Tris(nitrato-κO,O')bis-(1,10-phenanthroline-κN,N')holmium(III).

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [Ho(NO(3))(3)(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)], the ten-coordinate Ho(III) ion is chelated by four N atoms from two phenanthroline (phen) ligands and six O atoms from three bidentate nitrate groups. The environment around the Ho atom can be described as a distorted bicapped square anti-prism. Two phenanthroline ligands form a dihedral angle of 43.72 (13)°. Short inter-molecular distances between the centroids of the six-membered rings [3.6887 (14)-3.8374 (16) Å] indicate the existence of π-π inter-actions, which link the mol-ecules into stacks extended in the [10] direction. The crystal packing is further stabilized by weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

The Sm atom is in a pseudo-bicapped square-anti-prismatic geometry, formed by four N atoms from two chelating 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands and by six O atoms, four from two 2,6-dihy-droxy-benzoate (DHB) ligands and the other two from a nitrate anion. π-π stacking inter-actions between phen and DHB ligands [centroid-centroid distance = 3.528 (4) and 3.812 (3) Å], and phen and phen ligands [face-to-face separation = 3.420 (10) Å] of adjacent complexes stabilize the crystal structure. Intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds are observed in the DHB ligands.

Project description:The title complex salt, [CuCl(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)][Tb(NO(3))(4)(C(12)H(8)N(2))], consists of discrete [CuCl(phen))(2)](+) cations and [Tb(NO(3))(4)(phen)](-) anions (phen is 1,10-phenanthroline). The [CuCl(phen))(2)](+) cation contains a five-coordinate Cu(2+) ion, ligated by two bidentate phen ligands and one Cl(-) ion, exhibiting a distorted CuN(4)Cl trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. In the [Tb(NO(3))(4)(phen)](-) anion, the Tb(3+) ion is coordinated by one chelating phen ligand and four chelating nitrates, forming a distorted TbN(2)O(8) bicapped dodeca-hedral configuration. The anions and cations are assembled into a three-dimensional network by weak C-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. There is also a significant π-π stacking inter-action, with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.635 (2) Å.

Project description:The reaction of cadmium nitrate and sodium nitrite in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline yields the mixed nitrate-nitrite title complex, [Cd(NO(2))(1.75)(NO(3))(0.25)(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)]. The metal ion is bis-chelated by two N-heterocycles as well as by the nitrate/nitrite ions in a distorted dodeca-hedral CdN(4)O(4) coordination environment. One nitrite group is ordered; the other is disordered with respect to a nitrate group (ratio 0.75:0.25) concerning the O atom that is not involved in bonding to the metal ion.
