ABSTRACT: Single crystals of monoclinic Nd(2)W(2)O(9) were obtained by growth from tungsten borate flux in an atmosphere of air. The crystal structure consists of chains of distorted [WO(6)] octa-hedra that run along the c axis of the structure, and of [NdO(9)] polyhedra that are connected via common faces and common edges to form a three-dimensional framework.

Project description:In the title coordination polymer, [Nd(2)(C(10)H(8)O(4))(3)(H(2)O)(2)](n), each of the two Nd(III) ions is nine-coordinated by eight O atoms from six different 2,2'-(m-phenyl-ene)diacetate (pda) bivalent anions and by one O atom from a water mol-ecule, forming a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic coordination geometry. Eight Nd(III) ions and 12 pda ligands form a large [Nd(8)(pda)(12)] ring, and four Nd(III) ions and six pda ligands form a small [Nd(4)(pda)(6)] ring. These rings are further connected by the coordination inter-actions of pda ligands and Nd(III), generating a three-dimensional supra-molecular framework.

Project description:The title coordination polymer, {[Nd(2)(C(4)H(2)O(4))(3)(H(2)O)(4)]·3H(2)O}, was synthesized by the reaction of neodymium(III) nitrate hexa-hydrate with fumaric acid in a water-methanol (7:3) solution. The asymmetric unit comprises two Nd(3+) cations, three fumarate dianions (L(2-)), four aqua ligands and three uncoordinated water mol-ecules. The carboxyl-ate groups of the fumarate dianions exhibit different coordination modes. In one fumarate dianion, two carboxyl-ate groups chelate two Nd(3+) cations, while one of the O atoms is coordinated to another Nd(3+) cation. Another fumarate dianion bridges three Nd(3+) cations: one of the carboxyl-ate groups chelates one Nd(3+) cation, while the other carboxyl-ate group bridges two Nd(3+) cations in a monodentate mode. The third fumarate dianion bridges four Nd(3+) cations, where one of the carboxyl-ate groups chelates one Nd(3+) cation and coordinates in a monodentate mode to a second Nd(3+), while the second carboxyl-ate groups bridges two Nd(3+) cations in a monodentate mode and one O atom is coordinated to one Nd(3+) cation. The Nd(3+) cations are in a distorted tricapped-trigonal prismatic environment and coordinated by seven O atoms from the fumarate ligands and two O atoms from water mol-ecules. The Nd(3+) cations are linked by two carboxyl-ate O atoms and two carboxyl-ate groups, generating infinite Nd-O chains to form a three-dimensional framework. There are O-H?O and C-H?O hydrogen-bonding interactions between the coordin-ated and uncoordinated water mol-ecules and carboxyl-ate O atoms.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title mixed-ligand coordination polymer, [Nd(2)(C(12)H(6)N(2)O(4))(3)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](n), the Nd(III) ion is in an octa-hedral coordination environment formed by one water mol-ecule, one chelating 2,2'-bipyridine ligand, and five monodentate carboxyl-ate groups. The local coordination polyhedron around the Nd(III) ion is a bicapped trigonal prism. Two Nd(III) centers are bridged by four carboxyl-ate groups to form an Nd(2) dimeric unit; these are further connected by 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxyl-ate linkers, resulting in a layered coordination network.

Project description:The title compound, (C(7)H(11)N(2))(3)[Nd(2)Cl(4)(H(2)O)(10)]Cl(5)·2H(2)O, consists of three 4-(dimethyl-amino)-pyridinium cations, one of which is disordered about an inversion center, one [Nd(2)Cl(4)(H(2)O)(10)](2+) dication possessing inversion symmetry, five chloride anions, one of which is disordered over two inversion centers, and two lattice water mol-ecules. The 4-(dimethyl-amino)-pyridinium cations are protonated at the pyridine N atoms and form N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds with Cl(-) counter-ions. The dimethyl-amino groups (C/N/C) lie close to the plane of the pyridinium rings, making dihedral angles of 1.6 (6)° and 6.5 (3)°. In the crystal, the [Nd(2)Cl(4)(H(2)O)(10)](2+) dications are linked via O-H⋯O and O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, forming sheets lying parallel to the bc plane. These sheets are linked via O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network. The 4-(dimethyl-amino)-pyridinium cations are located in the cavities and linked to the framework by C-H⋯Cl interactions.

Trineodymium(III) penta-iron(III) dodeca-oxide, Nd(3)Fe(5)O(12).

Project description:The title compound, Nd(3)Fe(5)O(12) (NdIG), has an iron garnet structure. One of the Fe atoms is coordinated by six O atoms in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry and has site symmetry. The other Fe atom is coordinated by four O atoms in a slightly distorted tetra-hedral geometry and has site symmetry. The FeO(6) octa-hedron and FeO(4) tetra-hedron are linked together by corners. The Nd atom is coordinated by eight O atoms in a distorted dodeca-hedral geometry and has 222 site symmetry. The O atoms occupy general positions.

Nd(III) and Gd(III) Sorption on Mesoporous Amine-Functionalized Polymer/SiO2 Composite.

Project description:The strong demand for rare-earth elements (REEs) is driven by their wide use in high-tech devices. New processes have to be developed for valorizing low-grade ores or alternative metal sources (such as wastes and spent materials). The present work contributed to the development of new sorbents for the recovery of rare earth ions from aqueous solutions. Functionalized mesoporous silica composite was synthesized by grafting diethylenetriamine onto composite support. The physical and chemical properties of the new sorbent are characterized using BET, TGA, elemental analysis, titration, FTIR, and XPS spectroscopies to identify the reactive groups (amine groups: 3.25 mmol N g-1 and 3.41 by EA and titration, respectively) and their mode of interaction with Nd(III) and Gd(III). The sorption capacity at the optimum pH (i.e., 4) reaches 0.9 mmol Nd g-1 and 1 mmol Gd g-1. Uptake kinetics are modeled by the pseudo-first-order rate equation (equilibrium time: 30-40 min). At pH close to 4-5, the sorbent shows high selectivity for rare-earth elements against alkali-earth elements. This selectivity is confirmed by the efficient recovery of REEs from acidic leachates of gibbsite ore. After elution (using 0.5 M HCl solutions), selective precipitation (using oxalate solutions), and calcination, pure rare earth oxides were obtained. The sorbent shows promising perspective due to its high and fast sorption properties for REEs, good recycling, and high selectivity.

Single-Ion Anisotropy and Intramolecular Interactions in CeIII and NdIII Dimers.

Project description:This article reports the syntheses, characterization, structural description, together with magnetic and spectroscopic properties of two isostructural molecular magnets based on the chiral ligand N,N'-bis((1,2-diphenyl-(pyridine-2-yl)methylene)-(R,R/S,S)-ethane-1,2-diamine), L1, of general formula [Ln2(RR-L1)2(Cl6)]·MeOH·1.5H2O, (Ln = Ce (1) or Nd (2)). Multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), cantilever torque magnetometry (CTM) measurements, and ab initio calculations allowed us to determine single-ion magnetic anisotropy and intramolecular magnetic interactions in both compounds, evidencing a more important role of the anisotropic exchange for the NdIII derivative. The comparison of experimental and theoretical data indicates that, in the case of largely rhombic lanthanide ions, ab initio calculations can fail in determining the orientation of the weakest components, while being reliable in determining their principal values. However, they remain of paramount importance to set the analysis of EPR and CTM on sound basis, thus obtaining a very precise picture of the magnetic interactions in these systems. Finally, the electronic structure of the two complexes, as obtained by this approach, is consistent with the absence of zero-field slow relaxation observed in ac susceptibility.

Development of Nd (III)-Based Terahertz Absorbers Revealing Temperature Dependent Near-Infrared Luminescence.

Project description:Molecular vibrations in the solid-state, detectable in the terahertz (THz) region, are the subject of research to further develop THz technologies. To observe such vibrations in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and low-frequency (LF) Raman spectroscopy, two supramolecular assemblies with the formula [NdIII (phen)3 (NCX)3] 0.3EtOH (X = S, 1-S; Se, 1-Se) were designed and prepared. Both compounds show several THz-TDS and LF-Raman peaks in the sub-THz range, with the lowest frequencies of 0.65 and 0.59 THz for 1-S and 1-Se, and 0.75 and 0.61 THz for 1-S and 1-Se, respectively. The peak redshift was observed due to the substitution of SCN- by SeCN-. Additionally, temperature-dependent TDS-THz studies showed a thermal blueshift phenomenon, as the peak position shifted to 0.68 THz for 1-S and 0.62 THz for 1-Se at 10 K. Based on ab initio calculations, sub-THz vibrations were ascribed to the swaying of the three thiocyanate/selenocyanate. Moreover, both samples exhibited near-infrared (NIR) emission from Nd (III), and very good thermometric properties in the 300-150 K range, comparable to neodymium (III) oxide-based thermometers and higher than previously reported complexes. Moreover, the temperature dependence of fluorescence and THz spectroscopy analysis showed that the reduction in anharmonic thermal vibrations leads to a significant increase in the intensity and a reduction in the width of the emission and LF absorption peaks. These studies provide the basis for developing new routes to adjust the LF vibrational absorption.

Insights into NdIII to YbIII Energy Transfer and Its Implications in Luminescence Thermometry.

Project description:This work challenges the conventional approach of using NdIII 4F3/2 lifetime changes for evaluating the experimental NdIII → YbIII energy transfer rate and efficiency. Using near-infrared (NIR) emitting Nd:Yb mixed-metal coordination polymers (CPs), synthesized via solvent-free thermal grinding, we demonstrate that the NdIII [2H11/2 → 4I15/2] → YbIII [2F7/2 → 2F5/2] pathway, previously overlooked, dominates energy transfer due to superior energy resonance and J-level selection rule compatibility. This finding upends the conventional focus on the NdIII [4F3/2 → 4I11/2] → YbIII [2F7/2 → 2F5/2] transition pathway. We characterized Nd0.890Yb0.110(BTC)(H2O)6 as a promising cryogenic NIR thermometry system and employed our novel energy transfer understanding to perform simulations, yielding theoretical thermometric parameters and sensitivities for diverse Nd:Yb ratios. Strikingly, experimental thermometric data closely matched the theoretical predictions, validating our revised model. This novel perspective on NdIII → YbIII energy transfer holds general applicability for the NdIII/YbIII pair, unveiling an important spectroscopic feature with broad implications for energy transfer-driven materials design.

Neodymium(III) molybdenum(VI) borate, NdBO(2)MoO(4).

Project description:Single crystals of NdBO(2)MoO(4) were obtained from a molybdenum oxide-boron oxide flux under an air atmosphere. The structure features double chains of edge- and face-sharing distorted [NdO(10)] bicapped square-anti-prisms, which are linked by rows of isolated [MoO(4)] tetra-hedra and by zigzag chains of corner-sharing [BO(3)] groups, all of them running along the b axis. The chains of [NdO(10)], chains of [BO(3)] and rows of [MoO(4)] groups are arranged in layers parallel to the bc plane.
