Fluid dynamical niches of phytoplankton types.

ABSTRACT: The biogeochemical role of phytoplanktonic organisms strongly varies from one plankton type to another, and their relative abundance and distribution have fundamental consequences at the global and climatological scales. In situ observations find dominant types often associated to specific physical and chemical water properties. However, the mechanisms and spatiotemporal scales by which marine ecosystems are organized are largely not known. Here we investigate the spatiotemporal organization of phytoplankton communities by combining multisatellite data, notably high-resolution ocean-color maps of dominant types and altimetry-derived Lagrangian diagnostics of the surface transport. We find that the phytoplanktonic landscape is organized in (sub-)mesoscale patches (10-100 km) of dominant types separated by physical fronts induced by horizontal stirring. These physical fronts delimit niches supported by water masses of similar history and whose lifetimes are comparable with the timescale of the bloom onset (few weeks). The resonance between biological activity and physical processes suggest that the spatiotemporal (sub-)mesoscales associated to stirring are determinant in the observation and modeling of marine ecosystems.

Project description:Large rivers represent a significant component of inland waters and are considered sentinels and integrators of terrestrial and atmospheric processes. They represent hotspots for the transport and processing of organic and inorganic material from the surrounding landscape, which ultimately impacts the bio-optical properties and food webs of the rivers. In large rivers, hydraulic connectivity operates as a major forcing variable to structure the functioning of the riverscape, and--despite increasing interest in large-river studies--riverscape structural properties, such as the underwater spectral regime, and their impact on autotrophic ecological processes remain poorly studied. Here we used the St. Lawrence River to identify the mechanisms structuring the underwater spectral environment and their consequences on pico- and nanophytoplankton communities, which are good biological tracers of environmental changes. Our results, obtained from a 450 km sampling transect, demonstrate that tributaries exert a profound impact on the receiving river's photosynthetic potential. This occurs mainly through injection of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and non-algal material (tripton). CDOM and tripton in the water column selectively absorbed wavelengths in a gradient from blue to red, and the resulting underwater light climate was in turn a strong driver of the phytoplankton community structure (prokaryote/eukaryote relative and absolute abundances) at scales of many kilometers from the tributary confluence. Our results conclusively demonstrate the proximal impact of watershed properties on underwater spectral composition in a highly dynamic river environment characterized by unique structuring properties such as high directional connectivity, numerous sources and forms of carbon, and a rapidly varying hydrodynamic regime. We surmise that the underwater spectral composition represents a key integrating and structural property of large, heterogeneous river ecosystems and a promising tool to study autotrophic functional properties. It confirms the usefulness of using the riverscape approach to study large-river ecosystems and initiate comparison along latitudinal gradients.

Project description:Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics play an important role in maintaining a stable central nervous system environment and are influenced by different physiological processes. Multiple studies have investigated these processes but the impact of each of them on CSF flow is not well understood. A deeper insight into the CSF dynamics and the processes impacting them is crucial to better understand neurological disorders such as hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, and intracranial hypertension. This study presents a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model which incorporates physiological processes as boundary conditions. CSF production and pulsatile arterial and venous volume changes are implemented as inlet boundary conditions. At the outlets, 2-element windkessel models are imposed to simulate CSF compliance and absorption. The total compliance is first tuned using a 0D model to obtain physiological pressure pulsations. Then, simulation results are compared with in vivo flow measurements in the spinal subarachnoid space (SAS) and cerebral aqueduct, and intracranial pressure values reported in the literature. Finally, the impact of the distribution of and total compliance on CSF pressures and velocities is evaluated. Without respiration effects, compliance of 0.17 ml/mmHg yielded pressure pulsations with an amplitude of 5 mmHg and an average value within the physiological range of 7–15 mmHg. Also, model flow rates were found to be in good agreement with reported values. However, when adding respiration effects, similar pressure amplitudes required an increase of compliance value to 0.51 ml/mmHg, which is within the range of 0.4–1.2 ml/mmHg measured in vivo. Moreover, altering the distribution of compliance over the four different outlets impacted the local flow, including the flow through the foramen magnum. The contribution of compliance to each outlet was directly proportional to the outflow at that outlet. Meanwhile, the value of total compliance impacted intracranial pressure. In conclusion, a computational model of the CSF has been developed that can simulate CSF pressures and velocities by incorporating boundary conditions based on physiological processes. By tuning these boundary conditions, we were able to obtain CSF pressures and flows within the physiological range.
