [WS(4)](2-) dianion and two crystallographically independent methyl-ammonium (MeNH(3)) cations, all of which are located on crystallographic mirror planes. The tetra-sulfidotungstate anions are linked to the organic cations via hydrogen-bonding inter-actions.

Project description:Hexa-methyl-phospho-ramide (hmp), tetra-thio-tungstate, silver sulfide and cerium nitrate were self-assembled to form a one-dimensional anionic [Ag(4)W(4)S(16)](n) (4n-) chain in the title compound, {[Ce(NO(3))(2)(C(6)H(18)N(3)OP)(4)][AgWS(4)]}(n). The asymmetric unit contains four crystallographically independent [Ce(hmp)(4)(NO(3))(2)](+) cations, which leads to a one-dimensional polymeric anionic chain having a tetra-valent [W(4)S(16)Ag(4)] repeat unit. Each central Ce atom is coordinated by eight O atoms from two chelating nitrate and four hmp ligands, which gives rise to a distorted square-anti-prismatic structure. The polymeric chain with average W-Ag-W and Ag-W-Ag bond angles of 163.75 and 151.84°, respectively, presents a distorted linear configuration. The title complex with a non-centrosymmetric structure, is analogous to the Yb, Y, Eu, Nd, La and Dy isomorphs, which exhibit centrosymmetric structures.

The polymeric anionic chain with W?Ag?W and Ag?W?Ag angles of 165.94?(3) and 155.894?(14)° presents a distorted linear configuration. Five N atoms, 18 C atoms and their attached H atoms are disordered equally over two positions.

In each cation, both phospho-nium groups lie on the same side of the plane of the central benzene ring. The tetra-fluoro-borate anions are involved in intensive thermal motion, thus some B-F bond lengths [range 1.329 (6) to 1.391 (6) Å] deviate significantly from their standard values.
