Sodium 2-nitro-cinnamate dihydrate: a one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded coordination polymer.

ABSTRACT: The title compound catena-poly[aqua-sodium-μ(2)-aqua-μ(3)-2-nitro-cinnamato], [Na(C(9)H(6)NO(4))(H(2)O)(2)](n), the sodium salt of trans-2-nitro-cinnamic acid, is a one-dimensional coordination polymer based on six-coordinate octa-hedral NaO(6) centres, comprising three facially related monodentate carboxyl-ate O-atom donors from separate ligands (all bridging) [Na-O = 2.4370 (13)-2.5046 (13) Å], and three water mol-ecules (two bridging and one monodentate) [Na-O = 2.3782 (13)-2.4404 (17) Å]. The structure is also stabilized by intra-chain water-carboxyl-ate and water-nitro O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Project description:The reaction of hydroxyl-amine hydro-chloride with isatin in ethanol, catalysed with HCl and neutralized with Na(2)CO(3), yielded the one-dimensional coordination polymer, catena-poly[[[aqua-sodium]-di-μ-aqua-[aqua-sodium]-bis-(μ-2-oxoindoline-2,3-dione 3-oximato)] tetra-kis-(oxoindoline-2,3-dione 3-oxime)], {[Na(C(8)H(5)N(2)O(2))(H(2)O)(2)]·2C(8)H(6)N(2)O(2)}(n). The Na(I) atom has a six-coordinate distorted-octa-hedral environment. Isatine-3-oximate O atoms and water mol-ecules bridge adjacent Na atoms, forming a one-dimensional polymeric structure parallel to [100]. Each isatine-3-oxime dimerizes through N-H⋯O interactions and in addition each oxime is linked to a coordination polymer. Thus, coordination polymers are linked by O-H⋯O and O-H⋯N interactions from isatine-3-oxime dimers, building a two-dimensional network parallel to [110].

One-dimensional ladder gallium coordination polymer.

Project description:A one-dimensional ladder-type coordination polymer, poly[[(μ2-hydroxido)(μ2-1H-pyrazole-3,5-di-carboxyl-ato)gallium(III)] monohydrate], [Ga(C5H2N2O4)(OH)(H2O)] n or [Ga(HPDC)(OH)(H2O)] n , I, isotypic with a V3+ coordination polymer previously reported by Chen et al. [J. Coord. Chem. (2008). 61, 3556-3567] was prepared from Ga3+ and pyrazole-3,5-di-carb-oxy-lic acid monohydrate (H3PDC·H2O). Compound I was isolated using three distinct experimental methods: hydro-thermal (HT), microwave-assisted (MWAS) and one-pot (OP) and the crystallite size should be fine-tuned according to the method employed. The coordination polymeric structure is based on a dimeric Ga3+ moiety comprising two μ2-bridging hydroxide groups, which are inter-connected by HPDC2- anionic organic linkers. The close packing of individual polymers is strongly directed by the supra-molecular inter-actions, namely several O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions.

Proton-electron coupling and mixed conductivity in a hydrogen-bonded coordination polymer.

Project description:The fundamental understanding of coupled proton-electron transport in mixed protonic-electronic conductors (MPECs) remains unexplored in materials science, despite its potential significance within the broader context of mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIECs) and the possibility of controlled diffusion of protons using hydrogen-bond networks. To address these limitations, we present a hydrogen-bonded coordination polymer Ni-BAND ({[Ni(bpy)(H2O)2(DMF)2](NO3)2·2DMF}n), which demonstrates high mixed protonic-electronic conductivity at room temperature. Through detailed analysis, we unravel the coupled transport mechanism, offering insights for the rational design of high-performance MPECs. We demonstrate the practical implications of this mechanism by examining the humidity-dependent synaptic plasticity of Ni-BAND, showcasing how MPECs can expand into traditional MIEC applications while leveraging their unique proton-mediated advantages.

One Dimensional Coordination Polymer of Zn(II) for Developing Multifunctional Nanoparticles.

Project description:A variety of nanoparticles (NPs) including Ag, Au, Pd, Cr and mixed Cu/Fe have been synthesized in a non-activated (without solvent removal) one dimensional coordination polymer (CP) of Zn(II) via two different mechanisms, acid formation and redox activity of the framework. Main driving force to grow these NPs within the cavities of CP is the presence of free oxygens of one of the monodentate carboxylate groups of BDC ligand. These free oxygens act as anchoring sites for the metal ions of the metal precursors. Chemical and physical characteristics of the NPs within the framework have been evaluated by the high resolution transmission electron microscopic (HRTEM) images. Excluding Ag(0) and Pd(0) other NPs are present as combinations of their elemental as well as oxide forms (Au/Au2O3, Cr/Cr2O3/CrO2 and Cu/Cu2O, Fe/FeO). Synthesized Ag NPs within the framework show remarkable antibacterial efficacy at extremely low concentrations. Ag, Au and Cu/Fe NPs show ferromagnetic properties within the framework at room temperature. This polymer has potential to sequester highly toxic Cr(VI) to non toxic Cr(0), Cr(III) and Cr(IV) species.

A new one-dimensional Ni<sup>II</sup> coordination polymer with a two-dimensional supra-molecular architecture.

Project description:A new one-dimensional NiII coordination polymer of 1,3,5-tris-(imidazol-1-ylmeth-yl)benzene, namely catena-poly[[aqua-(sulfato-κO)hemi(μ-ethane-1,2-diol-κ2O:O')[μ3-1,3,5-tris-(1H-imidazol-1-ylmeth-yl)benzene-κ3N3,N3',N3'']nickel(II)] ethane-1,2-diol monosolvate monohydrate], {[Ni(SO4)(C18H18N6)(C2H6O2)0.5(H2O)]·C2H6O2·H2O} n , was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The NiII cation is coordinated by three N atoms of three different 1,3,5-tris-(imidazol-1-ylmeth-yl)benzene ligands, one O atom of an ethane-1,2-diol mol-ecule, by a sulfate anion and a water mol-ecule, forming a distorted octa-hedral NiN3O3 coordination geometry. The tripodal 1,3,5-tris-(imidazol-1-ylmeth-yl)benzene ligands link the NiII cations, generating metal-organic chains running along the [100] direction. Adjacent chains are further connected by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, resulting in a two-dimensional supermolecular architecture running parallel to the (001) plane. Another water mol-ecule and a second ethane-1,2-diol mol-ecule are non-coordinating and are linked to the coordinating sulfate ions via O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Copper(II) 2,2-Bis(Hydroxymethyl)Propionate Coordination Compounds with Hexamethylenetetramine: From Mononuclear Complex to One-Dimensional Coordination Polymer.

Project description:Three new copper coordination compounds derived from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (dmpa) and hexamethylenetetramine (hmta) were obtained and their crystal structures were determined. The stoichiometry of the reagents applied in the syntheses reflects the metal to ligand molar ratio in the formed solid products. Due to the multiple coordination modes of the used ligands, wide structural diversity was achieved among synthesized compounds, i.e., mononuclear [Cu(dmp)2(hmta)2(H2O)] (1), dinuclear [Cu2(dmp)4(hmta)2] (2), and 1D coordination polymer [Cu2(dmp)4(hmta)]n (3). Their supramolecular structures are governed by O-H•••O and O-H•••N hydrogen bonds. The compounds were characterized in terms of absorption (UV-Vis and IR) and thermal properties. The relationships between structural features and properties were discussed in detail. Owing to discrepancies in the coordination mode of a dmp ligand, bidentate chelating in 1, and bidentate bridging in 2 and 3, there is a noticeable change in the position of the bands corresponding to the stretching vibrations of the carboxylate group in the IR spectra. The differences in the structures of the compounds are also reflected in the nature and position of the UV-Vis absorption maxima, which are located at lower wavelengths for 1.

Coordination diversity in hydrogen-bonded homoleptic fluoride-alcohol complexes modulates reactivity.

Project description:The nucleophilic reactivity of fluoride ion is altered in the presence of hydrogen-bond donors, including alcohols. Relatively little is known about the coordination involved; to rectify this, the X-ray structures of fourteen novel fluoride-alcohol complexes with tetrabutylammonium as the counterion have been determined. The coordination number varies from two to four depending on the steric bulk of the alcohol and is closely linked to trends in reactivity. This diversity in coordination stoichiometry is unprecedented but significant, as it implies differences in the ability of the fluoride-alcohol complexes to dissociate in solution with release of a more active and/or selective fluoride source.

Negative area compressibility of a hydrogen-bonded two-dimensional material.

Project description:Very few materials expand two-dimensionally under pressure, and this extremely rare phenomenon, namely negative area compressibility (NAC), is highly desirable for technological applications in pressure sensors and actuators. Hitherto, the few known NAC materials have dominantly been limited to 2D crystals bonded via coordination interactions while other 2D systems have not been explored yet. Here, we report the large NAC of a hydrogen-bonded 2D supramolecular coordination complex, Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O, with a synergistic microscopic mechanism. Our findings reveal that such an unusual phenomenon, over a wide pressure range of 0.15-4.44 GPa without the occurrence of any phase transitions, arises from the complex cooperation of intra-layer coordination and hydrogen-bonding interactions, and inter-layer van der Waals forces. In addition, we propose that these NAC crystals could have important applications as pressure-converting materials in ultrasensitive pressure sensing devices.

Crystal structure of a one-dimensional coordination polymer of tin(IV) bromide with 1,4-di-thiane.

Project description:The title compound, [SnBr4(C4H8S2)] {systematic name: catena-poly[[tetrabromidotin(IV)]-μ-1,4-dithiane-κ(2) S:S']}, represents the first 1,4-di-thiane complex with tin as coordination centre. The asymmetric unit consist of half a formula unit with the tin(IV) atom at the centre of symmetry at 0,0,1/2 (Wyckoff symbol b) and a centrosymmetric 1,4-di-thiane mol-ecule with the centre of symmetry in 1/2,0,1 (Wyckoff symbol c). The tin(IV) atom is coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral manner by the four bromine atoms and two sulfur atoms of two 1,4-di-thiane mol-ecules in a trans-position. Sn-Br [mean value: 2.561 (5) Å] and Sn-S distances [2.6546 (6) Å] are in the typical range for octa-hedrally coordinated tin(IV) atoms and the di-thiane mol-ecule adopts a chair conformation. The one-dimensional polymeric chains propagate along the [101] direction with weak inter-molecular Br⋯Br [3.5724 (4) Å] between parallel chains and weak Br⋯H inter-actions [2.944-2.993 Å] within the chains.

One-dimensional core-shell motif nanowires with chemically-bonded transition metal sulfide-carbon heterostructures for efficient sodium-ion storage.

Project description:Herein, a chemical-vapor deposition-like strategy was developed for the synthesis of versatile core-shell transition metal sulfide (TMS)@carbon nanowires with chemically-bonded heterostructures and significantly improved electrochemical performance. The morphological evolution observations revealed the simultaneous growth of TMS nanowires and their bonding with an ultrathin carbon layer. The resulting core-shell heterostructured nanowires possessed notable advantages, including fast ion/electron diffusion rates, improved conductivity, and chemical/mechanical stability, thereby leading to remarkable reversible capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability for Na-ion storage applications. The in situ transmission electron microscopy and in situ X-ray diffraction studies for FeS@C demonstrated the crystalline phase evolution between hexagonal and tetragonal FeS species during the electrochemical charging/discharging process, clearly indicating the excellent Na-ion storage performance of FeS@C nanowires. This work provides a new methodology for achieving 1D core-shell nanoarchitectures, while elucidating the electrochemical reaction mechanism underlying Na-ion storage in TMS materials.
