Triaqua-(3-carb-oxy-5-sulfonatobenzoato-κO)(1,10-phenanthroline-κN,N')cobalt(II) monohydrate.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [Co(C(8)H(4)O(7)S)(C(12)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)(3)]·H(2)O, the Co(II) cation is coordinated by one sulfoisophthalate dianion, one bidentate phenathroline (phen) mol-ecule and three water mol-ecules in a distorted cis-CoN(2)O(4) octa-hedral geometry. In the crystal structure, aromatic π-π stacking occurs [centroid-centroid distances 3.7630 (14) and 3.7269 (15) Å], as well as an extensive O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding network.

Project description:In the title compound, [CoCl(C(12)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)(3)]Cl·H(2)O, the Co(II) ion is coordinated by two N atoms from the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand [Co-N = 2.125 (6) and 2.146 (6) Å], one chloride ligand [Co-Cl = 2.459 (2)Å] and three water mol-ecules [Co-O = 2.070 (5)-2.105 (5)Å] in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Inter-molecular O-H⋯Cl and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds form an extensive three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network, which consolidates the crystal packing.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Co(HCO(2))(2)(C(14)H(12)N(2))(H(2)O)]·H(2)O, contains a mononuclear complex mol-ecule hydrogen bonded to a lattice water mol-ecule. The Co(II) cation is in a distorted octa-hedral coordination environment defined by the two N atoms of the 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligand and four O atoms. Two of these are from a chelating formate anion, one from a monodentate formate and the last from an aqua ligand. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming double chains along [100] with the 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands pointing outwards from each chain. These chains are further linked into layers parallel to (011) by inter-chain π-π stacking inter-actions with centroid-centroid distances of 3.61 (1) Å.

The metal atom is also chelated by the N-heterocycle. The dianion, and coordinated and uncoordinated water mol-ecules inter-act through hydrogen bonds, generating a layer motif. The crystal studied was a racemic twin with a 0.62 (2):0.38 (2) domain ratio.

The benzene ring of the 4-carb-oxy-2-sulfonato-benzoate anion is twisted with respect to the two phen ring systems at dihedral angles of 66.38 (9) and 53.56 (9)°. In each complex mol-ecule, the Cu atom is O,N,O'-chelated by the tridentate Schiff base ligand and N,N'-chelated by the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. The Cu-N bond distances in the apical directions are 2.298 (4) and 2.268 (4) Å. In the crystal, inter-molecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds together with C-H⋯π inter-actions result in a three-dimensional supra-molecular structure.
